2023 Fantasy Football: Week 2 Film Review, Notes

Packers @ Falcons

Bijan is going to be awesome to have on your Fantasy Squads, Top 5 pick next year.

Allegier role prob dwindles as season goes on, but still maintains Flex Value, will see what Cordy P does when he comes back, get ready to pounce if there is an injury.

Drake London was owning Jaire using his big body to box him out. Ridder threw a couple nice balls to him. They used him on their first passing play of the game on a screen and another screen later. London needs to be fed every week, too good to pass up. Should pay off that ADP.

Ridder was picked once but could have two more which were dropped. One by Jaire. He’s still erratic, needs to continue to make strides this year.  Pass Pro still isn’t great, much better run blocking team

Falcons played a decent amount of 12 personnel, with Jonnu Smith getting work and targets. Kyle Pitts needs to work on his route running. Same time they need to give him more shots so he can use his physicality and go up and get balls.

Jordan Love’s protection was solid for the most part. He made some nice throws once again, but still missed some and AJ Terrell dropped an interception, jumping a curl route. Jayden Reed schemed well for two TD’s. One on a jet sweep pass.

Dontayvion Wicks another rookie from Virginia, looks like he can be a factor this year, caught a TD. Will be tough when Watson returns. Not much from Musgrave in this game, likely a lot of inconsistencies in his rookie year.

Packers need Aaron Jones, Dillon is a grinder and moves piles, but lacks giving you any sort of explosive plays. Very underwhelming in Fantasy and in Real life.

Bengals @ Ravens

Joe Burrow looked fine to me. One bad pick in the end zone to Higgins, but much improved from last week. Calf is still bothering him a bit, but this offense be fine. Chase will pickup, but Tee Higgins could cut into his production more than ever this year. More Tee in the slot and that’s nice. Irv Smith getting some shots, but not going to be consistent enough with Higgins, Chase, Boyd, the run game and all the check downs Burrow does. Will def have some splash games though, just tough to predict.

Mixon ran strong, didn’t get a chance on the GL, but he should have some nice games. The Bengals backups all look piss poor at this point, Mixon going to continue to get all the looks, just lacks true explosion but can still move piles and catch balls out the backfield.

Beckham had 3 catches early then disappeared, looked like he got hurt, came back, then left again. Nelson Agholor stepped in and caught a TD. Batemen wasn’t doing a lot once again, looks like he’s going to be overshadowed all year. Zay Flowers continues to be a big piece in this offense, caught a nice deep ball, then they used him on a jet sweep and screen to try to get him in the end zone.

Lamar and offense looked much more comfortable in Week 2 in the Monken offense. Helps to have his #1 target in Mark Andrews out there, who almost caught two TD’s, finished with one.

Gus Bus grinded out yards, got a lot of 1st downs and finished off a TD after Justice Hill was stuffed. Gus is the better back, but Hill gives them the versatility in the passing and screen game. Both backs will be mostly underwhelming all season, but decent flex plays. Gus will have the most TD’s. Maybe Keaton Mitchell starts to get some work soon. Could be better than Hill. Don’t think Gordon will unseat Gus.

Chiefs @ Jags

Trevor Lawrence could have had multiple TD’s, four passes were caught just out of bounds in the back of the end zone. Two to Zay Jones, one to Ridley and another but I forget who it was. I watched this tape last night.

Chiefs D is tough, good Run D, pass rush and coverage. Chiefs turned it over 3x but continued to stop the Jags and hold them to FG’s. Again there 4 close plays that could have been TD’s in the back of the end zone, good throws by Lawrence just were out of bounds.

Kirk bounce back, Ridley looked a little winded in this game maybe still getting back into true football shape, but did make an excellent catch. Engram is such an important weapon for this team, he’s going to have another nice year. Bad game for Etienne, Bigbsy non existent could lose role to D’Ernest Johnson possibly.

Travis Kelce def isn’t 100% yet, but he should be soon. Wasn’t moving like his usual self but still caught a TD in this game. Noah Gray was playing more than usual also. Sky Moore caught the other, it’s possible he could Mahomes’ next level Kelce, as he is also good at moving to open spots to get open. Kadarius Toney started out hot with some nice moves on a quick screens but didn’t do much the rest of the game and almost lost a fumble on another screen. Will see if they start using him downfield more again, but they likely wanted to get him some easy passes to get his confidence, rhythm back. Will have some nice games ,but this passing corps is crowded. Rashee Rice still being used in limited role, same with Justin Watson and Justyn Ross. I still think Ross could earn more as the season goes on. Watson makes some big plays, but also had a fumble. Again this room is crowded with guys. I would say short term its Moore and Toney then longterm it’s Rice followed by Possibly Justyn Ross.

CEH continued to work in with McKinnon and Pacheco and it’s hurting the entire backfield from a fantasy standpoint. Pacheco broke some nice runs, but he’s not catching passes and McKinnon isn’t being used enough yet to use in your lineups. Frustrating to use any of these guys until CEH is out of the picture.

Chargers @ Titans

I bashed Ryan Tannehill last week as he was awful against a tough Saints D last week, but he played great in this one. Two beautiful deep balls to Burks and Chris Moore and also ran for a TD. Nick Westbrook-Ihkine has a big role in this offense and caught a TD. Henry is running well despite a subpar Line. Yards likely to come down this year but still can finish with 12+ Td’s and have a career year in receptions. Tyjae Spears made some nice plays but doesn’t have flex value right now. Chig is a good player and is running a ton of routes, but it’s just crowded right now. Tough to use going to be very inconsistent.

Justin Herbert played well, quick throws, decisive,  threw dime to Allen deep down the sideline, another Dime to Palmer in the back of the end zone which was called back, but then the next play hit Keenan Allen on a Nice throw after getting away from pressure. His biggest issue right now is finishing games as the Chargers lose yet another close game. They are truly the king franchise of losing close ones. Gerald Everett caught two balls and broke 97 tackles, but like Chig it’s just crowded. Like last year Josh Palmer is running a ton of routes just not getting a lot of targets. He’s playing way ahead of Quentin Johnston right now, maybe that changes at some point but neither guy is usable right now. Johnston was targeted once in the end zone, tried to make a one handed catch as his other arm was being held down by the defender, no PI call.

Josh Kelley may be a little better runner than I gave him credit for, but he did nothing in this game in a tough matchup. As of now he’s startable, but questionable when Ekeler returns. Preseason favorite Elijah Dotson ran 4 times for six yards running into a similar wall like Kelley.

Colts @ Texans

Anthony Richardson had two rushing TD’s early, before exiting in the 2nd quarter from concussion symptoms. His mechanics, arm look good and he’s only going to get better. Would have had a huge game against this Texans D that was banged up in the secondary. Zach Moss had a productive day even though he didn’t look great, but still a huge improvement from Deon Jackson who was awful last week. Moss will also benefit from Richardson’s presence. Slow day for the Colts WR’s, Minshew was mostly checking down and they were running a lot. Pittman still in for a nice season, Josh Downs should emerge as the season goes on. Kyler Granson caught the TD at TE he’s relevant while Jelani Woods continues to be out. Minshew still a capable backup but he’s no threat to Richardson.

The Texans were down big and early so they had to throw a ton. C.J. Stroud looked decisive accurate and Nico Collins had a huge day. Nico is big body and going to have a very nice season playing with Stroud. Noah Brown hit the IR and Tank Dell stepped in nicely. He caught one TD on a quick curl that he broke off for a TD and had another TD that was called back because of a penalty. He’s the #2 I want in this offense behind Collins. The Texans will likely be playing from behind most games and will be pass heavy. They should be pass heavy anyway with their lack of running game. Damien Pierce lacks true explosion, but there was no real holes to run through. He was stuffed on the goal line twice. Devin Singletary is a non factor. Not sure why the Texans started Dare Obgunwale over Mike Boone in this game, Boone might be the back with the most juice on this team. He was a healthy scratch. They could have used him in this game. Dalton Schultz is being buried behind Nico and Dell right now, he may have some good games, but that feature role he had in Dallas is gone. Texans Oline is still banged up so room for improvement in the run game and pass game. Stroud was being pressured most of the game, but again he handled it very well. Stroud looks the part. John Metchie caught one ball late in garbage time as he was coming back from the hamstring injury, keep a very close eye on him as he likely will be a factor in this offense sooner than later. I would say Woods would eventually be the odd man out, Metchie could push Dell as the #2 but right now Dell has the edge.

Seattle @ Detroit

Geno Smith should have removed all doubts about him as a QB last year, but some people were questioning again after Week one. He puts that to rest in Week 2 with a. Great performance against the Lions getting the W in OT. Gino can play under pressure and deliver balls on the money. Kenneth Walker gets two TD’s not a lot of room in the run game, but he’s got a firm grip on this job despite Zach Charbonnet who is still being used sparingly. Charbs prob will get more work as the season goes on, but right now can not be started. Noah Fant is starting to get some looks, but Colby Parkinson and Will Dissly are still being utilized. Can’t trust any Seattle TE right now. Tyler Lockett get’s two TD’s in this one playing solid once again and even though DK Metcalf was scoreless, he was tackled at the one on one catch and was going to catch another before he was abused in the end zone which ended up being a PI.

Jared Goff played well other than his pick six which he threw right after being sacked for the first time all game. Jared Goff will fold under pressure, he’s very fortunate to be playing behind this Lions offensive line.  He had forever to throw on some pass plays. With protection Goff is very effective makes good decisions and throws the ball accurately, he just doesn’t have much of a deep ball, everything is short to intermediate. Another good game for Josh Reynolds and this should keep up with Jameson Williams out, just know Reynolds has had splash games in the past and he likely will disappoint again, but maybe he’s in for a career year. Amon St Brown another solid game, I still feel like his production will fall of a cliff at some point. We saw Reynolds step up, Kalif Raymond caught a deep TD, something St Brown never does because he has no long speed and Sam LaPorta looked very good once again. One catch broke a tackle and gained extra yards. Goff is going to start using him more and more which will take away from St. Brown, plus you have Williams coming back in Week 6. St. Brown is a sell high, I rather have Garrett Wilson, especially in keeper and Dynasty. CD Lamb, etc. Brown is good for what he does but he’s never going to be a truly explosive player and his play is replaceable.

David Montgomery was balling before he got hurt. He was running hard, looked explosive it does help running behind that Detroit Line, but he suffered for years running behind an awful line in Chicago. He’s also a good catching back, something Jamaal Williams didn’t provide. Montgomery had a screen TD pass called back and would have had a bigger day. He could be out a few weeks. Jahymr Gibbs had a few nice runs and catches, but honestly Montgomery looked better. Goff did miss Gibbs open twice, which would have went for big gains, plus the Freakin Lions are using Craig Reynolds alongside Swift once Gibbs went down. Do the Lions have trust issues in their RB’s? Why would you trade Swift and take Gibbe 9 overall just to use freaking Craig Reynolds? If Montgomery is out for a while, Gibbs steps into a great role however and will be very nice. Gibbs needs to take advantage of this opportunity and the Lions need to ease up with Craig Reynolds, this is similar to last year when they were using Justin Jackson over Swift. I think the Lions are a fraudulent team, if that Line sustains some injuries or if when they face a formidable defense that can bring pressure on Goff, they will fold like an expensive tent, nice and easy. Cheap tents don’t fold too well, they are usually a pain in the ass to use. Actually most tents are pain in the ass. I will continue to fade the Lions.

Commanders @ Broncos

2nd game in a row, Russ had good 1st half then falters in the 2nd. Broncos were rolling hitting multiple deep balls to Marvin Mims, dimes by Russ, then in the 2nd half they took their foot of the pedal lost their energy and allowed the Commanders to come back. Commanders pass rush also stepped up, the return of Chase Young helps, the line is tough. Javonte Williams lacks burst, he didn’t have much before the injury but would break a ton of tackles. Right now he looks like Damion Pierce, run blocking isn’t great but Javonte isn’t looking great. This could continue to improve, but we may have to wait til next year to get Full Javonte. I was never overly high on on him in the first place. Perine didn’t get much work, he should get more next week after looking good in Week 1 they sort of went away from him, Jaleel Mcglaughin had the only rushing TD.

Jerry Juedy didn’t look all the way back in first game back from his hammy injury, he should have some bigger games, but Russ seems to be spreading it around to Sutton, Mims, and even Brandon Johnson who caught an early TD before catching that Miracle TD at the end of the game. Trautman isn’t good, leave him on wires. Dulcich is a guy to keep an eye on, he’s worth an IR spot if you need a TE. Russ needs to play consistent for 4 quarters.

Sam Howell made some mistakes and could have a few turnovers but also made a few nice throws, notably the sidelines pass at the end of the half to TE John Bates and the TD pass to Terry McClaurin. Beautiful throws. Logan Thomas caught a TD but knocked out with a concussion, Bates and Cole Turner aren’t worth grabbing yet. Jahan Dotson two poor games so far, it should improve, but he needs to show more after receiving a ton of hype. Not sure Howell can sustain both Dotson and McClaurin consistently with how much they like to run and throw to their RB’s. Brian Robinson is the guy in this backfield and that will remain, he wore out the Denver defense int he 2nd half for two TD’s. He’s a good RB and is getting work int he pass game. Antonio Gibson played well here but isn’t getting enough touches right now to be usable. He will need a Robinson injury or a lot more use in the pass game, will be tough to predict. Commanders are a well coached offense with Bienemy, some well timed screens and he makes it easy for Howell overall. Bienemy deserves a coaching job next year.

Giants @ Cardinals

Cards D played solid in 1st half as Did Dobbs, Michael Wilson ran some nice routes, but his QB is Josh Dobbs so he’s going to be limited in what he can do. Zach Ertz still has a little juice but he needs to move out the way for Trey Mcbride. Marquise Brown may have a decent year, but again there QB play is crap. James Connor still is a beast, but he’s likely going to get traded with Ertz at the deadline, so Keontay Ingram may take over.

Danny Dimes and this entire Giants offense struggled mightily but he came out in the 2nd half and balled out. First pass bomb to Hyatt deep and then another deep pass later to Hyatt where he high pointed the ball. Slayton also almost caught a TD deep. Parris Campbell looks likes non existent through two games, Hodgins caught a TD. I would bank on Hyatt growing more and more as the season goes on. Sequin meaningless injury late, played a great game, looked awesome, beautiful route on the TD catch.  Brightwell, Brieda, Gray eh.

49ers @ Rams

Puka show once again, just force fed quick targets and he’s open. Tutu also looks solid running nice routes to get open. Kyren is decent, but the Cam Akers ish is so weird. Karen also dropped a pass that led to a Pick. Van Jefferson was running a lot of clear out routes, I might hold for one more week before dropping, I still think he can have some big games here. Tyler Higbee looks slow and now with all these other targets he’s an afterthought. He’s just not a very good player.

The 2021 Deebo may be back. He looks healthy and like he did two years ago. Aiyuk a bit banged up in this game, Purdy missed him and deebo on a couple deep balls. JuJuan Johnson made a couple nice grabs, talented player just buried on the depth chart.

CMC is just awesome, Kittle is obviously a good player but will remain inconsistent because he blocks so much and there are many other weapons to feed.
