FantasySavvy 2023:Week 1 Film Review

Panthers @ Falcons

Brian Burns Monster, was disrupting almost every pass play. Blew up the Falcons pass game, Made much more sense for Falcons to be run heavy, their Line is designed to run block And they are very good at it.

Drake London 1 target 1 drop. Bijan and Allegier nice combo, great run blocking poor pass blocking.

Bryce had some nice throws decent protection, threw INT on same play twice on attempted Dig to Terrance Marshall. Terrance Marshall, Mingo not great, two raw unrefined players. Jessie Bates both INT’s.

Miles Sanders ran decent, was main receiving back, Chubba Hubbard filled in, ran well.

Texans @ Panthers

Texan D played well, Generated a lot of pressure. Will McDonald Beast. CJ Stroud Ok, not great weapons. Nico looks to be #1, see what Metchie can do. Pierce eh, Singletary and also Mike Boone mixed in. Mike Boone may earn more playing time, might be their best overall RB.

Lamar was getting pressured constantly, Zay Flowers electric. Likely barely targeted. Zay was getting a ton of screens and jet sweeps inside redzone. Monken offense didn’t look that great. Bateman made a nice catch, no real deep shots for Lamar, again a ton of pressure by Houston. Justice Hill used on GL, two TD’s, but terrible YPC. Gus scored on two point conversion. Prob be a mix of The two. Maybe Keaton Mitchell or MelGO gets more work going forward, might be Mitchell. I think I rather own Hill based on his potential receiving work and the fact they used him most on the GL.

Bengals @ Browns

Stefanski outcoached Taylor. Sloppy wet game. Browns generated a ton of pressure threw all of Burrow’s timing off and covered his RB’s in the flats, which Burrow likes to utilize. Browns were locked onto Bengals WR’s.

Burrow might have had the worst game of his career, Calf may have been bothering him a bit also, wet ball, and his balls were more inaccurate than usual. Pressure was big factor obviously.

Joe Mixon a couple of nice runs, but then stuffed for the rest of the game. Traveyon Williams and Chris Evans mixed in both irrelevant. Bengals couldn’t do jack shit on offense between the weather and the Browns pressure and coverage.

Watson played well, some dirt balls either from the rain or maybe just mechanics or bit of both. But he ran well and made some nice throws. Chubb was his usual self, Ford mixed behind him, didn’t see any other back on the field. Ford is a direct handcuff to Chubb, doesn’t provide flex value. Elijah Moore utilized on jet sweeps, had one really nice play where play was blown up and ran the other way for nice gain. Also was being used downfield in passing game. He looks to be the #2 WR right now although that could change. Browns took deep shots to Marquise Goodwin. They will connect on a few of those this year. Cooper decent day, but will have better days. People’s Jones will battle with Moore for #2 spot, but would bank on Moore.

Packers @ Bears

Fields played Ok, one really bad throw, gameplay was mostly screens and runs. Their Online still can’t protect, huge issue. Most other QB’s would have folded. DJ Moore getting covered by Jaire, throw it out the window. Bears need to get more vertical with passing game. Roschon Johnson looked great, he probably is going to get more early work very soon.

Bears D still stinks, Love well protected. Doubs showed great hands on both TD catches. Love played good enough, still missed some throws but overall solid. Jayden Reed showed out a bit, but Watson coming back soon. Aaron Jones looked great not sure how long he’s out.

Jags @ Colts

Up n Down debut for Richardson but overall solid. Strong arm, quick release, some nice throws. Also missed a lot of throws and had one bad pick. Showed his speed, strength and athleticism on multiple runs. A lot of room to grow. Should utilize Josh Downs more who looked good. Don’t see much from Alec Pierce. Deon Jackson rough day, stuffed multiple times on short yardage, two fumbles, dropped pass. Zack Moss should take over #1 duties as early as next week. Colts will be desperate to get Taylor back out there. Hull hurt, Jake funk filled in.

Colts D line played solid, Buckner was a force. D played well enough for them to win game, Richardson just couldn’t put together enough consistent drives. Lawrence looked very good, great debut for Ridley. Tank took GL work From Etienne, but Etienne main guy and don’t think it’s going to hurt his fantasy value overall, Etinee can break big plays and produce enough even losing GL Carries. Tank did drop a pass that led to a Pick 6.

Bucs @ Vikings

Bucs still got a D and Baker was good enough to make some big throws and runs. Nice TD throw to Evans, nice Throw to Godwin to extend a drive a win the game. Rachaad White looks like Leveon when he went to the Jets but maybe worse. Huge Volume, just didn’t look good. Sean Tucker filled in some but didn’t show enough yet. Maybe he gets more work alongside Chase Edmunds.

Vikings offense just too inconsistent, Some missed throws by Kirk, Bucs D was the difference in this one, still a very solid defense.

Titans @ Saints

Titans Run D is tough, Jamaal Williams prob isn’t going to give the Saints much this year and doesn’t look great, but this was a tough matchup.

Olave looks like he willl pay off that 2nd round ADP. Shaheed is going to have some big games once again and is heavily featured in this offense. Reverses, screens, deep balls, etc. Juwan and Big Mike will be factors as well.

Saints could use Kamara back asap and Kendre Miller.

Ryan Tannehill was atrocious, Saints D is tough and Lattimore is a great player, but he kept forcing balls to Hopkins, once missing a wide open Burks that would have went for a 60 yd TD. Derrick Henry needs to stay involved in the pass game on screens and such. Tannehill may be benched or hurt before Week 6.

Raiders @ Broncos

Jimmy G played great outside a INT In the end zone. Very accurate, posted and huge scramble at the end to end it.

Jakobi Myers is going to have a solid season. Looks great and Jimmy loves throwing him the ball. Bigger games for Adams ahead. Jimmy looks as good as I’ve seen him in this offense. Jacobs ran well but Raiders line was being blown up by the Broncos. Jacobs had huge workload again.

Russ played well in first half, fell off in the 2nd. Needs to get Juedy back soon. Dulchich was also a big loss, Trautman is decent but isn’t going to make big plays. Perine looked better than Javonte, Javonte doesn’t seem to have that full force he had before the injury, could get better as season goes on, but Perine is going to have value each week.

Cards @ Commanders

Defensive game. Howell was Ok, some nice throws, but also some big mistakes, pick and fumble for a TD, plus could have had another Pick. Still, some strong throws and nice runs including a TD run. This is Brian Robinson’s backfield, Gibson fumbled and didn’t do much. Robinson moves the ball and churns out yards, nothing flashy he’s a grinder, also made a nice catch including a TD catch. Terry looks healthy , Dotson did Ok, not sure how much you can expect with Howell tossing it, but Cards D did play well and look to be a good unit overall. Logan Thomas a lot of targets but also had two drops.

Dobbs is decent but he’s not going to give you big plays. Moore and Brown both used on reverses. Zach Ertz is dust but should get a to of targets, they should just move on to McBride. Connor going to be in for a rough year in this offense. Line doesn’t look good and Idk how many Td’s he’s getting, maybe 4?

Phins @. Chargers

Tyreek Hill wow. Tua also made a ton of big throws, one bad decision forcing to Cracraft maybe could have been picked another time. Not sure about the Chargers defensive Scheme and secondary, doesn’t look great but you are facing two elite WRS in Hill and Waddle. That opened up things for Berrios and Cracraft who both were productive and possibly could be used in Fantasy. Mostert scored, but this is mostly a pass 1st offense. Will get more muddled when Jeff Wilson returns.

Herbert played ok, was faced with a lot of pressure, but missed some throws, but made some good ones as well. Big Mike left the game then came back. A lot of 5 WR for the Chargers but no real rhythm. Ekeler remains there best offensive player. Weakness of the Miami D looks to be their Run D as the Chargers ran down their throats. Chargers Line looks good. Herbert couldn’t finish at the end because of intentional grounding then got blitzed to death and had no chance to put them in position to win it.

Rams @ Seattle

Stafford looks back and very healthy. Throwing Darts and dimes, Puka Nucua is going to be a main benefactor while Kupp is out and should remain valuable most of the year, Tutu Atwell was also creating separation and heavily involved. Not giving up on Van Jefferson yet, but was an afterthought in this game and he did drop abut what would have been a 40 yd gain. Kyren got a good amount of work plus two GL Looks that went for tds. Akers also got one, he was inefficient at the end they were running the clock out and Seattle knew what was coming. Akers should have better games ahead but Kyren is not going away.

Rams D looks improved also, Geno didn’t really have any big plays, the coverage was tight most of the day on everyone. Ken Walker had some nice runs, he prob needs more carries and they need to get more creative with him.

Eagles @ Patriots

Kenny Gainwell looks to be RB1 in that Miles Sanders role from last year. Swift played sparingly, dropped his one target. See if him and/or Penny work in more as season goes on. Goedert with the doughnut, Hurts missed him wide open on a corner route, forced it downfield to Smith.

Mac Jones looks much better in this offense. Hunter Henry might be in for a rebound season. Zeke will help Stevenson stay fresh and healthy, but not going to put any major dent into his production.
