Fantasy Savvy 2012: Fantasy Five, Week 1

By: Kevin Lewis

Bills at Jets

Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills

Synopsis: Let me preface this by saying that I like Stevie Johnson in fantasy this year. He’s a WR2 who you can get at bargain basement prices. That being said, I don’t expect him to do much of anything this week. With the talk of his overplayed success being popular all week, I expect Darrelle Revis to send him a clear message on Sunday. He’s a “Do Not Start” for me.

I actually think both these QBs are being unfairly discarded from a fantasy standpoint. I’ve never seen a QB account for 32 touchdowns and not get drafted the following year, but that is where we are with Mark Sanchez. I think folks are brainwashed by the potential of Tebow, who is awful, taking over. But if you’ve watched both of them play QB, it’s quite obvious that Sanchez is much better. I get that Tebow will slice into a lot of work inside the 10, but Sanchez should be at worst, a good bye week substitution.

While I’m not a big fan of Ryan Fitzpatrick from a reality standpoint, last year he was doing well fantasy wise before he hurt his ribs. Buffalo plans on spreading it out, and Fitzpatrick has a decent mix of weapons at his disposal including two running backs that are pass catching threats.

Speaking of backs, I expect Fred Jackson to show this season the same things he showed before he broke his leg last season. I fully expect that he will be a top 7-8 fantasy back and be a steal with where he’s going in drafts (I’ve never seen him go before round 3). Even with a relatively strong performance last season, I’m not buying CJ Spiller being a significant factor out of the backfield for Buffalo this season. I think folks are overthinking in that regard and I think folks forgot what Jackson was doing before he got hurt last season. That being said, I like Spiller as a decent flex option with potential for more with a Jackson injury. I actually don’t like either this week as I think the Jets defense is out to send a message but Jackson may get a TD. Spiller may cause damage out of the backfield, especially with three and four WR’s on the field. The Jets don’t have anyone to contend with him really.

Prediction: Jets 24 Bills 14

Atlanta Falcons @ Kansas City Chiefs

Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs

Synopsis:  Matt Ryan, Jamaal Charles, Tony Gonzalez, Roddy White, Dwayne Bowe, Julio Jones, Michael Turner, Jacquizz Rodgers. There are a lot of prominent fantasy names featured in this contest.

Many are high on Matt Ryan this season. I have even seen a few people pick him to win NFL MVP. From a reality standpoint, I think he’s immensely overrated but from a fantasy standpoint I can see a little uptick in his numbers. First of all, I think Julio Jones will be the second best WR in fantasy this year (second only to Megatron). Second of all, the consistently productive Roddy White and steady Tony Gonzalez surround Jones. Possibly the biggest reason for a potential breakout for Matt Ryan is the fact that Michael Turner is declining and there might be a need for a more heavy reliance on Ryan. That is also why I like Jacquizz Rodgers. Atlanta should pass the ball more, and Rodgers is more useful in that setting. I have Ryan in the second tier of QBs with guys like Tony Romo, Eli Manning, and Philip Rivers.

It will be interesting to see what Jamaal Charles does after missing an entire season with an ACL tear. He relies heavily on lateral quickness. The positive is that, unlike Adrian Peterson and Rashard Mendenhall, he’s had plenty of time to recover. The Chiefs run blocking is pretty good, and Charles had a robust 6.1 YPC in 2009/2010 on 420 carries. If he’s healthy, he should be incredibly productive. Only downside is that he will never score a lot of touchdowns but he did score 16 touchdowns in 2009/2010 and that is more than enough not to sap his value. Peyton Hillis may have some value as a flex because Kansas City should be running the ball plenty. Dwayne Bowe, for all his shortcomings, had 1100 yards and 5 touchdowns catching the ball from Tyler Palko and Kyle Orton the last two months. He should have a big year.

Last note, Dexter McCluster may have some use as a flex option in deeper leagues, because he may get plenty of touches as a safety valve of sorts. Prediction: Atlanta 27 Kansas City 20

Washington @ New Orleans

Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins

Synopsis: Reality speaking, I really think the Saints will blow the Redskins out. Onto the fantasy side, there are interesting subplots at RB here on both sides. With Washington, you have the maddening tendency of Mike Shanahan to play Russian Roulette with his running backs. And with New Orleans, you have the conundrum that is Mark Ingram.

On the Redskins side, Roy Helu had a productive rookie season once he was inserted into the lineup, but now is second on the depth chart to the apparently less talented Evan Royster. In addition to that, rumblings about Alfred Morris became louder as camp progressed on. This situation is frustrating for me as a fantasy owner because I have Helu on three different teams as a late flier. In my eyes he is clearly the best back on the team but the Shanahan’s play around with the depth chart too much. The potential is there but the return likely won’t be because of circumstances Helu can’t control.

On the Saints side, you know what Darren Sproles is going to give you. He’s difficult to cover out of the backfield, and the short passes to him are like an extended running game for the Saints. The interesting player here is Mark Ingram. He struggled with injuries and had a general lack of productivity last year but he does have talent and he is setup to be a goalline back on arguably the most potent offense in football.  I think he is a good value where he is going because he can probably be a #2 back on your team and you’re getting him for #3 back/flex prices.

Who will start opposite Pierre Garcon for the Redskins? Who will fill Robert Meachem’s shoes? How will Jimmy Graham follow up his historic season last year? Who ends up being next in line behind Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston? What does Robert Griffin put forth in his rookie campaign? Prediction:  New Orleans 45 Washington 21

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

San Francisco @ Green Bay

Synopsis: I think Jermichael Finley is in for a breakout season this year. I think he’ll go for 1000+ yards. Why? I don’t really know. I’m not a huge fan of his mental makeup but the guy’s talent is so tantalizing, and you’d think more attention will be paid to Jordy Nelson who was second in the NFL in touchdowns last season. I like Finley as a top five tight end this year. Obviously, this is a tough matchup for him and the rest of the Packer offense.

Randall Cobb is a super sleeper for me, especially in leagues that keep track of return yards. Rodgers took kindly to him whenever he was on the field at wide receiver last year. With Driver being phased out a bit because of his decline, maybe Cobb’s workload increases. He’s shifty and runs good routes, and plays with the best QB in the sport. I see good things on the horizon.

On the 49ers side, Frank Gore is getting up there in “running back age”, and has quite a few miles on his tires. He had a rough second half of last year as he averaged less than four yards per carry and scored three touchdowns. The 49ers responded to that by signing Brandon Jacobs, and drafting LaMichael James to go with camp standout. Given a decline in the second half last year, and a conservative offense where his catches are practically eliminated because of being a consistent blocker, it’s not hard to see a scenario where Gore is no longer a RB1 caliber player. Kendall Hunter is a good late flier too as he’s impressed in camp, and Gore as mentioned is older and injury prone.

We’ll see if the 49ers continue to use Vernon Davis like they did in the playoffs where he had standout games against the Giants and Saints. If he does, he can be a top three TE. If not he’ll be what he was last year, an inconsistent player with a big game every now and again. Prediction: Packers 24 49ers 20

Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos

Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos

Synopsis: Pittsburgh’s running back situation is loaded with question marks. Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer are pretty unremarkable talents and Rashard Mendenhall is fresh off an ACL injury and nobody knows when he’s coming back.

Todd Haley likes to throw the ball, and Ben Roethlisberger has a full arsenal of weapons. The line is spotty, but that’s never deterred Roethlisberger before. If Mike Wallace isn’t bitten by the typical post holdout lack of production, Roethlisberger could turn out to be a steal in the later rounds.

I also believe Antonio Brown will be the best fantasy WR on the Steelers and will end up top 10 overall in PPR formats. He’s in for a monster year.

On the Broncos, the most interesting developments will be the Eric Decker/DeMaryius Thomas dynamic and what McGahee will do now that the offense isn’t as run heavy. Without Tebow, and the defenses focusing to stop him in the game how will McGahee do? Who will be the more productive WR? DeMaryius or Decker? Will Peyton Manning’s neck hold up?

What will Jacob Tamme do? Unsurprisingly all of this hinges on Manning and just how healthy/productive he is. As far as this week, I’m not sure I like Manning in his first game against a defense that has given him trouble in the past. Long term though, I love the value with him.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 27 Denver 21

Fantasy Savvy- Start Em’ Sit Em’ Week 9 Edition

Were nine weeks into the 2011 season, the fog is settling, the sunshine is glowing, and things are starting to appear more clear in Fantasy Land. Overall, pretty sound recommendations in Week 8 with the advisement of starting Jackie Battle, Heath Miller, and Antonio Brown while suggesting to sit the extremely disappointing Chris Johnson. There is no doubt that more thunderstorms are ahead, we can never be perfect, but we continue to press forward through this vast season and use the knowledge gained throughout the year to build as much momentum as possible going into each new week.

Disclaimer: Kickers and Defenses are left out each week, also I try to leave the most obvious selections out. Start Tom Brady!!

QB’s Start Em’

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys vs Seattle

I wanna start out discussing Tony Romo, who has left owners slightly disappointed thus far. In his last two games, Romo has thrown just 2 TD’s and is only averaging around 180 passing yards. Romo does have four 300-yard passing games this season, but at the same time he’s been inconsistent with three games where he’s failed to throw for more than one TD. Owners were simply expecting more high-class performances from Romo when they drafted him. As much as I hate to make excuses for Romo, the guy played through a pretty bad rib injury, had both of his starting wideouts suffer through injuries, while working under a pretty poor offensive line. The point is, things are looking up for Romo. His schedule eases up bigtime, his wideouts are healthy and they have found new success in the running game with DeMarco Murray. Romo’s uptick will begin this week against Seattle. Seattle isn’t terrible against the pass ranked 18th and having allowed just 8 Passing TD’s, but this is a matchup that Romo and his counterparts Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten can exploit. Dallas will be focused and ready for this game following the brutal loss against Philly, and with plenty of possessions for the offense created by the Dallas defense, look for Romo to approach the 300-yard mark and finish with at least 2 TD’s.

Matt Cassel, Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami

I don’t think I’ve recommended Cassel all year, but he and his AFC West leading Kansas City Chiefs are starting to play good football. Props goes toTodd Haley, after starting 0-3 with reports of him being on the hot seat, he got it turned around without Stars Jamal Charles and Eric Berry as the Chiefs have reeled off four straight wins to take the division lead. Cassel hasn’t been lights out but he does have a respectable five TD’s in his last 3 games while throwing for over 250 yards in three out of his last four games. In Week 5 against against the winless Indianapolis Colts, Cassel threw for four TD’s and 257 yards. Cassel may not throw four TD’s, but I expect his numbers to be very solid against the only other winless team in the NFL, the Miami Dolphins. Look for around 250 yards passing with at least 2 TD’s, making Cassel a respectable start in Week 9.

Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons @ Indianapolis

We’ve pointed out Ryan’s brutal numbers in past editions, but so far this year Ryan has only thrown for more than one TD, one time. The fourth-year QB has looked inaccurate, and the arm strength has been lacking more than ever it seems. However, Ryan has two things working for him, first the bye week came at an ideal time and second, coming off that bye he gets an easy matchup against the Colts, who have allowed the most passing TD’s (15). If Ryan doesn’t get it going this week then I don’t know when he will. Julio Jones is returning, he got two weeks to clear his head and re-focus and now they face the lowly Colts. Ryan could throw three TD’s in this matchup.

Sit Em’

Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia

Just stay away from this one if you are contemplating Cuter at all. Philly’s talented secondary is finally playing to their potential and these Chicago wideouts simply cannot cause any problems for them. The Bears will focus on running the football and winning this game on defense.

Matt Schaub, Houston Texans @ Cleveland

The Cleveland secondary led by Joe Haden is for real ranking 2nd against the pass and 3rd in points allowed to QB’s. With Andre Johnson’sstatus in question once again, Schaub needs to be benched.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills vs New York Jets

Fitzy started out hot, has cooled down some but still has been very serviceable this season with 14 TD’s and 1700 yards through seven games. But this is a week to sit him against the Jets. New York has allowed just four passing TD’s as they are ranked #1 when it comes to defending Fantasy QB’sRevis will slow Johnson, Cromartie can handle David Nelson and Bills TE Scott Chandler doesn’t really pose a threat to Nickelback Kyle Wilson or Safety Jim Leohnard.

RB’s Start Em’

Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis, New England Patriots vs New York Giants

The Law Firm is frustrating, one week he is excellent and the next he could throw up a complete dud like last week. It was crazy to see 35 year-oldKevin Faulk step into this offense after more than a year and a half off and play more snaps than Green-Ellis. BJGE was solid the three weeks prior to last, so I think he gets back to it in Week 9 against the Giants who are allowing the 25th most points to Fantasy RB’s. I expect him to find the endzone in this game and finish with around 60 yards rushing.

Steven Jackson, St. Louis Rams @ Arizona

Jackson has been running surprisingly well of late, last week tearing up the Saints defense for 159 yards and two TD’s. This week he gets another good matchup against the Cardinals who have allowed a league-high 11 rushing TD’s. But after this game I would look to trade Jackson, I think the he starts to wear out down the stretch as he faces a very tough playoff schedule against the Seahawks, Bengals and Steelers. Start Jackson this week and then sell high.

Jackie Battle, Kansas City Chiefs @ Miami Dolphins

Battle made the list in Week 8 and didn’t disappoint finishing exactly with what we predicted with 70 yards rushing and a score. So we ride with Battle again in solid matchup against the Dolphins. The Chiefs should move the ball and Battle will be the benefactor around the goal line. Look for similar numbers to last week.

Sit Em’

DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys vs Seattle Seahawks

This is hard for me, because I love the way Murray has been running and and also because of the fact that I own Murray in a couple of leagues, but I am trying to avoid the obvious choices. Murray does have a very tough matchup against Seattle’s run defense that is allowing a league low 3.2 Yardsper carryThey have also only allowed five rushing TD’s which is tied for 11th best. Again, this is a tough choice here, but if you have better options then Murray this week, stick with that. I think there is a chance Murray could find the endzone but I don’t think he finishes with over 60 yards rushing.

Ryan Torain, Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers

Ok, this one is easy. The Redskins are playing horrible football right now, Torain who is the #1 back now that Tim Hightower is out for the year isn’t producing, although he hasn’t had a chance to produce. But the 49ers have been absolutely stout against the run allowing just 74 yards per game and one rushing TD all year. I think Torain still has some value this year and will have some nice games, but this is most definitely a matchup you want to avoid at all costs.

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens

Mendenhall has been a fantasy bust this year with just one 100-yard game all season. The Steelers will not be able to run the ball against the Ravens and their third ranked run defense. Like Torain, this is another matchup to avoid however you can.

WR’s Start Em’

Miles Austin & Dez Byrant, Dallas Cowboys vs Seattle Seahawks

Both Austin and Byrant were shut down and held under 30 yards receiving last week. Austin hasn’t done anything of significance since breaking out for three TD’s in Week 2. But this week the Cowboys pass game will start getting back on track and I believe both Austin and Bryant will have fairly solid games. Look for both to finish with over 75 yards receiving and at least one if not both of them to score. Austin is a good trade target right now, as owners could be down on him, now is the time to buy, same with Bryant although he will be higher priced.

Jon Baldwin, Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins

The talented 6’4 230-pound rookie returned from injury in week 8 and finished with 82 yards and a score. Baldwin showed his big play ability and also showed fairly solid route-running on Monday night against San Diego. I believe Baldwin is going to have some nice games to finish this season and this week he could prove to be a very nice play against the Dolphins and their 27th ranked pass defense.

Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers vs Pittsburgh

Last week I talked about Brown and how his rapport with Big Ben would continue to grow throughout the season. Brown now has 16 catches in his last two games for 169 yards and a score. With Hines Ward still banged up and questionable, Brown will find open room against Baltimore as they focus on Mike Wallace. Brown is a nice trade target, he could really finish this season strong.

Sit Em’

Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills vs New York Jets

You guys should know by now that I love Stevie Johnson, but again it’s two words, Darrelle Revis.

Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans, vs Cincinnati

Washington finished with two TD’s last week one catching and one running, but this week he must be benched against the Bengals and their 9th ranked pass defense. Washington will produce little, keep him reserved.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oakland Raiders vs Denver

Bey coming off the bye, two weeks to build rapport with Carson Palmer, looks like a decent start right? Not really, Palmer stinks until proven otherwise and Heyward Bey will draw Champ Bailey for most of the game. Bey is most effective on deep routes and is not really a great route runner, so Champ who will have his eyes on Palmer while watching Bey and will prevent Bey from doing much. Champ might pick off a pass that is attempted to Bey deep, remember that I wrote this.

TE’s Start Em’

Brent Celek, Philadelphia Eagles vs Chicago Bears

The Eagles are finally starting to utilize the talents of Celek, probably because they realize they need to get him the ball if defenses are trying to take away Maclin and Jackson. As most of us know when Vick was in Atlanta he loved his TE Alge Crumpler, so this could possibly be an emergence by Celek here. The last two weeks Celek has 11 catches for 136 yards and two scores. Stick with Celek as he has the hot hand right now and is also facing the Bears Defense who are letting up the 2nd most points to Tight Ends this season.

Fred Davis, Washington Redskins vs San Francisco

I pointed out last week that Davis was an every week starter regardless of matchup. He is the Skins number one target and will be as long as Santana Moss continues to be sidelined. The 49ers defense as we know has been great this year, but they are allowing the 6th most points to Fantasy Tight Ends. Davis has to be in your lineup.

Dustin Keller, New York Jets @ Buffalo

I have selected Keller a few times and he’s let me down, but I like this spot here. Coming off the bye I think the Jets will make it a point to get Keller more involved. Buffalo also hasn’t been great at defending the Tight End, ranked 24th.

Sit Em’

Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

Miller is really the only Tight End I could see benching this week, the rest were so obvious It’s not even worth stating their names. Guys like Scott Chandler, Zach Miller, Kevin Boss, womp womp. I really love the way Miller has been playing the last two weeks, he has been running great routes and Ben has been targeting him a bunch, but Baltimore is #1 in defending Tight Ends, allowing just 6 points a week on average. I wouldn’t totally avoid Miller, but if you have better options stick with them based on Baltimore’s great defense of the Tight End position.

IDP’s Start Em’

Tamba Hali, LB, Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins

The young, talented Hali had two sacks and 3 tackles last week against the Chargers on Monday Night and it gets even better this week against Miami and Matt Moore who was sacked six times last week by the Giants. Look for Hali to finish with at least two sacks in this game and put constant pressure on Moore.

Aldon Smith, LB,DE, San Francisco 49ers @ Washington

Smith was recently named NFC Defensive Rookie of the month for October. He has seven sacks so far and has been very impressive for a rookie. He should be able to get to John Beck and enjoy a nice game as he and the 49ers defense wreak havoc on the Skins.

Quentin Mikell, S, St. Louis Rams @ Arizona

Kevin Kolb is questionable for the Cardinals and that means two things. First, John Skelton might start and second a lot of running with Beanie Wells. Mikell could pick off a pass from the brutal Skelton and will have a chance to rack up plenty of tackles defending against the run.

Sit Em’

Eric Weddle, S, San Diego Chargers vs Green Bay

Weddle picked off two Matt Cassel throws last week, but this week he goes against the hottest QB in the NFL in Aaron Rodgers. He won’t be picking off any passes this week and the Pack really don’t run the ball all that much so Weddle’s tackles will be limited as well.

Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills

I am betting the Harvard grad Fitzpatrick won’t be as careless as Matt Moore and challenge Revis like Moore did. Revis has 3 Int’s in his last 2 games, but I don’t think he gets one here as Fitz plays it very safe against him.

Fantasy Previews (1 O’clock Breakdowns)

By Alan Squatrito

Bills vs. Lions

The Bills have their greatest chance this week to get their first win playing at home. They play the Lions with Matthew Stafford out with a shoulder separation. Shaun Hill is as good of a backup you can possibly have and it won’t be easy for the Bills to stop him. I expect this to be a very good game down the wire and I also expect Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best to be great flex fantasy plays this weekend. Calvin Johnson was shut down last weekend against the Jets but I think he will bounce back in a big way. I like Steve Johnson to have a good fantasy numbers as well for a number two wide out this week. The Lions gave up an average of 3.7 yards a carry last weekend so Fred Jackson should be contained but will have a decent day. C.J. Spiller has a lot more upside, they just need to give him the ball.

Bears vs. Vikings

The Vikings squeaked out a much-needed win last week but they only started to play well when their backs were against the wall against one of the worst teams in football. Luckily for the Vikings their defense finally stepped up to play getting 6 sacks in the game. They had six sacks all season prior to week 9. The Chicago Bears offensive line has major problems protecting Cutler and they barely give him time to throw the deep ball. I picture Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, and Devin Hester having the most impact this week for the Bears. Devin Hester is due to have at least one breakout game this season. Besides Percy Harvin, Greg Camarillo seems to have the most upside as a wide receiver for the Vikings with Bernard Berrian questionable with a groin injury. Coach Childress also said that Camarillo will be on the field a lot more going forward. I like Shiancoe in this game as well because he is a clutch player and a much-needed go to guy for Favre. I am not a big fan of Forte this weekend unless they spread him out wide for a couple nice plays. All in all I like the Vikings to win this game in Soldier Field because they are still in do or die mode and are looking forward to Sidney Rice coming back on the field soon to give them better chances to win games outright going forward. There is a chance Rice plays in this game, but don’t expect a big workload if he does play.

Browns vs. Jets

The Jets are giving up 3.7 yards a carry on the ground and an average of 16 points a game to their opponents. With Peyton Hillis carrying their team each week I expect him to struggle this week against a solid Jets run defense. To make matters worse Colt McCoy is going to have another difficult challenge to deal with this weekend against Rex Ryan’s blitz first defense. They come from all over the place. Don’t get me wrong I can picture Peyton Hillis having a decent fantasy day, but not enough to carry over for a Browns’ win. I like Ladanian Tomlinson a little more than Shonn Greene this week despite that they are both good plays. Ryan has said it will be a 50/50 split, will see. Look for Santonio Holmes to have another good game and Jets defense to have an event better one. This really should be a blowout as long as the Jets don’t turn the ball over.

Colts vs. Bengals

Ochocinco was a full participant in practice on Thursday and Friday despite an ankle injury he sustained during week 9 vs. the Steelers. If the Bengals don’t win this game, they will definitely keep it close. Can the Bengals lose 6 times in a row? Cedric Benson and Ochocinco will have great games this week, as well as Carson Palmer. This game will probably go back and forth and there will probably be one huge turnover in the game to differentiate the difference of which team wins and loses. I don’t picture Donald Brown having the best fantasy day even if Bengals do let up 4.2 yards a carry. He is a low fantasy flex. I like Jacob Tamme and Pierre Garcon. Would I be surprised if Reggie Wayne had the best game of the wide receivers for the Colts? No, I would not be that surprised, but I think the Bengals defense is going to step up and I believe they are going to win this one on the road.

Jaguars vs. Texans

The Jags always give the Texans a tough time, but Schaub hasn’t been playing his best as a quarterback in the last couple of games. I don’t think he can be brought down for too long and I believe he will explode this game along with Joel Dreessen, Andre Johnson, and of course Arian Foster. I like Garrard as a number one quarterback as well and I expect Mike Sims-Walker to have a big day. This game can and should very likely go back and forth with two potent offenses and not so potent defenses facing off. I like the Texans to start competing again and beat the Jaguars this Sunday.

Dolphins vs. Titans

What a battle this game is going to be. Coach Sparano is sitting Chad Henne who has a 62 quarterback rating and is starting his old buddy Chad Pennington. This seems to be the smarter move with Henne playing poorly lately despite the great caliber teams they have beaten thus far. I don’t know if Davone Bess will keep up his consistent 6-9 catches a game but I can assure you that Chad Pennington will be very accurate with all his throws. I think that Ronnie Brown will have a good game and is a solid number two running back. Brandon Marshall needs to step up his play and stop dropping so many balls. I think he will turn it around and help the Dolphins get a much-needed win at home; this will be their first home win this season. Randy Moss usually owns the Dolphins and I expect him to have a big day with Kerry Collins (a.k.a. The Statue) throwing deep to him a few times this game. This is going to be a great game.

Buccaneers vs. Panthers

This game isn’t last on my list for a reason, but now that it is, sure why not. This is the worst game of the week with Mike Goodson starting at running back and rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen running the show. Yuck. The Buccaneers defense plays well at home and I expect them to play exceptionally well this weekend. Goodson is known to have fumbling problems and Clausen is known to have throwing interception problems. LeGarrette Blount will be a solid number one start this weekend and he will chew off the clock in the fourth to close the game out. I expect Mike Williams to keep his great play continuing but I also like Kellen Winslow to emerge this weekend as the coaching staff was talking earlier in the week how they want to devise a game plan to get him more involved. This should be a blowout.

Fantasy Savvy Player Rankings (Week 8)

QB’s

  1. Peyton Manning vs. HOU
  2. Matt Schaub @ IND
  3. Phillip Rivers vs. TEN
  4. Ben Roethlisberger @ NO
  5. Aaron Rodgers @ NYJ
  6. Drew Brees vs. PIT- I have a feeling this is the week Brees and the Saints break out of this slump even though they face the league’s best defense. Just a hunch.
  7. Tom Brady vs. MIN
  8. Kyle Orton vs. SF
  9. Matthew Stafford vs. WAS- Stafford returns this week against 31st ranked pass defense. Solid start.

10.  Chad Henne @ CIN- Bengals have struggled against the pass and Henne has been more efficient as of late.

11.  Matt Cassel vs. BUF

12.  Carson Palmer vs. MIA

13.  Ryan Fitzpatrick @ KC- Tough matchup but should be able to throw for 200 yards and a score.

14.  Brett Favre @ NE – Think he’ll play and keep that streak going, if not Tavaris Jackson will get the nod.

15.  Josh Freeman @ ARI

16.  Mark Sanchez vs. GB

17.  Jon Kitna vs. JAX- Kitna with a full week of practice with the starters and facing the Jaguars defense at home could have a nice day.

18.  Donavan McNabb @ DET- The Lions haven’t been bad against the pass and McNabb coming off a terrible game in Chicago.

19.  Sam Bradford vs. CAR

20.  Matt Moore @ STL

21.  David Garrard @ DAL

22.  Matt Hasselback @ OAK

23.  Bruce Gradkowski/Jason Campbell vs. SEA- not sure whose going to go yet, but either way not a great matchup.

24.  Max Hall vs. TB

25.  Vince Young @ SD- Hate this matchup especially coming off the injury. SD 1st against the pass and 4th against the run make VY a must bench.

26.  Troy Smith vs. DEN- Gets his first start as a Niner, in London and will likely struggle but like him better than David Carr.

27.  Tavaris Jackson @ NE- May get the start in New England but isn’t starter worthy at this point.

RB’s

1) Adrian Peterson @ NE- Vikings will be geared towards the run whether or not Farve plays.

2) Frank Gore vs Denver- Game is in London, Troy Smith starting means Gore will get 25+ carries against a Broncos Run D that was gashed by Run DMC last week.

3) Beanie Wells vs TB- Beanie will have a huge game against TB and their 31st ranked run D. Coach Whisenhunt just declared Beanie the starter, expect him to get 25+ carries in this game.

4) Rashad Mendenhall @ NO- Steelers will run the ball to keep Brees off the field and they will do it with success.

5) Arian Foster @ Indy- Foster abused this Colts run D in week 1, but Colts had bye week to fix their mistakes and will do a bit of a better job on him this time, Foster still gets his though.

6) Chris Johnson @ SD- Quiet game last week, expect a rebound.

7) Jamal Charles vs Buffalo- Is this the week he goes for 150+ on the ground? It’s gonna happen sooner than later.

8) Darren Mcfadden vs Sea- Seattle has a tough run D, but Mcfadden is running beastly right now and can exploit the weak side of the Seattle D.

8A) Steven Jackson vs Car- Will get a 100 yards and possibly a score which is rare for SJ.

9) Maurice Jones-Drew @ Dallas- Finally got the receiving numbers last week, expect that to continue as he will be focal point of the offense.

10) Ryan Torain @ Det- Ran for a 125 vs Chicago, he should be able to go for a 100 against Detroit, may see a TD too.

11) Jahvid Best @ Washington- Bye week helped him rest his Turf Toes, not 100% yet but close. This guy could go nuts at anytime.

12) Felix Jones vs Jac- Jaguars pass d is brutal and their run d isn’t much better ranked 25th, Jones is a great option in ppr leagues this week.

13) Ladainian Tomlinson vs GB- Looked great before the bye week, now with a week to rest he will be fresh and put up solid numbers against GB.

14) Thomas Jones vs Buffalo- Buffalo has the worst run d in the Nfl and Jones will grind out yards against them. Look for about 80 yards and a TD.

15) Marshawn Lynch @ Oakland- Lynch is averaging under 3 YPC as a Seahawk, but should find some running room against the Raiders porous Run D.

16) Ronnie Brown @ Cincy- Cincy’s Run D has been bad this year ranked 22nd and got gashed last week by Michael Turner. Brown might have his best game of the year.

17) Jonathan Stewart @ STL- Looks DeAngelo will be out, so Stewart will take the reins and should have a fairly solid day.

18) Cedric Benson @ Miami- Not crazy about Benson, probably will have his usual 70 yard no TD game. Will see.

19) Donald Brown @ Houston- Looks like Addai will be out, but stay tuned. If he is Brown should take the majority of the carries over Mike Hart.

20) Ryan Matthews vs Ten- Matthews is getting healthier and averaging 4.7 YPC but Norv Turner hasn’t called his number enough, might change this week.

21) Shonn Greene vs GB- Rex Ryan says Greene will be heavily involved going forward. Will see, could be great news for Owners who stuck with Greene or Owners who bought low.

22) Knoshown Moreno vs SF- Questionable with hammy, risky start if he plays.

22 A) Fred Jackson @ KC- KC has a dead solid, Run D ranked 6th overall.

23) Danny Woodhead vs Minnesota- Brandon Jackson found some success last week against Minny’s Run D, they aren’t as tough as they used to be and Woodhead will be a factor in the pass game.

24) Legarette Blount @ Arizona- Should get the most carries but will still split time with Cadillac and Earnest Graham for now.

25) Brandon Jackson @ NYJ- Running a bit better of late, but real tough matchup. Still Jackson has shown improvement.

26) Chris Ivory vs Pittsburgh

27) Ricky Williams @ Cincy

28) Cadillac Williams @ Arizona

29) Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis vs Minnesota

30) Darren Sproles vs Ten

31) Mike Hart vs Houston

32) Marion Barber vs Jax

33) C.J. Spiller @ KC- if the Bills would only get him the ball

34) Justin Forsett @ Oakland

35) Michael Bush vs Sea

36) Tim Hightower @ Oakland – looks to be in the doghouse after 2 more fumbles last week

37) Mike Tolbert vs Ten

38) Derrick Ward @ Indy

39) Ladell Betts vs Pitt

40) Toby Gerhart @ NE

WR’s

  1. Reggie Wayne vs. HOU
  2. Calvin Johnson vs. WAS
  3. Andre Johnson @ IND
  4. Miles Austin vs. JAX
  5. Brandon Marshall @ CIN
  6. Santana Moss @ DET
  7. Mike Wallace @ NO- The Saints are vulnerable to the big play, and Mike Wallace is just the guy to expose them.
  8. Randy Moss @ NE – If Favre plays, he’ll have a big welcome back to New England game, If Tavaris Jackson starts, move Moss down about 15 spots
  9. Brandon Lloyd vs. SF- I expect him to bounce back in a big way this week.

10.  Greg Jennings @ NYJ

11.  Steve Smith(CAR) @ STL

12.  Marques Colston vs. PIT

13.  Pierre Garcon vs. HOU

14.  Dwayne Bowe vs. BUF- Expect a third straight big game out of this guy.

15.  Terrell Owens vs. Mia

16.  Wes Welker vs. MIN

17.  Percy Harvin @ NE- Obviously without Favre bump him down, but not as much as Moss, only about 5-6 spots.

18.  Hines Ward @ NO

19.  Kenny Britt @ SD- I know he’s against the top pass defense in the NFL but after last week, how could you put him outside the top 20?

20.  Larry Fitzgerald vs. TB

21.  Patrick Crayton vs. TEN

22.  Chad OchoCinco vs. MIA

23.  Santonio Holmes vs. GB- Holmes will get more involved in the passing game this week.

24.  Mike Williams(TB) @ ARI

25.  Steve Johnson @ KC

26.  Dez Bryant vs. JAX

27.  Nate Burleson vs. WAS- The Redskins rank 31st against the pass, so Burleson could put up a solid day.

28.  Donald Driver @ NYJ

29.  Deion Branch vs. MIN

30.  Davone Bess @ CIN

31.  Jacoby Jones @ IND

32.  Braylon Edwards vs. GB

33.  Danny Amendola vs. CAR

34.  Jabar Gaffney vs. SF

35.  Mike Thomas @ DAL

36.  Michael Crabtree vs. DEN

37.  Robert Meachem vs. PIT

38.  Roy Williams vs. JAX

39.  Mike Williams(SEA) @ OAK

40.  Lee Evans @ KC- He’ll be lined up against Brandon Flowers and I don’t see him having a huge day like the past two weeks.

41.  Lance Moore vs. PIT

42.  Mike Sims-Walker @ DAL

43.  Steve Breaston vs. TB- Should return from knee injury, but don’t expect a big day just yet.

44.  Eddie Royal vs. SF

45.  Nate Washington @ SD

46.  Buster Davis vs. TEN

47.  Darrius Heyward-Bey vs. SEA

48.  David Gettis @ STL- I wouldn’t expect a game where he surpasses the century mark and gets in the end zone again, but 50-60 yards is feasible.

49.  James Jones @ NYJ

50.  Anthony Gonzalez vs. HOU- Expected back finally this week, could be a sleeper since he is the number three option without Collie and Clark.

TE’s

1) Jason Witten vs Jax- Kitna will target him a ton.

2) Antonio Gates vs Ten

3) Chris Cooley @ Detroit

4) Dustin Keller vs GB

5) Vernon Davis vs Denver

Week 7 Recap

We find ourselves in week 7 of the fantasy season.  A time when most teams have a good idea of what to expect from their squad.  Unfortunately though, fantasy isn’t that easy.  Injuries in week 7 have made it tough, Tony Romo, Brett Favre, and Dallas Clark owners, I feel your pain.  As if it’s not bad enough that some of the best fantasy players had byes this week.  I wasn’t at all upset though when I went up against a team this week missing Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, and Arian Foster.  Sometimes those bye weeks can be oh so sweet!  Let’s take a look at some of the players who hit it big this week…and also those players who missed worse than a Jay Cutler post pass.

Quarterbacks:
As happens almost every year some of the best fantasy quarterbacks come out of virtually nowhere.  In a week where Drew Brees throws 4 picks against the Browns, it’s the absolute fantasy dynamo Ryan Fitzpatrick whose tossing 4 TD’s.  As much as it must pain some owners to look at Ryan Fitzpatrick in your starting QB spot, keep in mind in his 4 starts this season, he’s thrown at least 2 Td’s in each game.  The past 2 weeks alone Fitzpatrick has gone for 594 yards and 7 TD’s to just 2 INT’s.  Trust me, you can do a lot worse, take it from a guy who had to start Brett Favre this week.
Fitzpatrick isn’t the only one putting up some impressive numbers.  Carson Palmer got stuck in a shootout, and surely angered many owners who have him on their bench.  412 yards and 3 TD’s later, you may be hoping Cincy’s D struggles enough to warrant Palmer airing it out all game.  His countepart in this one was Matt Ryan.  Ryan took a little hit in his draft position this year due to a drop in his numbers from his rookie season.  Many thought with a healthy Michael Turner that Atlanta would pound the ball more.  However Ryan has done a nice job through the air, throwing at least 1 TD in 6 straight contests.  In 4 of those games he’s thrown for at least 2 scores.
Early on it looked as if the Jay Cutler/Mike Martz duo would be bringing a high flying act to Chicago.  Wow, how that has crashed and burned.  Yes, it’s an easy shot at Cutler after he threw 4 INT’s on sunday.  The bigger concern for fantasy owners is the fact that Cutler has only 1 TD pass in his last 3 games.  Fitzpatrick looks a lot better now doesn’t he?

Running Backs:
Chris Johnson was the consensus number 1 pick in most fantasy drafts this summer, and for good reason.  Is he having as great a season as he did last year?  No.  Is he still on pace for 1,400 yards rushing? Yep.  Don’t let yourself get down about this week.  66 yards and only 2.8 YPC.  The story of the day was Kerry Collins and Kenny Britt, CJ will have plenty of opportunities down the stretch.
Last year the Vikings were able to rely on Brett Favre to sling the rock around.  Adrian Peterson had a great year, yes, but Favre was incredible through the air.  Well, this year things aren’t so pretty in Minnesota.  Seeing Favre throw wildly to Green Bay all night, the Vikings were handing off to Peterson till late in the 4th quarter knowing they had to score.  I think the Vikings realize that their best chance to succeed is handing it off to number 28.  AP accounted for 171 total yards and a TD.  If Favre misses any time, teams will surely stack the box against the run.  Unfortunately for defenses, AP is not one to be contained.  He’ll still put up numbers no matter who takes the snaps.
A year after Adrian Peterson exploded on the league, another back was coming into the league with as much hype as any back in recent memory.  Once your labeled a “Bust” it can be almost impossible to have it removed, but Darren McFadden is making quite a case.  After seeing time behind the likes of Justin Fargas and Michael Bush, McFadden took the opportunity awarded him by a pre-season injury to Bush to make a fantasy statement.  Although injuries are still a big problem for McFadden, who has already missed 2 games this season, he’s been a revelation when healthy.  No performance was better then his 196 total yards and 4 TD’s this sunday.
The leading rusher in the NFL?  None other then the spark plug that handles the ball out of the backfield for the New York Giants, Ahmad Bradshaw.  Over the past 4 weeks Bradshaw has eclipsed the 100 yard mark 3 times, while averaging 111 yards a contest.  The only negative for Bradshaw owners is the sudden case of LenDale White disease that Brandon Jacobs has come down with, snatching Touchdowns away from Bradshaw who only has 3 on the season.
One other breakout back this past week was Michael Turner.  Turner owners have been waiting for a breakout all year and finally received it with 121 yards and 2 TD’s from the Falcon’s back.  Turner is a health risk, and the Falcons know this.  Sunday was only the second game this season that Turner has gotten 20 carries.
Has their been a more disappointing running back this year then Beanie Wells?  Wells came on strong at the end of last season and was listed as a breakout candidate in most fantasy publications.  An injury to start the season didn’t hurt, but after playing in 4 games wells has accumulated only 183 yards rushing and pushed across the goal line for the first time this week.  That sound you hear coming from New Orleans may very well be Christopher Ivory falling back to earth.  Last week he broke out with 158 yards on the ground, and this week the undrafted free agent played…well…like an undrafted free agent.

Receivers:
Quick, who’s the best fantasy receiver in the NFL right now?  Let’s take a little trip down south to Atlanta…Rowdy Roddy White.  White hauled in 11 passes for 201 yards and 2 scores on Sunday.  Nothing impresses me more than a receiver who the defense knows is getting the ball and still can’t stop.  White has been a top 10 receiver for the past few years, and it’s about time he gets some respect as one of the most consistent fantasy performers week in and week out.
Hakeem Nicks seemed to make a disappearing act last week against Detroit when he caught 3 balls for a mere 8 yards.  But take it from someone with the honor of watching Nicks perform every week the only thing disappearing will be a roster spot on the Pro Bowl roster in the NFC.  Nicks bagged 9 balls for 108 yards and 2 TD’s on Monday Night.  This marks the third week this season Nicks has secured at least 2 TD’s.  Nicks’ 8 TD’s lead all receivers, and anyone who doubted Nicks spot as a bonafide WR1 better start believing now.
Kenny Britt makes for an odd fantasy conundrum.  He absolutely exploded with 7 catches for 225 yards and 3 scores on Sunday.  And he’s scored in 5 straight contests.  However up until Sunday he’d managed less than 3 catches a contest.  Britt needs to also find away to keep out of the spotlight off the field.  For now though, as long as the TD’s keep rolling in, keep rolling the dice on Britt.
Somebody tell Terrell Owens it’s not 2003.  Over the past 3 weeks T.O. has gone off.  26 catches, 412 yards and 3 TD’s.  Chad Ochocinco and T.O. may not bring many wins for the Bengals, but us fantasy owners don’t really care do we?
Some other receivers had monster weeks this week as well.  Steve Johnson…yes…Steve Johnson.  If you don’t know him, well, not a lot of people do.  But he’s a guy who’ll be finding ways onto rosters in the coming weeks.  Sunday Johnson pulled in 8 balls for 158 yards and a score.  The 4th consecutive week he’s found the end zone.  Johnson’s teammate Lee Evans found the end zone 3 times this week and went over the 100 yard mark for the first time this year.  Out of the two however, it’s Johnson you want on your team.  Trust me.     Dwayne Bowe drops a lot of passes.  Fantasy owners don’t mind though as long as the Chiefs still throw it to him.  Bowe has scored 2 TD’s in each of the past 2 weeks. Since Ben Roethlisberger has come back, Mike Wallace has found the end zone in both games.  Wallace’s value will only go up.
Time to take a look at the value, or lack thereof, of Miles Austin.  The past 2 weeks combined, Miles Austin has a measly 5 catches for 50 yards and 0 scores.  Surely the loss of Tony Romo hurts his value even more.  Am I saying that you should sit Austin?  Absolutely not.  But be aware that with Romo hurt and Dez Bryant getting more acclimated to the offense, Austin isn’t the sure bet he was early in the season.

Tight Ends:
While Dallas Clark fans weep, Antonio Gates owners jump for joy.  The past couple years other tight ends have tried to knock Antonio Gates off the throne as best tight end in fantasy football.  This  year Gates has responded.  Gates looked to be shaken up after last week, but owners let out a collective sigh of relief as he came back with another big week.  Gates had one week where he caught only 2 passes for 12 yards.  In every other game this year, Gates has gained at least 50 yards and scored in each one.  I can tell you this, Antonio Gates owners do not miss Vincent Jackson.  Vernon Davis was one of those tight ends last year, making a run at fantasy tight end MVP.  Don’t look now, but he’s heating up.  The 49ers may be struggling mightily as a team, but Davis has found the end zone in each of the last 4 games.

Yea Get em in, Nah, Bench that guy (Start Em, Sit Em Week 7)

By: Steve DeAngelo

As always, we try to leave the obvious choices out. Of course if you need to be reminded we will make sure to do that. Let’s get to it! Tomorrow we will be releasing our Rankings and Matchups. Stay Tuned. Send any lineup questions to SteveDeAngelo@gmail.com or @ Twitter.Com/FantasySavvy

Get Em In

QB’s

Carson Palmer @ Atlanta

Palmer has not looked like himself since his knee surgery, especially this year with a lot of inaccurate passes and also showing lack of the arm strength he once had. That said, he still is an above average Fantasy QB with great weapons surrounding him. Chad Ochocinco has vowed to get back on track and I think he will. He was playing with a dislocated finger and a cracked rib so the bye week definitely helped him. I think the bye week came at a good time for the Bengals and Palmer after that brutal loss to Tampa Bay at home where Palmer threw some costly interceptions. This week he gets Atlanta and their 25th ranked pass defense. They are still ranked 25th despite facing Dennis Dixon, Alex Smith, Derek Anderson and Seneca Wallace in 4 of their 6 games. That bodes well for Palmer, Ocho and T.O. I think the Bengals win this game and Palmer has nice success moving the ball.

Chad Henne vs Pittsburgh

At first glance your initial impression is probably to sit Henne against a tough physical Pittsburgh Defense. However Pittsburgh’s strength is in their Run Defense which is the best in the league. Miami’s gameplan will be to attack this secondary that is letting up 233 yards a game through the air. Pittsburgh has only allowed 3 passing TD’s all year but I think Henne will get two of them this week. Brandon Marshall is on fire right now with Henne and Pittsburgh has no answer for him, then again most teams don’t. Also the talented Devone Bess has been playing at a high level. Look for Henne to give you around 250 yards through the air with multiple TD’s.

Matt Haselback vs Arizona

I don’t like this guy to stay consistent at all through the year and think he stinks personally, but if there is a week to use him it’s this week against Arizona. We all know Arizona’s secondary isn’t any good as evidenced by their 26th overall ranking against the pass. Mike Williams should have a fairly good game again and Deon Butler will get open. Also John Carlson is a threat. Hasselback makes for a good bye week filler. I expect him to finish around 250 yards with a couple of TD’s.

Nah

Kevin Kolb @ Tennessee

After doubting Kolb, he has bounced back nicely the last two weeks looking like a different QB than he did earlier in the year. That said, I don’t like this matchup for him against a feisty Tennessee Pass D and without his best wideout in Desean Jackson. Kolb is going to struggle in this spot on the road and without his best playmaker. Look for other options this week.

Get Em In

RB’s

Thomas Jones vs Jacksonville

Jones has looked good all year, still running hard and showing burst even able to still to that corner at the age of 31. The guy keeps himself in better shape than most and it shows on the field. Jacksonville is more notorious for the horrendous pass d, but their Rush D isn’t much better ranked at 19th in the league. The reason I really like Jones this week is because of the scoring opportunities he will have. Kansas City should be able to move the ball at ease on this Defense and should have plenty of possessions with Todd Bouman playing QB for the Jaguars. Jones should see the endzone at least once and two TD’s is very likely. Get him in. Also of course get Jamal Charles in your lineups, you never sit him with his explosiveness.

Peyton Hillis @ New Orleans

Hillis has struggled to run the past two weeks as he’s been a little banged up and has faced to solid run D’s in Atlanta and especially Pittsburgh. However this week he will see success against the New Orleans Run D. Hillis is a big bruising back and he will churn yards against this D. Also even if they are trailing with Colt Mcoy in the 2nd half Hillis will remain a factor in the pass game as he has had just under 50 yards receiving the last two weeks. Hillis is going to see a heavy workload this week get him in your lineups.

Marshawn Lynch vs Arizona

Lynch didn’t have a great game yardage wise last week with only 44 yards on 17 carries but still finished with a TD. That was against a tough Bears run D, this week it gets much , much easier against the swiss cheese Arizona Run D ranked 29th in the NFL and letting up 140 yards per game. Lynch is going to have field day against this defense and will see the endzone at least once. Make sure to get him in there.

Nah

Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams vs Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh’s Run D is the best in the league only letting up 63 yards a game. Don’t even think about it.

Maurice Jones-Drew @ K.C.

Obviously you didn’t take Jones-Drew 3rd/4th in your draft or spend $40+ dollars in auctions to sit him, but if you have better options than I would sit him this week. Jones Drew has only 1 100 yard game all year and only has two TD’s. He really hasn’t looked the same and his knee has to be bothering him some or at least slowed him down. Also not helping Jones-Drew is his offensive line, they are simply not opening holes for him. You definitely should be testing the trade waters right now for Jones-Drew. This week it gets worse for the Human Bowling ball as both Garrard and Trent Edwards are out leaving duties to Todd Bouman. K.C’s Run D is already solid at 5th in league but now they will get even stronger as they will be able to crowd the box to focus on Drew. If you have better options leave Drew on your bench.

Ryan Torain @ Chicago, Matt Forte vs Skins

Torain had a good game last week going for a 100 yards and a TD but it was against an undersized Colts D. Torain is decently talented, he can hit holes and run with power, but he isn’t explosive and isn’t the most agile back. Things will get tougher this week against a stout Bears Run D ranked # 3 in the league led by Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs. Keep Torain on your bench this week and maybe see if you can move him before Sunday, he isn’t a good bet to stay healthy.

Until Mike Martz decides to run the ball more than Forte will not be a good option. When Martz was forced to run the ball with Todd Collins at QB against Carolina Forte excelled running for 140 yards with a couple of TD’s. Forte is not getting the carries he needs to produce and in this matchup against a brutal pass D in Washington you can bet Martz is lickin his chops looking to pass a ton. Problem is , he will continue to put his QB Jay Cutler at risk, stay unbalanced and continue to be an overrated offensive coordinator.

Others to bench- Michael Bush, Darren Mcfadden @ Denver, Brandon Jackson vs Minnesota

Get Em In

WR’s

Devonne Bess vs Pittsburgh

More so in PPR leagues but Bess makes a nice flex play this week. Brandon Marshall is going to see a lot of attention so that should leave plenty of opportunities for Bess. I see at least about 6-7 catches with about 70 yards and a possible score.

Dwayne Bowe vs Jacksonville

Bowe broke out last week for 100+ yards and two TD’s against the porous Houston pass D and now gets another great matchup against Jacksonville. Like the President of the United States would say, “Make no mistake” Bowe won’t only produce against inferior defenses, he’s too talented. There is a concern with Cassell at QB but Haley and Weiss got him involved in the gameplan last week and will continue to do so. Cassell can’t throw downfield but he certainly can throw drags and crossing routes and Bowe with his run after the catch talents is a beast on those routes. Also Bowe is great in the redzone with his size.

Johnny Knox vs Washington

Knox had a nice game last week as Cutler returned from a concussion finishing with 120 yards and 5 catches. He probably has his best matchup he has had all year this week against the Skins and their 31st pass D. Knox should have a nice day get him in there.

Danario Alexander @ TB

This kid is talented with great size at 6’5.  He arguably could have been the more talented wideout at Missouri over Jeremy Maclin. With Injuries to Mark Clayton, Laurent Robinson and Donnie Avery Alexander got the call last week and produced with 76 yards and a TD. Sam Bradford is not playing like a rookie QB right now and as you saw with Mark Clayton he likes to focus on one receiver. Alexander is an injury risk going forward with 4 knee surgeries in his career but for this week is a solid play. Alexander could prove to be a stud with that size and speed combo, he should definitely be rostered right now. Remember the young 1st year-2nd year wideouts that have produced big over the years mostly have been big physical wideouts ala Randy Moss, Marques Colston, Brandon Marshall, Calvin Johnson etc.

Deion Branch @ San Diego

Some people think last week was a fluke for Branch. It wasn’t, Branch is still a great route runner and gets open. He now has a QB in Tom Brady that can get him the ball on a consistent basis. It was also impressive to see the chemistry these two had after all the years without each other. Branch might not be a TD machine but he will get the catches and put up yards starting alongside Wes Welker. Get him in your lineups.

Mike Williams vs Arizona

Williams had a 100 yard game last week and it should continue for one more week against Arizona. Don’t bet on him for the long-term though. Sell after this week.

Steve Smith vs San Fran

Smith has been out the last two couple weeks and hasn’t done much with Jimmy Claussen under center. But with Matt Moore returning Smith will show his talents once again. In his last five games with Matt Moore at QB, Smith has averaged 88 yards and a touchdown. Get him in your lineups.

Patrick Crayton vs New England

Crayton is coming off a 100 yard game last week and it should continue this week against New England and their #29th ranked pass D. Antonio Gates will be a game time decision, Malcolm Floyd already has been ruled out and Legedu Naanee and Craig Davis are both questionable. Crayton will be Rivers #1 option this week. Get him in your lineups, he’s a nice start this week.

Nah

Steve Johnson @ Baltimore

Since Ryan Fitzpatrick has taken over at QB, Steve Johnson has been his man with 4 Td’s in his last two games. However don’t bank on that this week against Baltimore. They will give Fitzpatrick trouble allday and he will most likely will keep him out of the endzone. Leave Johnson on your bench this week.

Get Em In

TE’s

Heath Miller @ Miami

One game back with Big Ben and Miller gets back to Fantasy relevance with 50 yards and a TD. Ben likes to connect with Heath so Miller should be in your lineups almost every week going forward unless you have better options.

Ben Watson @ New Orleans

The Saints are allowing the 30th most points allowed to Tight Ends this year and Watson is having a solid year so far with 318 yards and Two TD’s. The Young Colt Mcoy will rely on Watson a lot in this game so look for Watson to finish with 5+ catches and around 60+ yards with a possible TD. Watson has always been talented he was just kinda caged in that New England offense. He is a nice start this week and a good option going forward.

Tony Moeaki vs Jacksonville

Moeaki had a great matchup last week as well vs Houston but disappointed with only 2 catches for 21 yards. However he won’t be shut down twice and will enjoy a nice game vs even an arguably worse Pass D. If you’re an Moeaki owner don’t be discouraged by last week’s effort, he will get it going this week.

Nah

Kellen Winslow vs St. Louis

This is a St. Louis Defense that ranks 3rd in points allowed to Tight Ends. Winslow also hasn’t found the endzone all year. With his catches and yards being limited this week, look for better options.

Greg Olsen vs Washington

Yes Tight Ends die with Mike Martz. He doesn’t know how to use them and right now needs Olsen to protect Jay Cutler. Olsen has back to back games without a catch, leave him on your bench.

Start! Get em in – Don’t Start! Leave Em Be- Week 5

By : Steve DeAngelo

Week 5! Wow. Anyway, your weekly Start Em , Sit em, Get them in, Get them out , Bring em to the party , Leave the nerds at home column is here. Again I am trying to leave out the no brainers out as much as possible, but If I feel you need to be reminded then I will list it here. Make sure to check into our Radio Show tonight at 11:30 est. If you can’t listen live, you can download anytime or listen on demand. Blogtalkradio.com/Fantasysavvy.

QB’s to Start

Shaun Hill vs STL

Hill has been pretty solid this year filling in for the injured Matthew Stafford. In 2 of his 3 starts he has gone over 300 yards and thrown for 2 TD’s.  This week at home on the turf where his skill players (Megatron and Jahvid Best) can take full advantage of their speed, Hill is a quality guy to start. Hill has been targeting Calvin Johnson a ton and has developed a nice relationship with his tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler as well. Nate Burelson also returns this week which will help. Look for Hill to pass in the high 200′s and finish with at least 2 TD’s.

Ryan Fitzpatrick vs Jacksonville

If your options are minimal this week, then Fitzpatrick is not a terrible guy to go with. The Jaguars are letting up the most points to Fantasy QB’s as of now and are even worst than Houston which is hard to imagine. Fitz has a pretty decent arm and can get it downfield. He has developed a nice little relationship with Steve Johnson who has went for TD’s back to back weeks with Fitz at the helm. 250 yards with multiple TD’s from Fitz is extremely likely this week against the horrific Jaguars Pass D.

Sam Bradford @ Detroit

The Young Sam Bradford and his St. Louis Rams are 2-2 as they head to Detroit. Bradford has played fairly well for a Rookie QB, despite throwing 6 Int’s he has 6 TD’s and has thrown for just under 1,000 yards in 4 games. Detroit as we know doesn’t possess a good defense and currently they are allowing the 26th most points to QB’s. Look for Bradford to throw 1-2 TD’s and get over the 200 yard mark as he continues to mesh with Mark Clayton and dump some passes off to Steven Jackson.

Other more viable options , don’t be shy- Brett Favre @ NYJ, Mark Sanchez Vs Minnesota, Eli Manning @ Houston!, Matt Ryan @ Cle, Carson Palmer vs TB- Eli and Ryan are must starts this week

QB’s to Sit

Kevin Kolb @ SF

Yes Kolb has the weapons in Mcoy, Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Brent Celek but this guy to me really isn’t anything special. He loves to checkdown with little dink and dunk passes. Lesean Mcoy had 12 catches last week as a result. When Kolb goes deep he is inaccurate as he really hurts Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin’s value. The 49ers are home and are desperate for a win after coming up short yet again last week vs Atlanta. While San Fran’s D hasn’t been the greatest against the pass this year they still did a pretty nice job last week vs Matt Ryan. Sit Kolb this week as I don’t think he throws for anymore than 225 yards and a TD as the 49ers play their most inspired game of the year.

David Garrard @ Buffalo

At home you can think about Starting Garrard but on the road fughedabouit. Dating back to last year, in 9 games on the road David Garrard has just 4 TD’s and posts only a 75 QB rating. The guy is just brutal when he’s away from home. The winds will be swirling in Buffalo as fall is upon us and the Jaguars are going to be focusing on the run vs Buffalo’s weak run defense. Mike Sims-Welker has virtually disappeared and his other receiving options are nothing to write home about. Just stay away from Garrard this week.

Others that shouldn’t touch your lineup- Todd Collins @ Carolina, Josh Freeman @ Cincinnati, Jake Delhomme vs Atlanta, Max Hall vs New Orleans, Jimmy Claussen vs Chicago

RB’s to Start

C.J Spiller vs Jacksonville

Now with Marshawn Lynch finally gone things should open up for Spiller, despite Chan Gailey saying that Fred Jackson would lead the team in carries. The Bills drafted the guy ninth overall and his talent is easily visible but the bills refuse to name him the starter. So for the time being this situation will be similar to the Thomas Jones/ Jamal Charles situation in Kansas City. Still, the Bills will get Spiller more looks this week and he should be effective against a weak Jacksonville defense (22nd most points to RB’s). Spiller is a good flex play this week and even better in PPR leagues. It’s just a matter of time before this guy breaks a couple plays that make you say WOW. Spiller should see at least 15 touches this week any less than that and the Bills are dopes and will lose as a result.

Ryan Matthews and Mike Tolbert @ Oakland

While Matthews was out with an ankle sprain, Mike Tolbert showed off his talents especially last week as he went over 100 yards. Matthews did return last week but didn’t see full action because of his ankle, also he hurt his elbow in practice leading up to the game and had it heavily wrapped against Arizona. Because of this it appears Tolbert is going to see a bigger role now, although Matthews should still dominant the carries. Oakland’s Run D is awful, 31 most points let up to Fantasy RB’s and the Chargers now have won 13 in a row vs Oakland by an average of 14 points. Because of this there should be plenty of carries to go around for Matthews and Tolbert. I like Matthews as a #2 RB this week and Tolbert as a flex. Get them both in your lineups.

Felix Jones vs Tennessee

Jerry Jones has vowed to get Felix more involved to give this run game a spark, so look for that to happen this week against the Titans. Jones, really hasn’t seen many touches thus far as he only has is averaging about 9 touches per game. He really needs to see the ball more, especially in the passing game where he only has 4 catches this year. Darren Mcfadden tore up this Titans defense in Week 1 with his quickness so there is no reason Jones can’t do the same providing he gets a good amount of touches. I think coming off the bye week the Boyz and Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett will get Felix the ball more than ever and Jones will prove to be a nice Flex play.

Beanie Wells vs New Orleans

New Orleans Achilles heal right now is stopping the run as they are 29th in points allowed to Fantasy RB’s. The Cardinals will be looking to keep the Saints offense off the field and take pressure of their Rookie QB Max Hall as they try to pound the run. Beanie Wells complained last week after not seeing his first carry until late in the 2nd half. He said he was going to have a discussion with Coach Whisenhunt. Look for Beanie to be focused and come out running real hard and Whisenhunt will surely be giving Beanie plenty of carries in this game. The only concern you have here is if the Cardinals D can slow down the Saints and their passing offense. Regardless I think Beanie will see at least 15-20 carries and will get near the 100 yard mark. He makes for a nice flex play this week.

Other more viable options Jamal Charles @ Indy, Ahmad Bradshaw @ Houston, Cedric Benson vs TB

RB’s to Sit

Shonn Greene vs Minnesota

Greene saw his first 100 yard game of the year last week vs Buffalo but it gets a whole lot tougher this week as the Jets face Minnesota and their infamous Run D. The lanes up the middle are not gonna be easy to get through with Pat ” the fat” Williams filling the gaps. It also doesn’t help that L.T. is getting more looks and is taking the goal line carries. Look for other options this week as Greene probably won’t go over 50 yards.

Michael Turner @ Cleveland

Turner really only seems to feast on the weaker Run defenses and really doesn’t impress much against the better D’s. So this week against Cleveland (3rd fewest points let up to RB’s) I would sit him. Also I really don’t think Turner’s body is at full strength and Jason Snelling continues to steal carries from him. If you have better options this week sit Turner, although Turner might see a TD I don’t think he gets over 60 yards rushing.

Stay Away- Legarrete Blount @ Cincy, Lawrence Maroney @ Baltimore, Correl Buckhalter @ Baltimore

WR’s to Start

Mario Manningham @ Houston

Manningham was shutout last week against Chicago but before that he had been averaging about 70 yards per game. I think he makes for a nice little flex play this week against the brutal Houston Pass D. There should plenty of passing in this game and I think Manningham will finish with around 5 catches for 60-80 yards and maybe a score.

Lance Moore @ Arizona

While Reggie Bush continues to be out of the lineup Lance Moore will be a factor. He now has TD’s in back to back weeks and Drew Brees loves to throw to this guy. Moore is talented as well and honestly I think he could take over being the #1 receiver on the team from Marques Colston while Bush remains out. He has a juicy matchup this week against Arizona so make sure to get him in your lineups.

T.O./ Ocho vs Tampa Bay

T.O went nuts last week for 222 yards with 10 catches and a score while Ocho was silent with just 34 yards. Have no fear with starting Ocho because things will balance out this week. I think both will have productive games as Carson Palmer keeps it going after a pretty good game last week.  Look for both to get in the endzone this week.  Getcha Popcorn Ready!!! Love that Video……

Santana Moss vs Green Bay

After a solid 3 games in a row, Santana Moss disappeared last week vs the Eagles as he had 0 catches. Very surprising but no need to panic. I think Moss bounces back this week at home vs GB. Look for Moss to catch a TD on a play action Bomb.

Mark Clayton @ Detroit

The Bradford and Clayton Oklahoma Sooner connection just keeps going every week and there is no reason for it stop this week at Detroit. Keep Clayton in your lineups as he will probably go for about 70-80 yards with TD.

Steve Johnson vs Jacksonville

Fitzpatrick and Johnson now have connected for TD’s in back to back weeks and I expect them to continue the streak this week against Jacksonville. In deeper leagues Johnson makes for a nice little flex play this week. Johnson possess good size at 6’2 and 202 pounds and is fairly talented. Look for a 70 yard game with a score this week.

WR’s to Sit

Mike Williams @ Cincinnati

There is no doubt that rookie Mike Williams is talented but this week will not be easy, going against two of the better corners in the league in Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph. This tandem, arguably the most talented in the league is only letting up the 6th most points to Wideouts this year. That coupled with the inexperience of Josh Freeman and you should keep Williams on your bench this week. I don’t think Tampa gets into the endzone.

Johnny Knox @ Carolina

As most of you know yet another Mike Martz QB is sidelined as Jay Cutler suffered a concussion last week and is out this Sunday against Carolina. In comes Todd Collins who really is nothing to write home about. So avoid all bears wideouts this week including Johnny Knox.

Roy Williams vs Tennessee

Don’t get overly excited about Williams 100 yard 2 TD effort vs Houston two weeks ago. Houston’s secondary is brutal , although Roy did look pretty good. Still, look for the Cowboys and Tony Romo to look back to Miles Austin this week as well as getting Dez Bryant more involved. Also like I stated Felix Jones will be getting more looks this week. Sit Roy because he probably won’t go over 40 yards.

Shouldn’t see your lineups- Legedu Naanee @ Oakland, Demaryius Thomas @ Baltimore,

TE’s to Start

Tony Moeaki @ Indy

Moeaki is Cassell’s favorite target right now and should be in your lineups. Look for the Iowa rookie to finish with around 5 catches for 70 yards. BTW Indy is letting up the fewest points to Tight ends but they also haven’t faced a solid tight end all year (Kevin Boss, Owen Daniels who is hurt, and Mercedes Lewis). Don’t let that stat stop you from Sitting MOEAKIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vishante Shiancoe @ NYJ

A lot of experts are saying Shiancoe’s value goes down with the presence of Randy Moss. I disagree, I think it just opens things up even more for Shiancoe. Eventually teams would have started focusing more on him knowing he was Farve’s favorite target but now with Moss they can’t do that any longer. Look for Shiancoe to still remain a Favre favorite and put up around 50 yards with a possible score.

Jeremy Shockey @ Arizona

Like Lance Moore, Shockey is seeing an increase in targets with the absence of Bush. In two games with Bush out, Shockey has 14 catches for 135 yards and a TD. Shockey should continue that production this week against Arizona, get him in your lineups.

Others to consider- Jermaine Gresham vs TB, Shawn Nelson vs Jacksonville
