FantasySavvy: Week 2, Fantasy Five

By: Kevin Lewis

Chicago Bears @ Green Bay Packers

Jay Cutler had 333 yards and 2 touchdowns last week against the Colts. The Green Bay secondary looks like they still haven’t figured out how to stop any halfway decent passing attack. With Brandon Marshall back in the fold, I expect Cutler to go for over 300 again, with a couple of touchdowns. Start him in all formats.

Brandon Marshall, in his first game back with Jay Cutler, played like he never left him. Marshall was the most targeted WR in football for the two years he played with Cutler for the Denver Broncos. That trend seemed to continue as Cutler targeted Marshall 15 times and he caught 9 passes for 119 yards. Marshall, much like his QB, should have a huge game against a beleaguered Packers secondary. I expect 6+ catches, 80+ yards and a touchdown.  Start him in all formats confidently.

While the 49ers running game is a different animal, Frank Gore did average 7 yards per carry on Sunday. Matt Forte had  a solid game against Indianapolis as he touched the ball 18 times for 120 yards (15 carries for 80 yards and 3 carries for 40 yards). Michael Bush had 12 carries for 42 yards but scored two touchdowns. Forte is a viable play in any league format, while Michael Bush may be a decent flex play in deeper leagues.

Randall Cobb had nine catches for 77 yards and a punt return for a touchdown. The Packers are employing him in a similar fashion to the Vikings with Percy Harvin. Cobb was essentially the Packers third down back last week, and with Greg Jennings probably out he should see more touches. I’d start Cobb as a flex this week with confidence in PPR leagues and probably sit him for now in standard leagues unless return yardage is counted.

Cedric Benson had a snoozer in the game against the 49ers as he had 9 carries for 18 yards. I think Benson will have some kind of value this year even with that. The 49ers are the best defense in football for a reason and the Packers were behind for the entire game. That said, the Bears are no cupcakes either, and I wouldn’t start Benson this week unless you’re absolutely desperate which shouldn’t be the case in Week 2.

With Jennings likely out, the onus of the Packers passing offense in the WR corps is now on Jordy Nelson. He had 5 catches for 67 yards last week, and I don’t see any reason why Nelson won’t do at least that this week. Yes the Bears defense is really good, but Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the sport, and Nelson will be targeted early and often. I’d expect a cool 6 catches and 90 yards or so.

New York Jets @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Despite the fact that Mark Sanchez looked really good in the win over the Buffalo Bills last week, I’d hesitate having him as anything more than a QB2 this week. The Pittsburgh Steelers defense, headlined by Dick Lebeau, is a different animal.  They are going to be angry after the undressing by Peyton Manning last week, and the Jets won’t have much of a running game to take pressure off Sanchez. I’d keep Sanchez on my bench and keep him in mind when the matchups become more favorable.

Even with a lack of confidence in Sanchez putting together a good fantasy line against the Steelers, I have confidence in Santonio Holmes this week. I find it hard to believe that Stephen Hill will have the success that he did last week, and Dustin Keller seems to be more of a decoy than anything. Jeremy Kerley is also battling a bad back. But besides that Holmes can just flat out get open. He was open several times last week, and nearly had two touchdown catches. I expect him to have a nice game in his old stomping grounds. I think he’ll have something to the tune of 5 catches for 75 and a touchdown. If you’re looking for a guy to start and have Santonio Holmes, start him with confidence. I’d stay away from every other Jet however.

Last week the Steelers played it close to the vest and ran the ball quite a bit despite the fact that it wasn’t bringing them good returns. It was a bit odd, but I expect the Steelers to open it up going forward, starting this week.

Despite the fact that I think the Steelers will open it up after realizing they can’t run on the Jets, I’d still be hesitant to start Ben Roethlisberger because the Jets pass defense is still excellent and the Steelers offensive line is still shaky. He may put up #s on sheer volume but I wouldn’t bank on it. If you have a comparable or better option, sit Ben Roethlisberger this week.

With Darrelle Revis’ status up in the air for the game, it’s hard to definitively say anything about the Steelers WRs, but I’ll try my best. Assuming he plays, I think he’ll draw a lot of Antonio Brown. In that case I wouldn’t start him. If he doesn’t play, Brown will probably see a lot of Kyle Wilson and Brown would probably run wild in that instance. I don’t expect much from Mike Wallace as Antonio Cromartie has been very effective against him since joining the Jets, so if you have a better option sit Wallace.

The guy to start for the Steelers is Heath Miler. The Jets have had trouble covering tight ends for as long as I can remember and the Steelers have vowed to involve Miller in the offense more. Miller will be going against guys like Bart Scott, Laron Landry and David Harris. None of those guys are adept in coverage so Miller should have a nice day. 5 catches for 60 yards and a touchdown isn’t out of the realm for him on Sunday.

I’d stay away from any of the Steeler running backs until that situation clears itself up a little bit.

Tennessee Titans @ San Diego Chargers

Philip Rivers had an efficient game last week but didn’t make much of an impact fantasy wise, as the Raiders seemed content with playing a bend but don’t break kind of defense. The Chargers line looks a bit spotty, and Rivers has new weapons to navigate but I’d start him this week. I like Rivers a lot this year mainly because I thought his demise was greatly exaggerated.

Chris Johnson’s week 1 performance did nothing to silence the doubts still remaining about Johnson after his lackluster 2011 campaign. He had 11 carries for a whopping FOUR yards. I don’t know if it’s the blocking, if he’s a misfit in the scheme or what have you but he needs to play better. I’d start him again this week but I’d have a far shorter leash with him this year than last year regardless of the fact that he’s probably your first round pick.

The Titans passing game this week is question marks abound. I think Jake Locker is in for a breakout season but he is already hurt. Kenny Britt is returning from suspension/injury and should be on a pitch count. Kendall Wright is in his second professional game. The only one of the Titans pass catchers I’d start is Jared Cook. He caught 4 passes for 64 yards in the opener and in the most encouraging bit of news is that he played the vast majority of the snaps. I would trot Jared Cook out there with confidence this week.

Given Ryan Mathews plays at 4 ET on Sunday, I’d bench him until he’s no longer in question to play. It might hurt if he plays and produces but an 0-fer is not something you can take.

I wouldn’t start any of the Charger pass catchers outside of Antonio Gates. It’s too muddled with the receivers in San Diego to confidently start any of them.

Tampa Bay @ New York Giants

Not that I expect him to have a huge impact on the game, but stay patient with David Wilson. For one, he’s really talented. For two, Ahmad Bradshaw is always injured.

Buy low on Hakeem Nicks. Between his injury and his quiet week 1, you may be able to get him for a lower price than usual this week. Take advantage. Otherwise, if you have him, feel comfortable starting him in any format. He will get going eventually and it may be this week

Don’t let Victor Cruz’ drops affect your thinking on him. His #s may drop this season based on the sheer fact that last season isn’t replicable but he had 11 drops last year as well. Drops will not affect his production.

The Buccaneers gave Doug Martin 28 carries last week. Greg Schiano likened him to Ray Rice so I can see this trend continuing. Josh Freeman isn’t very good and someone has to move the ball in Tampa. I’d continue to start Martin and feel comfortable with it. The Giants let DeMarco Murray get loose on a few runs. The only problem with Martin is the passing game might not be good enough to get him in position for touchdowns.

I’m not big on Vincent Jackson this year, mainly because Josh Freeman isn’t very good. At the same time, Freeman has to throw the ball to someone. I’d start Jackson this week and hope for the best.

Buffalo @ Kansas City

The Bills secondary looked inept last week in making Mark Sanchez look like Joe Montana. While I don’t think highly of Matt Cassel, I do think there will be opportunities in the passing game for the Chiefs. I think Dexter McCluster is a nice flex play in PPR leagues this year. He started off with 6 catches for 82 yards last week. Buffalo had trouble with Jeremy Kerley last week and I expect much of the same with McCluster.

Though Dwayne Bowe didn’t do much last week, I’d start him this week. Last year he produced with Tyler Palko and Kyle Orton as his QBs for half the year. Buffalo’s secondary isn’t very good, and if their pass rush is as inept as it was last week, there should be plenty of opportunities. Much like McCluster, I’d start Bowe with confidence this week.

You obviously start Jamaal Charles, but I think Peyton Hillis is a borderline start worthy play this week. I’d let him actually prove something before I throw him in as a flex though. Kansas City will run the ball a lot.

With the Bills losing Fred Jackson and David Nelson, I’d keep an eye on Donald Jones. I think he’s a sneaky good play in deeper leagues and a guy to keep an eye on otherwise. Last season, he was open quite a bit but Fitzpatrick couldn’t find him. Now with Nelson out, Jones should see some opportunities. If you’re in need of a flex, trot him out there, especially in PPR leagues. Fitzpatrick doesn’t have a great arm, and the Bills throw a lot of short passes so he should see a lot of opportunities.

Outside of CJ Spiller, there is nobody that is a can’t miss start for Buffalo this week.

Bears News

LB Lance Briggs(ankle) was able to practice Friday and is expected to start Sunday. IDP leaguers get him back into your lineups against the Redskins.

Bills News

No Major injuries effecting your fantasy squad.

Broncos News

CB Champ Bailey(ribs) has the best chance at playing this week over the rest of the Broncos on the injury report. WR Eddie Royal(groin) participated in a limited fashion during Friday’s practice and will be a game time decision. If you have another option, use him over Royal who even if he does play won’t be 100%.

Browns News

RB Peyton Hillis(quadricep) is probable this week and should play in a pretty good matchup against the Saints. WR/KR Josh Cribbs (concussion) is expected to play Sunday. WR Mohammed Massaquoi(concussion) is listed as doubtful and likely won’t suit up against the Saints. Rookie QB Colt McCoy will get the start once again this week while QB’s Jake Delhomme(ankle) and Seneca Wallace (ankle) sit out.

Buccaneers News

RB Earnest Graham (hamstring) is questionable this week and isn’t likely to play Sunday. Cadillac Williams and LaGarette Blount are expected to shoulder the load in a good matchup against the Rams. TE Kellen Winslow(knee) practiced in full late this week and will play Sunday.

Cardinals News

WR’s Steve Breaston(knee) and Early Doucet (groin) are both being considered game time decisions. If you have other options or cannot wait until the 4pm game to make a roster decision, look elsewhere. Rookie WR Stephen Williams (back) is not likely to play Sunday and could miss some more time as he is dealing with a small fracture in his back.

Chargers News

WR’s Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee(hamstring) are both unlikely to play Sunday in what would be great matchup against the Patriots. TE Antonio Gates(toe) will be a game time decision, but many close to the Chargers believe Gates will play. RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) practiced in full Friday and will start. Mathews is a high end RB2 against the weak Pats defense.

Chiefs News

No significant Fantasy news.

Colts News

The Colts are on a bye this week, however they are just riddled with injuries. TE Dallas Clark(hand/wrist) was placed on IR ending his season. WR Austin Collie(foot) had surgery this week and will be sidelined at least two weeks. RB Joseph Addai (shoulder) is seeking a second opinion on his shoulder but sources say he will probably miss the next 4-5 weeks. There is nothing torn just some nerve damage. Donald Brown(hamstring ) would be first in line to start with Addai out but he just can’t seem to get healed up. Mike Hart would get the starting nod in Week 8 if Brown is unable to go.

Cowboys News

Dez Bryant (ribs/ankle) is fully healthy according to sources and will play Monday night against the Giants.

Dolphins News

No significant Fantasy News

Eagles News

Michael Vick(ribs) will not start Sunday but will dress and will be emergency QB. Vick is expected to return to a starting role in week 9 after next weeks bye. RB LeSean McCoy(broken rib) says his rib is not yet fully healed but has been playing through it and will continue to do so. WR Desean Jackson(concussion) will not play Sunday but will likely return week 9 after next weeks bye, as long as he passes all his tests.

CB Dunta Robinson(concussion) will not play Sunday. Robinson suffered to concussion on a devastating hit on Eagle receiver Desean Jackson who will not play this week either.

NY Giants News

NY Jets News

The Jets are on a bye this week and have no significant injuries.

QB David Garrard(concussion) will not play Sunday. Coach Jack Del Rio will not announce a starter until Sunday. It will be between Trent Edwards and Todd Bouman, neither of which is a viable option.

Lions News

The Lions are on a bye this week. QB Matthew Stafford(shoulder) is expected to return and start week 8. LB Zach Follett(stinger) was released from the hospital and thankfully will be ok. He layed motionless on the field during Sunday’s loss to the Giants after getting hit by DE Jason Pierre-Paul. It looked a lot worse and luckily he was not severely injured.

Packers News

WR Donald Driver(quadricep) returned to limited practice Friday and is listed as probable. Driver is very likely to play so keep him in your lineups. LB Clay Matthews(hamstring) is going to play Sunday but more than likely will only play on passing downs. If you don’t have other options, you have to start him, but if possible, bench him for this week as his total snaps will be limited.

Panthers News

WR Steve Smith(ankle) practiced in full and will start Sunday in a good matchup against the 49ers. Smith also gets Matt Moore back at QB and is a solid WR3 with WR2 upside this week.

Patriots News

RB Fred Taylor(turf toe) will be out once again this week. BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead will split the carries and both are decent flex plays this week, especially Woodhead in PPR leagues. WR Julian Edelman(concussion) was limited at practice Friday and will be a game time decision.

Raiders News

QB Jason Campbell(knee) is likely to start Sunday unless he has a setback. He was able to practice on a limited basis the last few days so he should be good to go. This brings some value back to the Raiders receivers, who would have had little to none with Kyle Boller at the helm. Bruce Gradkowski(shoulder) is still unable to go. RB Darren McFadden is listed as questionable still but Coach Tom Cable believes he will play Sunday against the Broncos. Run DMC will likely split carries with Michael Bush and both are good flex plays.

Joseph Addai will go for a 2nd opinion on his shoulder injury that could keep him out several weeks. Addai resting during the bye. SOURCE:@JasonLaCanfora

Raiders RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) split reps today with Michael Bush during practice. If McFadden can go close to full speed Thursday, he will play Sunday against the Broncos. He’s a great flex play along with Bush if he can play. SOURCE: Vittorio Tafur on Twitter

Panthers WR Steve Smith seems to be having another miraculous recovery from an ankle injury suffered back in Week 3. Smith practiced in full Wednesday and is expected to start Sunday against the 49ers. I don’t know what voodoo doctor he visits but I need their number. Smith is a solid WR2 if he starts even with Clausen under center.

Titans RB Chris Johnson (thigh) was limited in practice Wednesday but isn’t expected to miss Sunday’s game. Its likely just some rest for Johnson who has just been getting a huge workload thus far. We will obviously monitor this situation but I highly doubt he will miss any time. QB Vince Young (ankle, knee) was also held out of practice Wednesday and his week 7 status is still up in the air. Back QB Kerry Collins (thumb) was held out of practice today as well but it is not believed to be serious.

49ers TE Vernon Davis(knee), practiced in full Wednesday and is close to 100%. He will start Sunday against the Panthers and is a must start. SOURCE: Matt Maiocco on Twitter

Eagles Desean Jackson has not yet passed his concussion tests thus far and will likely not play Sunday. The Eagles have also officially named Kevin Kolb the starter for Sunday’s game against the Titans. SOURCE: Jeffrey McLane on Twitter

Browns Coach Eric Mangini said Wednesday, unless Seneca Wallace(ankle) and Jake Delhomme (ankle) make significant progress the next few days, rookie Colt McCoy will make his second straight start against the Saints. McCoy played well against the Steelers Sunday and could have a similiar if not better game against the suspect Saints Defense.

Titans WR Justin Gage (hamstring) returned to a full practice Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday against the Eagles. The Gage injury opened the door for Kenny Britt to start and I can’t imagine with the way Britt has played, Coach Fischer would take snaps away from Britt for Gage. Britt is undoubtedly the most talented receiver on the team, so expect Gage, not Britt’s role to be reduced going forward.

Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker (shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday and the extent of this injury is still a mystery. We’ll keep an eye on this closely as the week goes on. SOURCE: Mark Long on Twitter

Cardinals WR Early Doucet (groin) returned to practice Wednesday in limited fashion. His status for this week is still up in the air. WR Steve Breaston (knee) after practicing in full Tuesday, was limited today but I believe it was only precautionary and he should start Sunday.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was held out of practice Wednesday but isn’t expected to miss any time, just some rest. SOURCE: Kevin Acee on Twitter

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) was held out of Wednesday’s practice but is still being considered day-to-day by coach Norv Turner. He’s got a chance to play Sunday especially if he can practice either tomorrow or Friday. SOURCE: Kevin Acee on Twitter

Ravens Ray Rice was limited during Wednesday’s practice but he isn’t injured, it was just a day off so he’s good to go Sunday in a great matchup against the Bills. WR Derrick Mason (finger, ankle) was limited Wednesday but is expected to be fine and is a pretty good flex play against the Bills this week. SOURCE: Jamison Hensley on Twitter

Browns RB Peyton Hillis (quad) was limited in practice Wednesday but the fact that he did practice after being held out the last few Wednesday’s is a good sign. He’ll start Sunday against the 14th ranked run defense in the Saints.

Redskins TE Chris Cooley (concussion) participated in light drills today and has a chance to play this week. The Skins’ will be cautious with him but if he continues to have no ill effects he should start.

Dez Bryant (ribs, ankle) has been a full participant in practice this week unlike last week when he didn’t practice at all. He should be good to go Monday night against their division rivals the NY Giants. He’s a risky WR3 however since he hasn’t been very consistent during his young career.

Packers placed LB Nick Barnett on the injured reserve, thus ending his season. SOURCE: Rob Demovsky on Twitter

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (concussion) practiced Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday. Coach McCarthy said Rodgers is “ready to play” barring any unforeseen setbacks. Keep him in your lineups in a solid home matchup against the Dolphins.

Colts RB’s Joseph Addai(shoulder) and Mike Hart(hip) returned to full practices Friday and will both play, with Hart backing up Addai. Donald Brown (hamstring) didn’t practice Friday and is unlikely to play again this week. WR’s Austin Collie(foot) and Pierre Garcon(hamstring) practiced without limitations Friday and will start Sunday night in Washington.

Maurice Jones-Drew(wrist,ankle) returned to practice Friday and will start Monday night against the Titans.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson(shoulder) had his most intense practice of the week Friday and it looks like he’ll go Sunday against the Giants in a tough matchup. SOURCE: Dave Birkett on Twitter

Lions WR Nate Burleson(ankle) was limited in practice Friday but is officially listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Giants. RB Jahvid Best (toe) was also limited Friday but will start in a tough matchup Sunday.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas(ankle) has been officially ruled out for Week 6 against Tampa Bay. This was not unexpected as Thomas has been unable to practice all week. We’ll just wait and see how he feels going into week 7. Ladell Betts and Chris Ivory will once again split backfield duties. UPDATE: Thomas’s ankle sprain was originally diagnosed as a 4-6 week injury, which mean’s he’ll likely miss week 7 game as well. This is unfortunate as he is already expected to miss again and with their bye week not until week 10, it’ll be at least 5 games fantasy owners will be without Thomas. SOURCE: New Orleans Times-Picayune

Vikings QB Brett Favre(elbow) is being considered a game time decision as to whether he will play or not. He did do some light throwing Friday and should be good to go. This game could be do or die for the Vikings so I can’t imagine him not going. SOURCE: Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews practiced in full Friday and is line for more touches this week. Mike Tolbert still has value as a flex play against the Rams, but this could very well be his last week as a fantasy starter. SOURCE:  Kevin Acee on Twitter

WR Legedu Naanee (hamstring) missed practice again today and is expected to sit against the Rams. He hasn’t had any value since his great week one performance, so if you still own him, its time to cut bait. SOURCE:  Kevin Acee on Twitter

Texans WR Jacoby Jones (calf) fully practiced Friday and is expected to play Sunday against the Chiefs. SOURCE: Nick Scurfield on Twitter

RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) has still not been able to practice and is unlikely to play Sunday against the 49ers. Michael Bush will get the start and is a solid flex play this week.

Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder) isn’t expected to play Sunday and missed practice all week with this injury. Jason Campbell will get the start against the 49ers. SOURCE: Vittorio Tafur on Twitter

Broncos WR DeMaryius Thomas (head/neck) and RB Knowshon Moreno both practiced today and are looking like they’ll play Sunday against the Jets, but are both still being considered game time decisions. Neither are good plays this week, especially Thomas who has fallen to 4th on the depth chart. SOURCE: Andrew Mason on Twitter

Tampa WR Mike Williams (foot) is expected to be a game time decision Sunday against the Saints. He hasn’t practiced all week which is starting to worry me, so stay tuned early Sunday for an update. He’s a solid WR3 if he can play. SOURCE: Bucs on Twitter

10/8 Player Updates

First off, we would like to send our sincere condolences out to Albert Hayneworth and his family for the loss of his half brother, who tragically died last night in Tennessee in a motorcycle accident. We ourselves have lost someone close to us via a motorcycle accident and can understand that this is no easy thing to deal with. We wish the family the best and hope to see Albert back on the field soon.

Now on to the player news for today

Saints RB Pierre Thomas has been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Arizona. Rookie Chris Ivory and veteran Ladell Betts will likely split the load and both make solid flex plays this week.

Lions RB Jahvid Best(turf toe) was limited in practice Friday but is expected to play against the Rams. Keep him in your lineups, but check back Sunday morning for the latest update. TE Tony Scheffler was held out of practice all week but returned in limited fashion Friday. He will be a game time decision so check back Sunday morning for an update.

The Texans are expecting WR Andre Johnson(ankle) to suit up Sunday but is still considered a game time decision. WR Jacoby Jones is expected to sit with a calf injury.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew(ankle) practiced fully for the second straight day and is good to go Sunday in Buffalo in a very very good matchup.

Raiders RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) is expected to miss Sundays game against the Chargers, Michael Bush will get the start. WR’s Louis Murphy(clavicle) and Darrius Heyward-Bey(groin) both practiced fully all week and will both start. QB Bruce Gradkowski(shoulder) practiced in full Friday and is expected to play as well.

Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe(hamstring) was limited in practice once again Friday but is still listed as probable for Monday night’s game against the Jets. He is likely to play but if you have a better option and cannot wait until Monday you may want to go that route.

Eagles QB Michael Vick(ribs) has officially been ruled out for this week’s game, Kevin Kolb will start. RB LeSean McCoy(ribs) returned to practice Friday and Coach Andy Reid anticipates McCoy will “play a full game” in San Francsico. Keep an eye out Sunday morning, but all things look good for McCoy to start, he is a solid RB2 this week.

Browns QB Jake Delhomme(ankle) status is still unknown, he was limited in practice Friday and a decision isn’t expected to be made until early Sunday. Delhomme shouldn’t be in any fantasy lineups anyway, but if he plays, WR Mohammed Massaquoi does get a slight boost in value. RB Peyton Hillis (thigh) was held out of Friday’s practice and is listed as questionable although Coach Mangini fully expects Hillis to play.

On the Colts injury report, WR’s Pierre Garcon(hamstring) and Reggie Wayne(knee) both fully participated in practice again Friday and are fully expected to start Sunday. Austin Collie(foot) is listed as questionable and is expected to be a game time decision. RB’s Donald Brown(hamstring) is listed as doubtful while Joseph Addai(knee) is listed as questionable even though he practiced in full all week. We will have updates on these guys throughout the weekend so keep checking back in.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews(ankle) was limited in practice this week but is expected to start Sunday. They appear to be slowly easing him back after this ankle injury and backup Mike Tolbert is expected to have a pretty even amount of touches with Mathews. Both are solid flex options against a terrible Raider’s run defense.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno(hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday against the Ravens. Laurence Maroney and Correll Buckhalter will share the carries. Neither is a good fantasy play.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw(ankle) returned to a limited practice Friday and officially is listed as questionable for Sunday in Houston. Bradshaw has stated that he will start however. He is a low end RB2 against a the second best run defense in the league who also gets Defensive Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing back this week.

Week 5 Waiver Adds

By Mike Cannici

Here are a few guys you may want to go out and grab, either for long or short term fixes. Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes return from suspension this week, so if for some reason nobody has them rostered, go out and get them immediately. Big Ben is on a bye this week but will start week 6.

QB’s

Sam Bradford (22.9%ESPN, 56.4%MFL, 51%CBS, 33%Yahoo)- I told you guys to go out and grab him last week and hopefully you did. He’s not someone you necessarily want to rely on just yet weekly, but a good bye week filler and matchup play. If you’re someone who owned Michael Vick and need a replacement for a few weeks, he’s someone that may interest you. He’s got the Lions, Chargers and Bucs on tap the next 3 weeks and is averaging 17.4 fantasy points per game the last three weeks.

Kevin Kolb (59.1%ESPN, 66.3%MFL, 44%CBS, 38%Yahoo)- Kolb came in to Sunday’s game to replace the injured Michael Vick and didn’t wow me at all but is going to be the QB for at least week 5 and maybe beyond depending on the severity of pain threshold of Michael Vick and his rib cartilage injury. He’s got good upside and has a ton of weapons behind him. With the broken rib suffered by LeSean McCoy, the Eagles may be forced to air it out and Kolb can definitely do that as we saw a few times last season. In 12 team leagues and deeper he should be on your radar.

RB’s

Mike Bell (1.9%ESPN, 16.3%MFL, 10%CBS, 4%Yahoo)- Mike Bell will be the starter with LeSean McCoy out for at least this week after suffering a broken rib. Bell is not a great pass catcher but is a hard runner and has some talent as we saw early last season in New Orleans when Pierre Thomas was out. The Burlington County Times is reporting that the Eagles have inquired about acquiring Marshawn Lynch from the Buffalo Bills. A trade would obviously deflate Bell’s value but even if they were to acquire Lynch, at least this week Bell would probably get the bulk of the carries as Lynch would need to get acclimated to his new team and playbook. McCoy owners need to definitely grab this guy and he plays the 49ers next week which is a pretty good matchup followed by the Falcons.

Michael Bush (64.4%ESPN, 73.3%MFL, 66%CBS, 48%Yahoo)- Bush is a guy I was high on coming into the season but that preseason thumb injury allowed Darren McFadden to get some starts and McFadden was producing at a high level. He injured his hamstring Sunday and didn’t return. Bush came in, and he had already supplanted McFadden as the goal line back, but depending on the severity of the hamstring, Bush could take the every down duties away from McFadden if he were able to have a few big games. Bush finished the Sunday’s game with 56 total yards and a TD. He needs to be owned in ALL leagues.

Ladell Betts( 1.6%ESPN, 11%MFL, 13%CBS, 7%Yahoo)/Chris Ivory (0.4%ESPN, 6.4%MFL, 9%CBS, 2.4%Yahoo)- Betts got the starting nod over rookie Chris Ivory with Pierre Thomas on the shelf with an ankle injury. Both backs were productive however with Betts getting 13 carries for 47 yards while Ivory had 12 carries for 67. If Thomas were to miss any more time, the Saints would still probably go with a committee approach, but from what I saw of the game, Ivory ran much harder and had that nice quick burst to break away from defenders. Betts’ veteran leadership and experience would probably keep him in the mix without Thomas on the field, but Ivory is the guy who would be the long term solution. Both guys are worthy of a roster spot on speculation alone. Betts is a better pass catcher, so if you’re in PPR leagues you’d want to take the gamble on Betts first. Thomas’ week 5 status is still unclear, but whoever gets the start, it’s against the Cardinals so make sure you own someone in this backfield for week 5.

Kevin Smith (40.4%ESPN, 33.8%MFL, 16%CBS, 7%Yahoo) – Jahvid Best had 17 touches in Sundays game as opposed to Smith’s 7 but it is a sign of things to come. Head Coach Jim Schwartz said after Sunday’s game that Smith would continue to get carries going forward in effort to keep Best fresh. Smith was a pretty good flex week in and out the last two seasons’ until his leg injury last year. He has some talent and is a great pass catcher out of the back field and all Best owners need to own this guy. Smith is also ownable if you’re looking for some RB depth or in deeper leagues as he would be the main beneficiary should Best miss any time.

WR’s

Brandon LaFell (0.1%ESPN, 11.4%MFL, 2%CBS, 2%Yahoo)- LaFell is going to be the guy for at least this week in Carolina with Steve Smith’s injury. He has the size and the hands to be a quality receiver and is definitely ownable in deeper leagues. David Gettis will get the start opposite LaFell. Two rookie receivers along with a rookie RB could be a recipe for disaster, but Claussen will have to throw the ball to somebody, why not LaFell. He has struggled early on this season but better times are ahead and if you have a roster spot why not take a shot, you never know.

Harry Douglas (0.2%ESPN, 5.1%MFL, 1%CBS, 1%Yahoo) – Douglas finally got going this week making 3 receptions on eight targets for 59 yards and a TD. He’s a tough nifty kid who can make the run after the catch. He’s a guy they’ve liked in Atlanta for a few years now and he appears to finally be healthy and take that number two receiver job and run with it. In deeper leagues or if your receiver starved take a shot on this kid, he could pay off big time especially in PPR leagues opposite of Roddy White, who has been waiting for a legit threat alongside him for god knows how long now. Douglas could be it.

Roy E. Williams (25.2%ESPN, 55.9%MFL, 59%CBS, 44%Yahoo)- Roy Williams had a big week way back in week three against the Texans going off for 117 yards and 2 TD. I know It was against the worst pass defense in the league but you have to look deeper than that. He was running nice clean routes, fighting off defenders, beating DB’s down the field. Williams just looked like the guy who broke into the league with the Lions and the guy Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones traded for. The Cowboys are a pass first team, so there will be plenty of targets to go around. Williams should be a decent flex play every week going forward.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh (21.4%ESPN, 63.1%MFL, 66%CBS, 43%Yahoo)- Who would have thought 2-3 years ago that Roy Williams and T.J. Housh would ever end up in a waiver add article, certainly not this guy. It is 2010 now and both of these guys are thought to be past their primes and I wouldn’t disagree with that. However, they still have talent and are on very good offenses so they still can bring your team a lot of value, if for nothing else to add depth to your receiving corp. T.J. finally was involved yesterday which means that Flacco trusts him more and that Housh has finally learned the playbook. Flacco trusted him so much that he looked his way and fired the game winning 18 yard touchdown pass to him with 18 seconds left on the clock. Housh finished with 3 catches for 49 yards and a score and was targeted six times as well. Go out and grab T.J. in all leagues for some depth as he could have some big games going forward.

Steven Johnson (0.3%ESPN, 4.3%MFL, 1%CBS, 2%Yahoo)- Johnson, during QB Ryan Fitzpatrick’s two starts now appears to be his favorite red zone target as he caught a TD each of the last two weeks. Nobody on this Bills offense deserves to see any owners starting lineup any time soon, and Lee Evans is no doubt their most talented receiver, but right now it appears Johnson has some potential for some solid games as the season goes along. He’s not quite a roster worthy in 10 or 12 team leagues, but in 14 team or deeper, he’s definitely worth a look.

TE’s

Joel Dreessen (0.2%ESPN, 0.4%MFL, 0.1%CBS, 0%Yahoo)- Now you know a guy comes from obscurity when you see in parentheses here that he’s less than 1% owned in even MFL leagues (MFL site consists of many deeper and dynasty leagues) but Joel went off this weekend in Oakland for 73 yards on five catches and a TD. He was targeted often (eight times) by Matt Schaub and with Jacoby Jones and Andre Johnson’s status up in the air for week 5 against the Giants, Dreessen would probably get a similar amount of looks and could make a decent matchup play if your TE is either struggling or in their bye week. Dreessen’s got good size (6’4) and great hands so he definitely has some potential going forward especially with Owen Daniels recent injury history. Keep your eye out for this guy and follow my advice earlier of taking a look for week 5.

Brandon Pettigrew (2.6%ESPN, 24.8%MFL, 12%CBS, 6%Yahoo) – I talked about grabbing Pettigrew a few weeks back and he has continued to produce. He has averaged 15.3 pts over the last few weeks. Its time to jump on the bandwagon here and ride this hot streak as long as possible. Once Stafford comes back, its likely he won’t be quite as valuable as Stafford has a big arm and will try and get the ball down the field much more than Shaun Hill has. Tony Scheffler is someone else you want to look at long term, as his value is much higher with Stafford under center. Pettigrew has had a tendency to drop a few balls, as he did drop a potential TD pass in the end zone, but still had eight catches for 91 yards.

Player Updates Friday, 9/24

Today is a big day for injured players to practice, and if they don’t or are limited Friday’s, usually they are not expected to play the upcoming Sunday. Here is a list of some players and their injury status.

The Denver Broncos have just announced that RB Knowshon Moreno will be out this week due to an undisclosed injury. This is an odd turn of events, but Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney should split carries against the Colts. Buckhalter is probably a better option to have more yards, but Maroney should see the goal line carries and is a average play in TD heavy leagues. Get Moreno out of lineups and find another option. UPDATE: It appears Moreno reaggravated his hamstring in practice and that is the reason he will be inactive Sunday. SOURCE: Jay Glazer on Twitter

Cadillac Williams, Tampa RB was at practice today, and looks to be in good shape for Sunday’s home game against Pittsburgh. He’s not a very good option however against the stout Steeler defense. Explore other options if their available. SOURCE: Rick Stroud on Twitter

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells worked out in pads today for the first time in weeks and appears to be a go for Sunday. SOURCE: Kent Somers on Twitter

Giants C Shaun O’Hara didn’t practice once again Friday(ankle/achilles) and is listed as doubtful for Sunday against the Titans. Adam Koets will make the start for the G-Men.Source: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Giants DE Justin Tuck is listed as questionable as well for Sunday after waking up with a sore shoulder. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said he hopes it isn’t an issue but its sounding more and more like he will be limited at best this weekend. SOURCE: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Jets C Nick Mangold returned to practice Friday after missing two days due to injury. He is expected to play Sunday in Miami. He is very important for the that run game to succeed against the Dolphin run defense.

Raiders RB Michael Bush is expected to make his debut Sunday against the Cardinals, but according to sources, Darren McFadden will remain the lead back for now at least. Bush is a average flex play this week, you should take a wait and see approach with Bush before inserting him into your lineup. SOURCE: Oakland Tribune

The report about Cleveland RB Jerome Harrison is a bleak one, he will not practice today and is doubtful to play Sunday against the Ravens. He’s not a guy you should be starting anyway against Baltimore, especially since he is in a committee with Peyton Hillis and 2nd year back James Davis is also expected to steal some carries. SOURCE: Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter

Colts RB Joseph Addai returned to practice, although in limited fashion Thursday. It remains to be seen if he’ll practice today with the knee injury he suffered Sunday, the same knee he had surgically repaired in the offseason. If Addai sits, Donald Brown will get the bulk of the carries and is a very good low end RB2 and flex play against Denver.  UPDATE: According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen Addai is good to go Sunday and will start against denver. SOURCE: Lindsay Jones on Twitter

In other Colts news, WR Pierre Garcon, who has struggled so far in 2010, has been downgraded to doubtful after sitting out practice Thursday with a hamstring injury. With his recent struggles, you should be looking elsewhere for a WR3 or flex, but with this news he obviously should be taken out of lineups.

Falcon RB Michael Turner was upgraded to a full participant during yesterday’s practice and is going to start Sunday in New Orleans. Get him into your lineup, he could have a good day, as Frank Gore posted big numbers against this defense Monday night. SOURCE: D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter

The San Diego Union-Tribune has confirmed that San Diego RB Ryan Mathews is certain to sit out Sunday’s road game at Seattle. The Chargers would be foolish to play him and risk him missing extended time. Mike Tolbert will shoulder the load with Darren Sproles playing third downs as a pass catcher. SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune

Redskin backup RB Keiland Williams, has impressed Coach Shanahan with his ability to pick up the offense quickly and block in pass protection, which is a rarity for a rookie. Williams, is a injury away to Clinton Portis before he has significant value, but as you should know, Portis isn’t the poster boy for staying healthy. Williams needs to be owned in all leagues right now, and even more so by Portis owners. SOURCE: CSN Washington UPDATE: Clinton Portis  was spotted icing his right wrist/forearm during the second half of week 2 and now is listed as questionable for Sunday. Keiland Williams would start in his place and could put up big numbers against the Rams. SOURCE: Ryan O’Halloran on Twitter

Ram WR Laurent Robinson is in a walking boot and is listed as doubtful for week 3. Rookie Mardy Gilyard, who the Rams have already said will see the field more often this week, now gets an upgrade and could break through for a long TD with his speed and quickness. Robinson should obviously be on benches this week. Gilyard is a risky play, but someone to look out for going forward.

Last Minute Player Updates 9/19

By Mike Cannici

Arizona RB Beanie Wells is inactive today, so get him out of your lineups.

Brandon LaFell, Panther WR is inactive today.

Tampa TE Kellen Winslow is active today against the Panthers and is a decent play this week.

QB Jake Delhomme as expected is inactive today, Seneca Wallace will start in his place.

Donavan McNabb is starting today and practiced fully all week even though he was listed as questionable all week. He’s a decent play today against the Texans.

Falcon WR Michael Jenkins is out once again with shoulder injury, Harry Douglas will start once again in his place.

Panther QB Matt Moore will start this week and seems fine after his concussion, we’ll see how he bounces back today.

Oft-injured Raven TE Todd Heap, is active today but should be on benches as he may be limited.

Broncos WR’s Eddie Royal and rookie DeMaryius Thomas are expected to play today. This will be Thomas’s debut, I wouldn’t start him just yet but watch out for him and see how he responds off that foot injury. Royal is a good play especially in PPR leagues.

Raiders RB Michael Bush is still a game time decision but isn’t expected to play. Keep him on your bench again this week.

Rams RB Steven Jackson(knee) and WR Laurent Robinson(ankle) are both active today. Jackson is a must start but i’d sit Robinson as he will be matched up against Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha.

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks  (ankle) who was limited in practice most of the week, is expected to play tonight against the Colts and is a must start. TE Kevin Boss is out with concussion, Travis Beckum will start, but shouldn’t be in lineups.

Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez is out today, surprising, and Austin Collie will take his place in the slot and is a great play in PPR leagues.

Enjoy the games today, unfortunately, i will miss the early games as I have a softball double header. Good luck and we’ll see you tomorrow with week 2 game recaps.

9/18 Player Updates

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks and DE Osi Umenyiora have both made the flight to Indy and although listed as questionable are expected to play. Nicks is a must play in what should be a shootout between the Manning brothers.  SOURCE: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Cowboys LB/DE DeMarcus Ware is expected to play after leaving last Sunday nights game with a neck injury. Get him in your lineups in IDP leagues.

Rams RB Steven Jackson practiced fully both Thursday and Friday and is fully expected to play Sunday against Oakland and is an obvious start @ Oakland.

Vikings WR Percy Harvin (hip) is fully expected to play and have a big role Sunday at home against Miami. SOURCE: Steve Wyche NFL Network

Oakland RB Michael Bush is not expected to play (thumb) in Sunday’s game against the Rams. He was extremely limited in practice Thursday and Friday and McFadden is a solid RB2/Flex play at home against St. Louis. SOURCE: Vittorio Tafur on Twitter

Darrelle Revis, Jets CB is expected to play Sunday against division rival New England. He was limited in practice the last few days with a hamstring injury, but should be a go and be lined across from Randy Moss most of the game. SOURCE: Manish Mehta on Twitter

Bronco WR Eddie Royal is listed as probable for Sunday with a thigh injury. He has a solid matchup, especially being the slot receiver and should put up solid numbers again, especially in PPR leagues.

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells was extremely limited in practice Friday and is considered a game time decision. If you have other options, use them as it is very unlikely Wells will play. SOURCE: Darren Urban on Twitter

Start Em’ Sit Em’ Week 2

By Mike Cannici

Start Em’/Sit Em’ for Week 2

This is a list of guys who obviously aren’t no brainer, every week starters. These are guys on the cusp, who have the talent to crack your starting lineup but just aren’t there yet. This week there are a few exceptions, but for the most part that is who this article will be focused on. Steve and I will both be contributing to this article weekly so you can get a taste for both our opinions and knowledge. At the end of the day though, its ultimately your team. As I always say when all else fails, go with your gut and that’s what I try to do because your gut is almost never wrong.

START

QB’s

Michael Vick PHI vs. Detroit- Kolb is out with a concussion and Vick is a must play vs. the weak Lions secondary. The Lions were pretty solid against the run last week against the Bears but gave up almost 400 yards passing to Jay Cutler. Vick won’t throw for 400 yards but 300 total(rushing/passing) yards and 2 scores is definitely in the cards. Start Vick with confidence this week.

Matt Ryan ATL vs. Arizona- Ryan struggled last week, but take that with a grain of salt since it was against the Steelers. Rookie Sam Bradford threw for 252 yards against that Cardinal secondary. Matt Ryan and Roddy White should be in for big days especially at home in the dome.

RB’s

Jonathan Stewart Car vs. TB- Stewart was limited week 1, more or less because he didn’t play a single snap in preseason and just wasn’t fully ready. I think things get back to normal this week during the Panthers home opener and Stewart and DeAngelo Williams lean back towards a split in touches. Stewart and Williams have coexisted together for two seasons now and been solid fantasy starters. This should be the last week you see him in this column because he’s in for a big day along with his counterpart.

Brandon Jacobs Giants vs. Indy- Jacobs is a guy who is probably on the bench in most leagues, but if you have a questionable #2 or flex, you may want to start him this week against the terrible run defense of the Colts. Bob Sanders is once again done for the year with an injury and without him there run defense is putrid. Jacobs should see 70 yards and a TD this week so plug him in.

Michael Bush/Darren McFadden OAK vs STL- Bush practiced Wednesday fully and once again expected to play. McFadden looked very good last week against the Titans even though I didn’t foresee that happening but you can’t always be right in this business. They are both excellent plays this week, with McFadden being the better PPR play and Bush the better standard scoring/TD heavy play.

WR’s

Mike Williams TB vs. Car- Williams had a solid rookie performance that saw 9 targets while catching 5 of them for 30 yards a TD. Williams seems to be QB Josh Freeman’s go to guy and with what we saw Hakeem Nicks do last week against Carolina, Williams could be in for a big day as well. After Carolina’s secondary ruined my sit em’ for Nicks, I can’t recommend sitting another receiver against them, I just can’t. Williams is a solid #3WR this week or flex.

Mohammad Massaquoi CLE vs. KC- Massaquoi had a decent week 1 performance, with 6 targets along with 2 catches for 46 yards and TD. It looks like Seneca Wallace will be the QB this week and MM looks like he should see similar targets, hopefully catching a few more them this time. He is the go to receiver in Cleveland and could have a good game. The Chiefs defense was good last Monday night; they did allow Rivers to throw for 298 yards. Wallace is by no means Phillip Rivers, but does have a good arm and is able to move around the pocket to find the open man. MM as I’ll call Massaquoi from now on is a solid flex play this week.

Legedu Naanee SD vs. Jax- Naanee had a very solid week with 9 targets. He caught 5 of those for 110yds and a score.  Now some say that score was a fluke, but hey all that matters in fantasy is getting yards and the scores so no worries, that could happen again too or against anybody. Naanee should have another big week at home against the jaguars corner’s after they allowed Kyle Orton to throw for 295 yards. Naanee is one my breakout players this year and should be inserted into your lineup this week if you missed the boat last.

SIT

QB’s

Chad Henne MIA vs. Minn- The Vikings are back home and are not too happy about the close loss against New Orleans to open the season. It’s not that I trust the Viking defensive backfield as much as I trust Jared Allen and the Williams wall to come after Henne constantly. If you own Henne in a committee, start the other guy because this will not be Henne’s week, especially the way he performed against a much lesser opponent in the Bills week 1.

Sam Bradford STL vs. Oak- The rookie looked pretty good against the Cards in week 1, but is going into a different atmosphere called the Oakland Coliseum this week. The raiders are coming off a shellacking in Tennessee, but they were run on, not passed on. Bradford is going to be a very good QB in this league for a long time, but if you own him, you don’t want him in your lineup regularly just yet. He still has some growing pains to endure, but dynasty leaguers hold on to this guy for obvious reasons.

RB’s

CJ Spiller BUF vs. GB- This young man has a load of talent, but if you have another viable option, bench Spiller this week against GB. In a PPR league you may want to keep him active, as they should be behind early and often and Edwards may use him as a check down. Standard leaguers should leave him on their bench this week at Green Bay who has a very good run defense. Spiller, like Bradford will be a very good player in this league, but the key to fantasy is to know when to start them and know when to sit them, and folks, this is one of those weeks.

Beanie Wells AZ vs. ATL- Wells is expected to play this week, but is not a good start vs. the Falcons run defense. Yes they allowed 120 yards to Rashard Mendenhall but 50 of those were in overtime on one play. Wells isn’t completely healthy yet and is not a recommended start. Keep him on your bench for at least one more week if possible.

Fred Taylor NE vs. NYJ- Taylor is not a guy who is owned in a lot of leagues, and really shouldn’t be trusted this week against the Jets defense. The Jets, without DT Kris Jenkins for most of the game, and now for the year shut down one of the top backs in the league in Ray Rice.  Fred Taylor will do his best to find some wholes but doubt he’ll find any. As I said, you won’t find him on many rosters, but I do own him in two leagues, because he is STARTING RB in the NFL. However, you won’t find him in any of my starting lineups this week. Don’t drop him if you’re an owner, but leave him riding the bench week 2.

WR’s

Randy Moss NE vs. NYJ- Your eyes aren’t deceiving you and this isn’t the Randy Moss from NFL network, the real Moss I’m talking about. With all this back and forth smack talk between Moss and Revis, I don’t foresee the same thing that happened last week where Revis isn’t blanketing the opponents best receiver. There are reports that Revis is dealing with a little hamstring discomfort, so obviously if he was to not play, Moss goes into lineups immediately. As of now though I’m not reading too much into it. Last year in two contests against New York, Moss finished with 9 catches for 58 yards and a TD. That TD however didn’t come with Revis on Moss. The Jets have already said that Revis will follow Moss all day and I’m telling you, you should have another option this week. He is one of the 5 best WR’s in the game, but the way Revis plays, Moss won’t have that kind of day this coming Sunday. BENCH HIM!!!!

Mike Williams SEA vs. Den- Both Mike Williams are in this article, but this is not the one you want to start this week. Last week he had a solid game, (4catches 64 yards) but is now dealing with a thigh injury, and better yet, if he were to play, he’d be matched up against Champ Bailey. Any doubters in Champ Bailey look how many yards his receiver Mike Sims-Walker had last week, ZERO. Make sure you bench the right Mike Williams, because I don’t want to hear it Monday morning.

TJ Houshmanzadeh BAL vs. Cin- Housh saw just 4 targets in his debut against the Jets, and I don’t see that increasing much just yet. Cincy regardless of what happened last week, is very solid against the pass. The one thing he may have working in his favor however, is that this game is against his old team so he may come out trying to prove something. This is a dicey one, but if you have better options wait an extra week before starting TJ.

Any other questions or issues you are having with your team don’t hesitate to email us @ mtcannici@gmail.com or stevedeangelo@gmail.com and we’ll help you out with all your lineup decisions.
