Week 6 Start Em Sit Em Report

By Mike Cannici

STARTS

QB

Ben Roethlisberger vs. CLE – Big Ben makes his season debut Sunday at home against the Browns. He’ll want to remind the league of what the Steelers do best—make big plays. His return will open up the run even more for RB Rashard Mendenhall and make WRs Hines Ward and especially Mike Wallace more valuable. If you’re in need of a receiver try and make a deal for Wallace ASAP because his value will skyrocket with Roethlisberger’s return. TE Heath Miller also stands to gain a lot of value. Cleveland ranks 18th against the pass so Big Ben should be in for a big day.

Eli Manning vs. DET – Eli has committed his fair share of turnovers this season, with an 8:8 TD:INT ratio, but that should start to slow down this week. The Lions currently rank 24th against the pass, meaning Manning is in for a big day, along with WRs Steve Smith and his new favorite target Hakeem Nicks.

Vince Young @ JAC – Young has not put up huge fantasy numbers this year, or even hit the 200 yard passing mark. However, if there’s a game for him to do it, it’s this Monday night against the Jags. The Jags rank 29th against the pass and WR Kenny Britt seems to be slowly developing as Young’s favorite target, specifically in the red zone. Look for Young to throw for 220 yards, 2TD and chip in with about 30 yards on the ground and maybe even a rushing score. He’s a fine matchup play this week and a must start in 2QB leagues.

Matt Cassel @ HOU – Matt Cassel has been less than spectacular this season, but draws his most favorable matchup of the 2010 season as the Chiefs travel to Houston to face the league’s worst pass defense. Cassel should finally put up some big numbers and is a decent matchup play if your guy is on a bye or injured.

RB

Ryan Mathews/Mike Tolbert @ STL – The Rams are coming off a terrible defeat at the hands of the Lions last Sunday and haven’t been too solid against the run. The Chargers just lost for the first time in the last 14 meetings to the Raiders and are going to want to ram it down St. Louis’ throats this week. Mathews is slowly being worked back into the starting role, but is at least one week away from fully regaining the job. Mike Tolbert has been solid as well and I expect the two to share carries once again. They both make for fine flex starters this week.

Marshawn Lynch @ CHI – Lynch was finally traded away from Buffalo to Seattle and Coach Pete Carroll stated that Lynch will take on a significant role Sunday. The Bears currently rank 3rd against the run, but I have a feeling Lynch will show flashes of what many thought he would be a few years back. He’s a very good flex play this week with RB2 upside.

Ryan Torain vs. IND – Torain is now the guy in Washington after the Clinton Portis injury, and if he can stay healthy, he’s in for a very productive season. He has a great matchup Sunday night against the 29th ranked run defense and is a must start in all leagues. The Colts are giving up an average of 142 yards per game on the ground and Torain could very easily top 100 yards with a TD or two.

WR

Johnny Knox vs. SEA – Knox has been nonexistent the last two weeks, albeit in tough matchups. Two weeks ago the Giants were instantly on top of Jay Cutler and last week he had journeyman Todd Collins throwing him the ball. The Seahawks rank second to last in the NFL against the pass and Jay Cutler is going to want to make a statement this week. Knox is in for a big day.

Kenny Britt @ JAC – As I mentioned in the Vince Young blurb, Britt is becoming Young’s go to guy in the red zone and that should continue as the season goes on. The Jags are terrible against the pass and Britt is a superior athlete who finally seems to have his head on straight. Britt will only get better as the season goes on and is a solid WR3 this week, with tremendous upside going forward.

Dwayne Bowe @ HOU – Bowe has been held in check so far this season for two reasons:  one, he’s had Matt Cassel as his QB and two, he has dropped his fair share of balls including what would have been a TD pass last week in Indianapolis. He has been targeted 23 times through four weeks though so the balls are coming his way. He gets the worst pass defense in the NFL this week and could be in for his biggest day of the year. He’s a great flex play with WR3 upside this week.

Pierre Garcon @ WAS – Garcon finally returned last week after missing the previous three with a hamstring injury. In Week 5, he had 6 catches for 57 yards on 14 targets, meaning Manning was looking for him right away in his first game back. This week he draws the Redskins 30th ranked pass defense and should see the same amount of targets. Add in a TD reception and maybe a few more catches with another week of practice for him and Peyton to get back on the same page. Garcon is a good flex play going forward with huge upside.

SITS

QB

Shaun Hill @ NYG –Yes Hill has been great recently against subpar defenses, but this Sunday he gets the Giant’s number one ranked pass defense at the New Meadowlands Stadium. I’m not saying Hill will have a total stinker, but there are better options out there in a tough road matchup for him and the Lions.  Calvin Johnson may not be able to go with a shoulder injury, making Hill a starter in 2QB leagues at best this week.

David Garrard vs. TEN – Those of you who bought into the hype after the last two weeks, are going to see Garrard come crashing back down to earth at home against the Titans. He’s another QB, like Hill, who won’t have a total meltdown but you should have better options this week. If for some reason he is your best option then take the plunge, but I don’t see him surpassing more than 10-12 fantasy points.

RB

Peyton Hillis @ PIT –Hillis has arguably been the fantasy MVP thus far in 2010 but he draws the leagues number one rush defense this week, allowing a miniscule 62 yards per game rushing. With rookie Colt McCoy making his first career start, Hillis is safe only in PPR leagues because of the probability of check-down catches. It doesn’t help that he still seems to be suffering from a thigh injury that may be slowing him down. Hillis does have a very easy run schedule going forward. He only faces two more defenses ranked in the top 10 against the run:  the Jets in week 9 and the Steelers again in week 17, when your fantasy playoffs will most likely be decided.

Knowshon Moreno/Laurence Maroney/Correll Buckhalter vs. NYJ– Moreno is still nursing that hamstring injury and his status for Sunday against the Jets is still unknown. Maroney and Buckhalter have basically been non-factors as QB Kyle Orton has been airing it out play after play. These two might get some more chances to run if they could ever get positive yards on their carries.  Combined the last two weeks against Tennessee and Baltimore they have 28 carries for 48 yards, or less than 2 yards per carry.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis vs. BAL – B-G, as I like to call him, has been solid in his last two games, but has a tough matchup at home vs. the 10th ranked run defense in the Baltimore Ravens. The last two weeks the Ravens seem to have tightened up their run defense, allowing only 123 yards on the ground combined. B-G is no stud back, so if you have another option this week, keep him on your bench.

WR

Mario Manningham vs. DET – By no means does this have anything to do with the Lions defense, but more about the inability of Eli Manning to target Manningham lately. After being targeted 19 times with 14 receptions the first three weeks, he’s only been targeted 3 times and held without a catch in the previous two. He was a guy I liked a lot coming into the season, but until he shows a little more consistency he can’t be trusted on a week to week basis. I wouldn’t drop him just yet but he needs to be on benches until further notice.

Mike Sims-Walker vs. TEN – The Titans early in the season were ranked number one against the pass and are now ranked in the bottom third in the league. However, if you look closely at the stats, Sims-Walker has been completely nonexistent at home. In three homes games this year against fairly mediocre pass defenses, he has been shut out twice and the other game had 2 catches for 34 yards. He is one of the most talented receivers in the league, but is also one of the least consistent and his QB certainly doesn’t help. In good road matchups, he’s a solid start, but until he shows more consistency, leave him on your bench if your receiver depth allows for it.

Nate Burleson @NYG- Burleson is a guy I mentioned in this week’s waiver wire adds, but he’s not a good play this week unless Calvin Johnson sits. The Giants rank first in the league against the pass and if Megatron plays there’s only going to be room for one guy. Burleson is a good receiver but without Johnson, the Giants will just double team Burleson all day and he’s not the type of player to beat double coverage. If Johnson sits, then Nate becomes an average flex play this week.

Start Em Sit Em WEEK 4 Edition

By Mike Cannici

Start Em

QB’s

Matt Ryan vs SF- Ryan is coming off a huge road win against the defending champs and division rival Saints. A knock on Matty “Ice” throughout his short career was that he didn’t play well on the road in big games but last week he answered that question with a 19-30 228yard and 2TD performance without a turnover. This week he draws the 49ers at home, which just got smacked around by Kansas City last week. San Fran has the 16th ranked pass defense and Matt Cassel threw for 250 yards and 3 scores against them. Start Matt Ryan this week, I promise it’ll be worth it.

Kyle Orton @TEN- Orton has now thrown for 295, 307 and 476 yards respectively through first 3 weeks of the season. He’s spreading the ball around and making all of his receiver’s fantasy relevant. The Titans coming into last Sunday’s contest against the Giants had ranked first against the pass, but allowed 386 yards through the air to Eli and the Giants.

Mark Sanchez @ BUF- Jets QB has produced two straight quality outings against division rivals and it should continue this week against the 18th ranked pass defense of the Bills.

RB’s

Peyton Hillis vs CIN- Hillis exploded for 144 yards and a TD last week against the normally stout Baltimore run defense. Hillis appears to be the “guy” now in that Browns backfield and as a great matchup at home against the Bengals. The Bengals are allowing 104ypg on the ground and their run defense is not nearly as good as the Ravens and Hillis was able to expose them. Hillis makes for a great flex play in week 4.

Ronnie Brown vs NE- Brown didn’t have his best game during week 3(11rush-54yds) but that was against the Jets front seven and he should have a lot more success at home against the Patriots. The Pats are a currently ranked 20th against the run (119ypg) and this makes for an ideal matchup for Brown and even Ricky Williams for that matter. Brown is definitely the safer play however.

Beanie Wells @ SD- Wells made his 2010 debut last week against the Raiders and rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries. He is a great start this week and appears to be back to full strength. Get him in your lineup as he could go off this week. San Diego has held up pretty well against the run since opening night in KC, but Maurice Jones-Drew was held in check for the most part because they were getting blown out and Justin Forsett and the Seahawks just aren’t the ground and pound team that the Cardinals are. Wells is safe to get back into all lineups.

WR’s

Louis Murphy vs HOU- This game can go one of two ways and regardless, Murphy will get his yards as Houston is horrific against the pass allowing a league worst 368.7 ypg. That number would be even higher had they not been blown out basically at Dallas last week. Bruce Gradkowski is also a decent matchup play this week at QB. Murphy put up 5 catches for 119 yards against the Cardinals and should at least match that this week with a score. Get him in your lineups even though he’s yet to practice this week with a bruised clavicle, all signs are pointing towards him starting.

Lance Moore vs CAR- Moore broke out this past weekend with a six catch 149 yard and 2TD performance. Moore’s most productive season to date came back in 2008 when Reggie Bush went down for a significant amount of time. Moore had a terrible 2009 but you can blame mostly injuries on that, as he appears to now be fully healthy. Grab him and start him in all leagues this week at home against the Panthers.

Malcom Floyd/Legedu Naanee vs ARI- Both these guys saw pretty consistent targets last weekend against the Seahawks and should both be viable #3WR or flex plays this week. I had stated a few weeks back you may want to stay away from these guys until one guy emerges, but after last week it would appear Rivers will spread the ball around pretty evenly between the two and even sprinkle in Buster Davis as well. The Cards pass defense is dreadful and I can see both these guys getting in the end zone. Start them both with confidence.

Sit Em

QB’s

Joe Flacco @ PIT- Flacco finally stepped up and played very well last week, but it was against Cleveland and the Steelers have pretty much shut down everyone thus far. I don’t like Flacco’s matchup this week so hopefully you have other options to explore.

Alex Smith @ ATL- At this point Smith cannot be counted on as any more than a bye week filler. After his week 2 performance against the Saints it looked like he was beginning to turn the corner. Smith should be a decent matchup play at home, but until further notice do not start him on the road as he has been terrible in two road starts.

RB’s

MarShawn Lynch vs NYJ- Not much to say here, Lynch has been the featured back the past two weeks for the Bills and will be once again, unfortunately he has a terrible matchup against the 4th ranked Jets pass defense. Keep him on your bench until next week against the Jaguars or until he gets traded to maybe the Packers? That would be a great fit.

Darren McFadden vs HOU- RUN DMC has been great thus far as the featured back, but sadly he draws the leagues 4th ranked run defense this week. I don’t think it’ll be a total dud performance, but don’t think he’s worth starting this week except in PPR formats. If he can stay healthy he should be in for a big year but not on the ground in week 4.

Laurence Maroney @ TEN- Maroney was a hot pick up last week after it was announced Knowshon Moreno would miss a few weeks. Maroney did not look very good though last week at home against a below average Colt defense. Playing at the Titans definitely doesn’t help either and I’d avoid Maroney this week like the plague.

WR’s

Mike Wallace vs BAL- Wallace had 3 big catches last week resulting in 100yds and 2 TD. However, as suspect as people may think the Ravens secondary is, they are allowing the fewest passing yards per game and have allowed a long pass of 29yards this season. Wallace is a deep threat and if you can take that away from his, he has little to no value. Keep him on benches this week until Big Ben returns in week 6.

Derrick Mason @ PIT- Mason over the years has been a quality #2 or 3 WR but thus far Flacco and Mason have failed to get on the same page. he has just seven catches on the year and I don’t think he’s ready to get it rolling this coming Sunday in Pittsburgh. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, I believe is going to start eating into Mason’s targets. Don’t drop Mason just yet has he has been one of the most consistent receivers in the game the past 7-8 years, but leave him on your bench until he finds some continuity with his QB.

Nate Washington vs DEN- Washington had only 3 catches for 30 yds last week during their victory of the Giants, and have a tough matchup against Champ Bailey this week. Vince Young isn’t exactly lighting it up through the air and this team’s pace and tempo is determined by Chris Johnson. Kenny Britt is a possibility to break one deep or get a red zone target but Washington should be left on the bench in all leagues this week.

Those are my start em sit em’s for Week 4. Any questions concerning your particular team feel free to send me an email to mtcannici@gmail.com and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Player Updates Friday, 9/24

Today is a big day for injured players to practice, and if they don’t or are limited Friday’s, usually they are not expected to play the upcoming Sunday. Here is a list of some players and their injury status.

The Denver Broncos have just announced that RB Knowshon Moreno will be out this week due to an undisclosed injury. This is an odd turn of events, but Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney should split carries against the Colts. Buckhalter is probably a better option to have more yards, but Maroney should see the goal line carries and is a average play in TD heavy leagues. Get Moreno out of lineups and find another option. UPDATE: It appears Moreno reaggravated his hamstring in practice and that is the reason he will be inactive Sunday. SOURCE: Jay Glazer on Twitter

Cadillac Williams, Tampa RB was at practice today, and looks to be in good shape for Sunday’s home game against Pittsburgh. He’s not a very good option however against the stout Steeler defense. Explore other options if their available. SOURCE: Rick Stroud on Twitter

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells worked out in pads today for the first time in weeks and appears to be a go for Sunday. SOURCE: Kent Somers on Twitter

Giants C Shaun O’Hara didn’t practice once again Friday(ankle/achilles) and is listed as doubtful for Sunday against the Titans. Adam Koets will make the start for the G-Men.Source: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Giants DE Justin Tuck is listed as questionable as well for Sunday after waking up with a sore shoulder. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said he hopes it isn’t an issue but its sounding more and more like he will be limited at best this weekend. SOURCE: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Jets C Nick Mangold returned to practice Friday after missing two days due to injury. He is expected to play Sunday in Miami. He is very important for the that run game to succeed against the Dolphin run defense.

Raiders RB Michael Bush is expected to make his debut Sunday against the Cardinals, but according to sources, Darren McFadden will remain the lead back for now at least. Bush is a average flex play this week, you should take a wait and see approach with Bush before inserting him into your lineup. SOURCE: Oakland Tribune

The report about Cleveland RB Jerome Harrison is a bleak one, he will not practice today and is doubtful to play Sunday against the Ravens. He’s not a guy you should be starting anyway against Baltimore, especially since he is in a committee with Peyton Hillis and 2nd year back James Davis is also expected to steal some carries. SOURCE: Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter

Colts RB Joseph Addai returned to practice, although in limited fashion Thursday. It remains to be seen if he’ll practice today with the knee injury he suffered Sunday, the same knee he had surgically repaired in the offseason. If Addai sits, Donald Brown will get the bulk of the carries and is a very good low end RB2 and flex play against Denver.  UPDATE: According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen Addai is good to go Sunday and will start against denver. SOURCE: Lindsay Jones on Twitter

In other Colts news, WR Pierre Garcon, who has struggled so far in 2010, has been downgraded to doubtful after sitting out practice Thursday with a hamstring injury. With his recent struggles, you should be looking elsewhere for a WR3 or flex, but with this news he obviously should be taken out of lineups.

Falcon RB Michael Turner was upgraded to a full participant during yesterday’s practice and is going to start Sunday in New Orleans. Get him into your lineup, he could have a good day, as Frank Gore posted big numbers against this defense Monday night. SOURCE: D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter

The San Diego Union-Tribune has confirmed that San Diego RB Ryan Mathews is certain to sit out Sunday’s road game at Seattle. The Chargers would be foolish to play him and risk him missing extended time. Mike Tolbert will shoulder the load with Darren Sproles playing third downs as a pass catcher. SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune

Redskin backup RB Keiland Williams, has impressed Coach Shanahan with his ability to pick up the offense quickly and block in pass protection, which is a rarity for a rookie. Williams, is a injury away to Clinton Portis before he has significant value, but as you should know, Portis isn’t the poster boy for staying healthy. Williams needs to be owned in all leagues right now, and even more so by Portis owners. SOURCE: CSN Washington UPDATE: Clinton Portis  was spotted icing his right wrist/forearm during the second half of week 2 and now is listed as questionable for Sunday. Keiland Williams would start in his place and could put up big numbers against the Rams. SOURCE: Ryan O’Halloran on Twitter

Ram WR Laurent Robinson is in a walking boot and is listed as doubtful for week 3. Rookie Mardy Gilyard, who the Rams have already said will see the field more often this week, now gets an upgrade and could break through for a long TD with his speed and quickness. Robinson should obviously be on benches this week. Gilyard is a risky play, but someone to look out for going forward.
