Fantasy Savvy Player Rankings- Week 9

By Mike Cannici (QB’s, WR’s) and Steve DeAngelo (RB’s, TE’s)

QB’s

1.    Phillip Rivers @ HOU
2.    Peyton Manning @ PHI
3.    Drew Brees @ CAR
4.    Aaron Rodgers vs. DAL
5.    Tom Brady @ CLE
6.    Ben Roethlisberger @ CIN- Should bounce back after a lackluster performance last wk against the Saints.
7.    Eli Manning @ SEA- It’ll be tough in Seattle against the 12th man, but the Hawks’ can be passed on and Eli will get it done.
8.    Mike Vick vs. IND- Vick’s first game back, he’ll be just fine and maybe even pick up a rushing score.
9.   Matt Ryan vs. TB
10.    Matt Schaub vs. SD- Tough matchup against the league’s best pass D, but Schaub is at home and will still put up QB1 numbers.
11.    Joe Flacco vs. MIA
12.    Brett Favre vs. ARI
13.    Jay Cutler @ BUF
14.    Mark Sanchez @ DET- The Lions are much improved, but can still be scored on and Sanchez should have a solid game.
15.    Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. CHI
16.    Carson Palmer vs. PIT
17.    Josh Freeman @ ATL-Good matchup against the secondary that is susceptible to the big play.
18.    Matthew Stafford vs. NYJ- This kid is going to be a star and soon, but not this week in a tough matchup at home vs. the Jets.
19.    Matt Cassel @ OAK- The Raiders have been great lately, outscoring their opponents the last two weeks but a total of 92-17. They may be without Asomugha which could mean another decent day for Cassel.
20.    Jon Kitna @ GB
21.    Jason Campbell vs. KC
22.    Chad Henne @ BAL
23.    Colt McCoy vs. NE
24.    Matt Moore vs. NO
25.    Charlie Whitehurst vs. NYG-Hasselback isn’t going to play and we’ll finally get to see what Whitehurst has against one of the league’s best defenses.
26.    Derek Anderson @ MIN

RB’s

1. Adrian Peterson vs Arizona- Moss gone, Harvin banged up, great matchup all means tons of work for Peterson as Childress tries to save his job, Peterson could see 35 touches.

2. Jamaal Charles @ Oakland- I’m expecting Charles to build on his season high 240 total yard effort last week  as the Chiefs will run heavily in this and Charles leads the way.

3. Michael Turner vs TB- Fresh off the bye, Turner is rested and ready to go off against TB and their weak Run D

3A. Arian Foster vs San Diego- Foster will be effective against San Diego and their #1 Rush D, his O-line is one of the best in the league when it comes to run blocking.

4. Ray Rice vs Miami- Rice needed the bye week, he’s ready for a big role against Miami

5. Lesean Mcoy vs Indy- Will continue to be a factor in the pass and run game and will rack up over 100 total yards.

6. Ahmad Bradshaw @ Seattle- Seattle’s run D has taken a bit of a backseat of late and is banged up, Expect the Giants to pound the ball early and often.

7. Rashad Mendenhall @ Cincy- Cincy’s Run D has been getting burnt lately, but expect them to play more inspired on Monday night. Mendenhall should still find his way into the endzone once or twice.

8. Matt Forte vs Buffalo- Here’s hoping Martz isn’t as stubborn as I think he is and actually puts the ball in Forte’s hands this week against Buffalo and their dead last Run D.

9. Darren Mcfadden vs Kansas City- With Zach Miller doubtful for this game, Louis Murphy out, K.C. will stack the box. Mcfadden still will probably go over 100+ total yards he just might not find the endzone.

10. Ladainian Tomlinson @ Detroit- Jets will get back to what they do best against Detroit and their 27th ranked Run D.

11. Peyton Hills vs NE- Hills had the bye week to rest and is healthy. He will get a gigantic workload against NE in the run game and pass game.

12. Thomas Jones @ Oakland- Chiefs will run the ball at least 35 times, so plenty of opportunity for Jones to succeed alongside Charles.

13. Legarrette Blount @ Atlanta- Is now the #1 back for TB and running well thus far.

13A Brandon Jackson vs Dallas- Running much better of late and will be playing against an uninspired defense. Should have a couple of scoring opportunities.

14. Jahvid Best vs NYJ- Not a good matchup here.

15. Felix Jones @ GB- Still the #1 Option in Dallas, but not playing well and Tashard Choice will cut into Jones time this week. Jones is better for PPR.

16. Jonathan Stewart  vs NO- Oline is not opening up any holes and Stewart has been struggling. Will get all the touches with DeAngelo Williams out again, but don’t expect a breakout for Stewart.

16A. Donald Brown @ Philly- With Addai and Mike Hart both out, Brown will get the carries, but he hasn’t been playing well.

17. Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis @ Cle- Big game last week and although he may not get a lot of yards, I think he will have a lot of opportunities to punch the ball in the endzone this week, as Brady will move the ball.

17A. Cedric Benson @ Pit- Rough matchup, but still gets all the carries. Don’t expect yards but a TD is possible.

18. Ryan Matthews @ Houston- Getting healthier , but Sproles and Tolbert are hurting his potential

18A. Bradon Jacobs @ Seattle- Good chance to find the endzone and rack up about 40-50 yards.

19. Darren Sproles @ Houston-  With Gates doubtful, Naanee, Davis and Floyd all out, Sproles will play a big role in the passing game Solid play in PPR leagues.

19A. Danny Woodhead @ Cleveland- Woodhead gets enough catches and carries to be productive as a flex.

20. Shonn Greene @ Detroit- Should get at least 10-15 carries this week, should find some room to run, but has to hit the edge and run away from Suh.

21. Beanie Wells @ Minnesota- Beanie is questionable so , but looks like he’ll play.

22. Ronnie Brown @ Baltimore- Williams and Brown continue to hurt each other

23. Ricky Williams @ Baltimore- Decent flex play

24. Marshawn Lynch vs NYG- Lynch is finding nowhere to run (2.8 ypc as a Seahawk) rough matchup against the Giants Run D.

24. Fred Jackson vs Chicago- C.J. Spiller needs to get more carries, Jackson has been getting a lot of carries but hasn’t produced, tough matchup this week.

25. Mike Tolbert @ Houston – Good chance to find the endzone.

26. Chester Taylor vs Buffalo- Should be a factor as the Bears should run the ball a lot this week

27. C.J. Spiller vs Chicago- Can’t wait to rank this guy in the Top 5, Give him the Ball BUFFALO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20 Carries!!!!!!!!

28. Michael Bush vs K.C.- Don’t see him doing much.

29. Julius Jones/Chris Ivory/Ladell Betts @ Carolina- Who knows?

30. Willis McGahee vs Miami- McGahee takes a back seat this week

31. Tashard Choice @ GB- Might get 10 touches this week as Barber could take a lesser role

32. Marion Barber @ GB

33. Justin Forsett vs NYG

34. Derek Ward vs SD

35. Cadillac Williams @ Atlanta

WR’s

1.    Roddy White vs. TB
2.    Reggie Wayne @ PHI
3.    Greg Jennings vs. DAL
4.    Hakeem Nicks @ SEA- The last time I ranked Nicks in the top five, he finished with 8 yards, won’t happen again.
5.    Miles Austin @ GB
6.    Andre Johnson vs. SD
7.    Anquan Boldin vs. MIA
8.    Calvin Johnson vs. NYJ-Tough matchup but won’t be blanketed by Revis which means he’ll break out for at least one score.
9.    Marques Colston @ CAR
10.    Desean Jackson vs. IND- If he plays (concussion) he’s definitely a top ten finisher this week with Vick back under center.
11.    Brandon Marshall @ BAL
12.    Mike Williams(TB) @ ATL
13.    Pierre Garcon @ PHI- Great matchup and is now Manning’s # 2 guy.
14.    Larry Fitzgerald @ MIN- Two touchdowns in week 8, good for at least one this week.
15.    Terrell Owens vs. PIT
16.    Jeremy Maclin vs. IND
17.    Hines Ward @ CIN
18.    Steve Smith(CAR) vs. NO
19.    Mike Wallace vs. CIN
20.    Percy Harvin vs. ARI- Great matchup if he can go (ankle) but Coach Childress not so sure now after missing practice all week. I’m still ranking him as if he’ll play.
21.    Dwayne Bowe @ OAK-Scored in three straight, no Nnamdi could mean another solid day
22.    Dez Bryant @ GB
23.    Johnny Knox @ BUF
24.    Braylon Edwards @ DET- Great matchup for him if he can only catch Sanchise’s passes.
25.    Steve Smith(NYG) @ SE
26.    Steve Johnson vs. CHI
27.    Steve Breaston @ MIN- 8-147 last week, look for around 6-100 this week, becoming solid WR 3.
28.    Wes Welker @ CLE
29.    Chad OchoCinco vs. PIT
30.    Lance Moore @ CAR
31.    Patrick Crayton @ HOU- River’s number two target after Gates against league’s worst pass defense.
32.    Santonio Holmes @ DET
33.    Davone Bess @ BAL- Could be a big time PPR guy this week catching a lot of underneath stuff from Henne against the Ravens pass rush.
34.    James Jones vs. DAL
35.    Lee Evans vs. CHI
36.    Derrick Mason vs. MIA
37.    Robert Meachem @ CAR
38.    Mike Williams(SEA) vs. NYG
39.    Nate Burleson vs. NYJ
40.    Bernard Berrian vs. ARI- Not a huge fan of the guy, but he’s the #2 now at worst and # 1 if Harvin sits.
41.    Jordy Nelson vs. DAL
42.    Roy Williams @ GB
43.    Darrius Heyward-Bey vs. KC- Had his best game of his short career last week, might be coming into his own now.
44.    Deion Branch @ CLE
45.    Michael Jenkins vs. TB
46.    Mario Manningham @ SEA
47.    Earl Bennett @ BUF
48.    Anthony Gonzalez @ PHI
49.    Jacoby Jones vs. SD
50.    Saje Arijotutu @ HOU-I’m sure you’ve never heard of him but he’s the # 2 receiver in San Diego now.
51.    Kevin Walter vs. SD
52.    Mohammed Massaquoi vs. NE
53.    Brandon LaFell vs. NO- Scored in two straight, I’m starting to like this kid opposite Smith.
54.    Devin Hester @ BUF
55.    Jericho Cotchery @ DET
56.    Brian Hartline @ BAL
57.    Deon Butler vs. NYG
58.    Josh Cribbs vs. NE
59.    Jason Avant vs. IND- Move up about 15 spots if Desean can’t go.
60.    Devery Henderson @ CAR- This guy always comes out and surprises right when you least expect it, and this week, I least expect it. Don’t take the gamble though.

A few late night updates

Redskins TE Chris Cooley (concussion) is expected to play @ Chicago so keep him in lineups.

Titans WR Kenny Britt (bar fight) will play Sunday but will not start. He’s not a great option with Kerry Collins under center so if you have other options, explore them. Justin Gage will get the start after missing two games with a thumb injury.

As expected, QB Colt McCoy will make his second consecutive start for the Browns with Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace both officially being ruled out with ankle injuries. WR Mohammed Massaquoi(concussion) has also been ruled out while Josh Cribbs(concussion) will play.

Raiders RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) is going to play but his role is not yet known.

Chargers TE Antonio Gates(toe) is expected to start but is still being called a game time decision.SOURCE: Kevin Acee on Twitter

We will have active/inactives listed tomorrow morning after they are announced sometime after 11:30 AM EST.

49ers News

WR Josh Morgan(thigh) was a full participant in Friday’s practice and is expected to play Sunday in Carolina. CB Nate Clements(ankle) is likely to miss Sunday’s game which could mean a big day for Steve Smith who himself is returning from an ankle injury. TE Vernon Davis(knee) practiced with no issues this week and will start Sunday.

Bears News

LB Lance Briggs(ankle) was able to practice Friday and is expected to start Sunday. IDP leaguers get him back into your lineups against the Redskins.

Bengals News

CB Jonathan Joseph(ankle) is questionable for Sunday’s game in Atlanta. Joseph is likely to play, however may not be 100% meaning Roddy White could have a big day.

Bills News

No Major injuries effecting your fantasy squad.

Broncos News

CB Champ Bailey(ribs) has the best chance at playing this week over the rest of the Broncos on the injury report. WR Eddie Royal(groin) participated in a limited fashion during Friday’s practice and will be a game time decision. If you have another option, use him over Royal who even if he does play won’t be 100%.

Browns News

RB Peyton Hillis(quadricep) is probable this week and should play in a pretty good matchup against the Saints. WR/KR Josh Cribbs (concussion) is expected to play Sunday. WR Mohammed Massaquoi(concussion) is listed as doubtful and likely won’t suit up against the Saints. Rookie QB Colt McCoy will get the start once again this week while QB’s Jake Delhomme(ankle) and Seneca Wallace (ankle) sit out.

Buccaneers News

RB Earnest Graham (hamstring) is questionable this week and isn’t likely to play Sunday. Cadillac Williams and LaGarette Blount are expected to shoulder the load in a good matchup against the Rams. TE Kellen Winslow(knee) practiced in full late this week and will play Sunday.

Cardinals News

WR’s Steve Breaston(knee) and Early Doucet (groin) are both being considered game time decisions. If you have other options or cannot wait until the 4pm game to make a roster decision, look elsewhere. Rookie WR Stephen Williams (back) is not likely to play Sunday and could miss some more time as he is dealing with a small fracture in his back.

Chargers News

WR’s Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee(hamstring) are both unlikely to play Sunday in what would be great matchup against the Patriots. TE Antonio Gates(toe) will be a game time decision, but many close to the Chargers believe Gates will play. RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) practiced in full Friday and will start. Mathews is a high end RB2 against the weak Pats defense.

Chiefs News

No significant Fantasy news.

Colts News

The Colts are on a bye this week, however they are just riddled with injuries. TE Dallas Clark(hand/wrist) was placed on IR ending his season. WR Austin Collie(foot) had surgery this week and will be sidelined at least two weeks. RB Joseph Addai (shoulder) is seeking a second opinion on his shoulder but sources say he will probably miss the next 4-5 weeks. There is nothing torn just some nerve damage. Donald Brown(hamstring ) would be first in line to start with Addai out but he just can’t seem to get healed up. Mike Hart would get the starting nod in Week 8 if Brown is unable to go.

Cowboys News

Dez Bryant (ribs/ankle) is fully healthy according to sources and will play Monday night against the Giants.

Dolphins News

No significant Fantasy News

Eagles News

Michael Vick(ribs) will not start Sunday but will dress and will be emergency QB. Vick is expected to return to a starting role in week 9 after next weeks bye. RB LeSean McCoy(broken rib) says his rib is not yet fully healed but has been playing through it and will continue to do so. WR Desean Jackson(concussion) will not play Sunday but will likely return week 9 after next weeks bye, as long as he passes all his tests.

Falcons News

CB Dunta Robinson(concussion) will not play Sunday. Robinson suffered to concussion on a devastating hit on Eagle receiver Desean Jackson who will not play this week either.

NY Giants News

WR Hakeem Nicks(hamstring fatigue) will play Monday against the Cowboys. Nicks said its just some fatigue and will be fine.

NY Jets News

The Jets are on a bye this week and have no significant injuries.

Jaguars News

QB David Garrard(concussion) will not play Sunday. Coach Jack Del Rio will not announce a starter until Sunday. It will be between Trent Edwards and Todd Bouman, neither of which is a viable option.

Lions News

The Lions are on a bye this week. QB Matthew Stafford(shoulder) is expected to return and start week 8. LB Zach Follett(stinger) was released from the hospital and thankfully will be ok. He layed motionless on the field during Sunday’s loss to the Giants after getting hit by DE Jason Pierre-Paul. It looked a lot worse and luckily he was not severely injured.

Packers News

WR Donald Driver(quadricep) returned to limited practice Friday and is listed as probable. Driver is very likely to play so keep him in your lineups. LB Clay Matthews(hamstring) is going to play Sunday but more than likely will only play on passing downs. If you don’t have other options, you have to start him, but if possible, bench him for this week as his total snaps will be limited.

Panthers News

WR Steve Smith(ankle) practiced in full and will start Sunday in a good matchup against the 49ers. Smith also gets Matt Moore back at QB and is a solid WR3 with WR2 upside this week.

Patriots News

RB Fred Taylor(turf toe) will be out once again this week. BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead will split the carries and both are decent flex plays this week, especially Woodhead in PPR leagues. WR Julian Edelman(concussion) was limited at practice Friday and will be a game time decision.

Raiders News

QB Jason Campbell(knee) is likely to start Sunday unless he has a setback. He was able to practice on a limited basis the last few days so he should be good to go. This brings some value back to the Raiders receivers, who would have had little to none with Kyle Boller at the helm. Bruce Gradkowski(shoulder) is still unable to go. RB Darren McFadden is listed as questionable still but Coach Tom Cable believes he will play Sunday against the Broncos. Run DMC will likely split carries with Michael Bush and both are good flex plays.

Rams News

No significant fantasy news

Ravens News

TE Todd Heap, who suffered a shoulder injury after a big hit by Patriots Safety Brandon Meriweather, is expected to play Sunday against the Bills.

Redskins News

TE Chris Cooley, who suffered a concussion Sunday night is expected to play in Chicago Sunday. Check back in tomorrow with us to make sure but he looks like a go. RB Ryan Torain(ankle) is fine and will start in a tough matchup against the Bears.

Saints News

RB Pierre Thomas(ankle) has been once again ruled out for week 7. RB Reggie Bush(leg) will not play either but is expected back for week 8.

Seahawks News

No significant fantasy news

Steelers News

RB Rashard Mendenhall(shoulder contusion) is not listed on the injury report and will start Sunday against the Dolphins. He is a low end RB1 this week.

Texans News

LB DeMeco Ryans(achilles) was placed on IR thus ending his 2010 season. LB Zac Diles is expected to fill in at MLB and could be a sleeper for tackles in IDP leagues.

Titans News

RB Chris Johnson(thigh) practiced in full Friday, and as we expected is going to start Sunday. QB Vince Young(knee/ankle) is not expected to play Sunday, meaning Kerry Collins will start. WR Kenny Britt(bar fight) is a game time decision as to whether or not coach Jeff Fischer will sit him for disciplinary reasons. Check back in tomorrow morning for an update. WR Percy Harvin(hamstring) was limited in practice Friday but is expected to play Sunday against the rival Packers. He’s a solid WR3 this week.

Evening Player News -10/21

Dallas Clark (Wrist)- Is expected to have Surgery on his wrist. He plans on meeting with the Colts on Thursday night to discuss his options, but it doesn’t look good for Clark. Some reports have said he could be out for the year. Stay Tuned. The Colts have a bye this week, but go pick up TE Jacob Tamme who will fill in Clark’s role, as we’ve seen, Manning makes everyone better.

Malcolm Floyd (hamstring)- Is out for Week 7 against the Patriots. Also Legedu Naanee hasn’t practiced all week so Patrick Crayton is looking like he will be the #1 target alongside Craig Davis who is banged up himself, but will probably play. Crayton is a nice pickup for this week against the Pats spotty Pass D.

Austin Collie (Hand)-  Had surgery on his hand today. There is no timetable for his return as of right now, but you have to figure it’s going to be at least a month.

Antonio Gates (Toe)- Is going to be a full-blown gametime decision for Sunday with his sprained Toe. Said Gates, “I’ve been in a situation where I didn’t think I’d play and then I played. And I’ve been in other situations, well, there actually haven’t been any other situations.” Stay tuned on this, but start prepping for other options just in case. Jacob Tamme, Ben Watson, Jermaine Gresham are good replacement options for this week if you need somebody off the wire. Ben Watson would be the guy I would grab.

David Garrard (Concussion)- Has not practiced all week and will be out this weekend, also Trent Edwards might not even play. Go pick up the Chiefs Defense! My Aunt Turgel will be starting for the Jags on Sunday.

Vince Young (Knee, Ankle)- Didn’t practice again Thursday, but Fischer has said he doesn’t need to practice in order to start this weekend against Philly. I expect Vince to start over Kerry this week, the Titans are just being safe with Vince.

Donald Driver (Quad)- Says he will play this week. Will see what happens, but he should be Ok. I doubt Driver will miss such a big matchup against Minnesota.

Pierre Thomas (Ankle)- Hasn’t practiced all week and is once again extremely questionable for Sunday. It looks like Chris Ivory will be the featured back once again with Ladell Betts serving on 3rd and passing downs.

Chris Cooley (Concussion)- Practiced on a limited basis today and looks to be fine for Sunday.

Darren Mcfadden- (Hammy)- Returned to practice in a limited fashion today, but is still questionable for Sunday. Stay tuned. Either way go trade Mcfadden while he still has some value left. He’s no bet to stay healthy even if he takes back the majority of the carries from Bush. Plus his schedule will not be as easy as it was before he got hurt.

Bruce Gradkowski (Shoulder)- Was limited in practice today and coach Tom Cable has not ruled him out for Sunday. I don’t think he’s gonna play this week as he was unable to throw anything downfield, he will probably be out at least one more week but stay tuned. If he’s out again downgrade Louis Murphy and Zach Miller.

Joseph Addai will go for a 2nd opinion on his shoulder injury that could keep him out several weeks. Addai resting during the bye. SOURCE:@JasonLaCanfora

Raiders RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) split reps today with Michael Bush during practice. If McFadden can go close to full speed Thursday, he will play Sunday against the Broncos. He’s a great flex play along with Bush if he can play. SOURCE: Vittorio Tafur on Twitter

Panthers WR Steve Smith seems to be having another miraculous recovery from an ankle injury suffered back in Week 3. Smith practiced in full Wednesday and is expected to start Sunday against the 49ers. I don’t know what voodoo doctor he visits but I need their number. Smith is a solid WR2 if he starts even with Clausen under center.

Titans RB Chris Johnson (thigh) was limited in practice Wednesday but isn’t expected to miss Sunday’s game. Its likely just some rest for Johnson who has just been getting a huge workload thus far. We will obviously monitor this situation but I highly doubt he will miss any time. QB Vince Young (ankle, knee) was also held out of practice Wednesday and his week 7 status is still up in the air. Back QB Kerry Collins (thumb) was held out of practice today as well but it is not believed to be serious.

49ers TE Vernon Davis(knee), practiced in full Wednesday and is close to 100%. He will start Sunday against the Panthers and is a must start. SOURCE: Matt Maiocco on Twitter

Eagles Desean Jackson has not yet passed his concussion tests thus far and will likely not play Sunday. The Eagles have also officially named Kevin Kolb the starter for Sunday’s game against the Titans. SOURCE: Jeffrey McLane on Twitter

Browns Coach Eric Mangini said Wednesday, unless Seneca Wallace(ankle) and Jake Delhomme (ankle) make significant progress the next few days, rookie Colt McCoy will make his second straight start against the Saints. McCoy played well against the Steelers Sunday and could have a similiar if not better game against the suspect Saints Defense.

Titans WR Justin Gage (hamstring) returned to a full practice Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday against the Eagles. The Gage injury opened the door for Kenny Britt to start and I can’t imagine with the way Britt has played, Coach Fischer would take snaps away from Britt for Gage. Britt is undoubtedly the most talented receiver on the team, so expect Gage, not Britt’s role to be reduced going forward.

Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker (shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday and the extent of this injury is still a mystery. We’ll keep an eye on this closely as the week goes on. SOURCE: Mark Long on Twitter

Cardinals WR Early Doucet (groin) returned to practice Wednesday in limited fashion. His status for this week is still up in the air. WR Steve Breaston (knee) after practicing in full Tuesday, was limited today but I believe it was only precautionary and he should start Sunday.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was held out of practice Wednesday but isn’t expected to miss any time, just some rest. SOURCE: Kevin Acee on Twitter

Chargers TE Antonio Gates (toe) was held out of Wednesday’s practice but is still being considered day-to-day by coach Norv Turner. He’s got a chance to play Sunday especially if he can practice either tomorrow or Friday. SOURCE: Kevin Acee on Twitter

Ravens Ray Rice was limited during Wednesday’s practice but he isn’t injured, it was just a day off so he’s good to go Sunday in a great matchup against the Bills. WR Derrick Mason (finger, ankle) was limited Wednesday but is expected to be fine and is a pretty good flex play against the Bills this week. SOURCE: Jamison Hensley on Twitter

Browns RB Peyton Hillis (quad) was limited in practice Wednesday but the fact that he did practice after being held out the last few Wednesday’s is a good sign. He’ll start Sunday against the 14th ranked run defense in the Saints.

Redskins TE Chris Cooley (concussion) participated in light drills today and has a chance to play this week. The Skins’ will be cautious with him but if he continues to have no ill effects he should start.

Dez Bryant (ribs, ankle) has been a full participant in practice this week unlike last week when he didn’t practice at all. He should be good to go Monday night against their division rivals the NY Giants. He’s a risky WR3 however since he hasn’t been very consistent during his young career.

Player Updates 10/19

Sorry guys we fell behind yesterday, I just started working and been a little off getting back into working mode. Here is some info and updates from around the league.

Michael Vick(ribs) is expected to return week 9 following their week 8 bye. Kevin Kolb has been playing well so Andy Reid’s decision to go back to Vick may not be as cut and dry as it was two weeks ago. Stay Tuned.

Sidney Rice (hip surgery) may return in three weeks according to Coach Brad Childress. He has been out since before the start of the season.

Antonio Gates injured his toe Sunday and left the game and didn’t return. The injury is not considered serious. Gates is a very tough player and will likely go Sunday and keep his 85 consecutive game streak alive.

Desean Jackson suffered a concussion Sunday after taking a SHOT from Falcon CB Dunta Robinson. Jackson’s status for this week is up in the air while Robinson should be alright to play this week but both left the game after the vicious yet legal hit. Jackson did do plenty of damage before leaving including a 31 yard TD run and catching a 34 yard TD pass. Robinson was also fined $50,000 for the hit.  UPDATE: Jackson will not be cleared to practice Wednesday and several reports are saying that he won’t return to practice until after the week 8 bye. Explore other options for the next two weeks at the receiver position.

Reggie Bush (fibula) is expected to return in week 8 while Pierre Thomas (ankle) has a good shot at returning Sunday against the Browns in a very good matchup.

Joseph Addai(shoulder) left Sunday nights game after injuring his shoulder once again and it was seen heavily wrapped. He had his best rushing performance in a long time, so it was sad to see this happen to him. Luckily the Colts have a bye this week and more than likely no more information will be given out until later in the week at best.

Ravens RB Willis McGahee was not traded at today’s trade deadline either. The Ravens are planning on getting Willis more touches in the first half of games. McGahee didn’t play this past week as many believed they didn’t want to risk him getting hurt before trying to trade him before today’s deadline. Now that hasn’t happened, and there going to try and work him in a little bit more, basically i feel to keep Ray Rice fresher for the 4th quarter. Rice is in no danger of losing his job and McGahee is merely a handcuff going forward, with some value as a flex play in TD heavy leagues.

Redskins WR Anthony Armstrong has been named the starter opposite Santana Moss going forward. Armstrong has much more value and potential at this point than Joey Galloway and should be owned in all leagues with McNabb throwing the ball a lot.

Todd Heap, who was hit with a helmet to helmet shot by Patriot Safety Brandon Meriweather reportedly has no concussion or neck injuries after an MRI Monday. Heap should be alright this week while Meriweather’s pockets took a hit in the sum of $50,000 for the illegal hit.

Rashard Mendenhall suffered a shoulder contusion Sunday after yet another big time hit by Browns rookie safety T.J. Ward. Initially many thought Mendenhall suffered a concussion but this is good news. Mendenhall will probably take a few days off from practice but looks like he is in no danger of missing Sunday’s game in Miami.

Vince Young is being considered day to day after an MRI revealed he has a mild knee strain and an ankle sprain. He may or may not be able to practice Wednesday. If he can’t go veteran Kerry Collins will start this week, hurting the value of RB Chris Johnson as well as emerging WR Kenny Britt.

Vernon Davis had an MRI Monday which revealed a knee contusion, much better than some people expected. He will be fine and start against the Panthers.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford reportedly will return and start after the week 7 bye. He has been out since week one with a shoulder injury will come back to face a terrible Redskin pass defense in week 8.

Darren McFadden (hamstring) will test the hammy out Wednesday to see if he can “burst” in his words and then determine how much more he’ll do over the course of the week. His status won’t be known until later in the week.

Jason Campbell suffered what is thought to be a torn meniscus in his knee, which could cause him to miss most of if not all of the season. Bruce Gradkowski still isn’t recovered from his shoulder injury and veteran Kyle Boller could make the start in Denver Sunday.

Texans MLB DeMeco Ryans tore his achilles Sunday against the Chiefs and will miss the rest of the season. It is being speculated that Zac Diles will move to the inside and take over for Ryans, opening up an outside spot for Xaiver Adibi. Diles could be a nice sleeper pickup in IDP leagues.

Josh Cribbs and Mohammed Massaquoi both suffered game ending concussions at the helmet of Steeler LB James Harrison, who today was fined $75,000 for those hits. Coach Eric Mangini believes Cribbs still has a shot to play this week while he wasn’t as confident in Massaquoi’s status. Another idea floating around is that both will sit until after the week 8 bye, which might be a great move on the Browns part and in the best interest of these two players.

Tampa RB Kareem Huggins will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL Sunday. Earnest Graham and rookie LaGarette Blount will see more touches going forward.

Chris Cooley suffered a concussion Sunday night and it actually happened in the 2nd quarter and didn’t leave the game until the 2nd half when he removed himself. Cooley suffered three in college and his week 7 status remains unclear.

Packers DB’s Atari Bigby(ankle), Al Harris (knee) and rookie RB James Starks (hamstring) are all expected to return to practice Wednesday after starting the season on the PUP list. Bigby and Harris should reclaim starting jobs within a week or so if they show there healthy while Starks has a possibility to take over the running duties if he can stay healthy and beat out the likes of Brandon Jackson and John Kuhn.

Steve Breaston(knee) has missed the last two games but is expected to practice Wednesday and has stated their is no doubt he will play this week against the Seahawks.

David Garrard also suffered a concussion Monday night against the Titans and his status for this week is still up in the air. I can’t remember seeing so many concussions on one injury report ever in my life, its almost sickening. Garrard was coming off two solid games. Trent Edwards will get the start if Garrard can’t go. Edwards who played poorly as has always been his M.O. isn’t a good fantasy option if he were to start.

Felix Jones apparently was vomiting and had to recieve and IV during halftime of Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. Jones was being leaned on early and often to carry the load but was almost completely out of gas by the half. He is not nor never will be the workhorse the Cowboys want him to be, but still can do a lot of damage even in a time share.

The Chargers had no phone calls from any teams inquiring about making a deal for Vincent Jackson before today’s 4pm trade deadline. He will report to San Diego on Oct 31 and be eligible to play his first game in week 12.

Packers placed LB Nick Barnett on the injured reserve, thus ending his season. SOURCE: Rob Demovsky on Twitter

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (concussion) practiced Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday. Coach McCarthy said Rodgers is “ready to play” barring any unforeseen setbacks. Keep him in your lineups in a solid home matchup against the Dolphins.

Colts RB’s Joseph Addai(shoulder) and Mike Hart(hip) returned to full practices Friday and will both play, with Hart backing up Addai. Donald Brown (hamstring) didn’t practice Friday and is unlikely to play again this week. WR’s Austin Collie(foot) and Pierre Garcon(hamstring) practiced without limitations Friday and will start Sunday night in Washington.

Maurice Jones-Drew(wrist,ankle) returned to practice Friday and will start Monday night against the Titans.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson(shoulder) had his most intense practice of the week Friday and it looks like he’ll go Sunday against the Giants in a tough matchup. SOURCE: Dave Birkett on Twitter

Lions WR Nate Burleson(ankle) was limited in practice Friday but is officially listed as probable for Sunday’s game against the Giants. RB Jahvid Best (toe) was also limited Friday but will start in a tough matchup Sunday.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas(ankle) has been officially ruled out for Week 6 against Tampa Bay. This was not unexpected as Thomas has been unable to practice all week. We’ll just wait and see how he feels going into week 7. Ladell Betts and Chris Ivory will once again split backfield duties. UPDATE: Thomas’s ankle sprain was originally diagnosed as a 4-6 week injury, which mean’s he’ll likely miss week 7 game as well. This is unfortunate as he is already expected to miss again and with their bye week not until week 10, it’ll be at least 5 games fantasy owners will be without Thomas. SOURCE: New Orleans Times-Picayune

Vikings QB Brett Favre(elbow) is being considered a game time decision as to whether he will play or not. He did do some light throwing Friday and should be good to go. This game could be do or die for the Vikings so I can’t imagine him not going. SOURCE: Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews practiced in full Friday and is line for more touches this week. Mike Tolbert still has value as a flex play against the Rams, but this could very well be his last week as a fantasy starter. SOURCE:  Kevin Acee on Twitter

WR Legedu Naanee (hamstring) missed practice again today and is expected to sit against the Rams. He hasn’t had any value since his great week one performance, so if you still own him, its time to cut bait. SOURCE:  Kevin Acee on Twitter

Texans WR Jacoby Jones (calf) fully practiced Friday and is expected to play Sunday against the Chiefs. SOURCE: Nick Scurfield on Twitter

RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) has still not been able to practice and is unlikely to play Sunday against the 49ers. Michael Bush will get the start and is a solid flex play this week.

Raiders QB Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder) isn’t expected to play Sunday and missed practice all week with this injury. Jason Campbell will get the start against the 49ers. SOURCE: Vittorio Tafur on Twitter

Broncos WR DeMaryius Thomas (head/neck) and RB Knowshon Moreno both practiced today and are looking like they’ll play Sunday against the Jets, but are both still being considered game time decisions. Neither are good plays this week, especially Thomas who has fallen to 4th on the depth chart. SOURCE: Andrew Mason on Twitter

Tampa WR Mike Williams (foot) is expected to be a game time decision Sunday against the Saints. He hasn’t practiced all week which is starting to worry me, so stay tuned early Sunday for an update. He’s a solid WR3 if he can play. SOURCE: Bucs on Twitter

10/8 Player Updates

First off, we would like to send our sincere condolences out to Albert Hayneworth and his family for the loss of his half brother, who tragically died last night in Tennessee in a motorcycle accident. We ourselves have lost someone close to us via a motorcycle accident and can understand that this is no easy thing to deal with. We wish the family the best and hope to see Albert back on the field soon.

Now on to the player news for today

Saints RB Pierre Thomas has been ruled out for Sunday’s game in Arizona. Rookie Chris Ivory and veteran Ladell Betts will likely split the load and both make solid flex plays this week.

Lions RB Jahvid Best(turf toe) was limited in practice Friday but is expected to play against the Rams. Keep him in your lineups, but check back Sunday morning for the latest update. TE Tony Scheffler was held out of practice all week but returned in limited fashion Friday. He will be a game time decision so check back Sunday morning for an update.

The Texans are expecting WR Andre Johnson(ankle) to suit up Sunday but is still considered a game time decision. WR Jacoby Jones is expected to sit with a calf injury.

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew(ankle) practiced fully for the second straight day and is good to go Sunday in Buffalo in a very very good matchup.

Raiders RB Darren McFadden(hamstring) is expected to miss Sundays game against the Chargers, Michael Bush will get the start. WR’s Louis Murphy(clavicle) and Darrius Heyward-Bey(groin) both practiced fully all week and will both start. QB Bruce Gradkowski(shoulder) practiced in full Friday and is expected to play as well.

Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe(hamstring) was limited in practice once again Friday but is still listed as probable for Monday night’s game against the Jets. He is likely to play but if you have a better option and cannot wait until Monday you may want to go that route.

Eagles QB Michael Vick(ribs) has officially been ruled out for this week’s game, Kevin Kolb will start. RB LeSean McCoy(ribs) returned to practice Friday and Coach Andy Reid anticipates McCoy will “play a full game” in San Francsico. Keep an eye out Sunday morning, but all things look good for McCoy to start, he is a solid RB2 this week.

Browns QB Jake Delhomme(ankle) status is still unknown, he was limited in practice Friday and a decision isn’t expected to be made until early Sunday. Delhomme shouldn’t be in any fantasy lineups anyway, but if he plays, WR Mohammed Massaquoi does get a slight boost in value. RB Peyton Hillis (thigh) was held out of Friday’s practice and is listed as questionable although Coach Mangini fully expects Hillis to play.

On the Colts injury report, WR’s Pierre Garcon(hamstring) and Reggie Wayne(knee) both fully participated in practice again Friday and are fully expected to start Sunday. Austin Collie(foot) is listed as questionable and is expected to be a game time decision. RB’s Donald Brown(hamstring) is listed as doubtful while Joseph Addai(knee) is listed as questionable even though he practiced in full all week. We will have updates on these guys throughout the weekend so keep checking back in.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews(ankle) was limited in practice this week but is expected to start Sunday. They appear to be slowly easing him back after this ankle injury and backup Mike Tolbert is expected to have a pretty even amount of touches with Mathews. Both are solid flex options against a terrible Raider’s run defense.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno(hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday against the Ravens. Laurence Maroney and Correll Buckhalter will share the carries. Neither is a good fantasy play.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw(ankle) returned to a limited practice Friday and officially is listed as questionable for Sunday in Houston. Bradshaw has stated that he will start however. He is a low end RB2 against a the second best run defense in the league who also gets Defensive Rookie of the Year Brian Cushing back this week.

Week 5 Hit & Recovery List by Alan Squatrito

The Hit & Recovery List will be a weekly column listing the Week’s most important injured players at each position and the best players to replace them with at their corresponding position in order of replacement effectiveness.

NFL HIT LIST
1.Steve Smith                 (The Real Steve Smith)
2.Lesean McCoy                   (Shady McCoy)
3.Michael Vick                       (Ron Mexico)
4.Darren McFadden              (Run D.M.C.)
5.Clinton Portis                           (Bubba)

It’s not going to be easy to fill in your lineups with someone to replace The Real Steve Smith. People also like to call him Football Rambo. On the flip side, his production hasn’t been great anyway so you might as well take the jump now anyway. Below are waiver wire fantasy wide receivers I think you should take a look at to plug in your lineups this week if you need help at that position.

  1. Brandon Tate – Now that Randy Moss is on the Vikings, Brandon Tate’s stock is going to rise significantly. Also, if your fantasy league gives you points for kickoff returns and punt returns taken to the house, this is a no brainer! Stash this cat on your bench as the Pats go into their week 5 bye.
  2. Steve Johnson – Ryan Fitzpatrick is not necessarily a winning quarterback nor will he ever will be (sorry Bills Fans) however he can make games fun to watch and he can put up some points. Steve Johnson has been doing a solid job ever since Trent Edwards got traded to the Jags and I see Steve Johnson as a consistent 3 wide receiver to take a risk on………………when the matchups are right. This week the Bills are at home playing against the Jags. Plus the Guy can jump over a Cadillac Escalade
  3. Brandon Gibson – Mark Clayton needs a sidekick too, lately Rookie Sam Bradford has been going through his progressions and looking for that other guy to make a play for the Rams. Brandon Gibson is the guy. The Rams play the Lions this week.
  4. Anthony Armstrong – You want to take a risk and be praised for it? This is the guy that will make that fat chick who knows just about as much football as your high school coach turn her head when you walk by her. That’s right I just said it, this is my sleeper wide receiver of the week. Mike Shanahan loves this kid and knows they need a real deep threat to add to their passing game, playing to one of Donovan’s strengths as well as his stellar play action fake. At 38 years old, Joey Galloway is just not going to cut it. Armstrong caught a huge pass for 59 yards last weekend and was very close to scoring a huge TD. So he was an inch away from being the biggest waiver wire pickup this week, next to Brandon Tate. The Redskins play a high flying Packers team at home and hope to keep up.
  5. Earl Bennett/James Jones/Jason Avant/David Clowney – These are the guys that have a chance of scoring each week but they are more of a solid 3-12 points each game. These guys are low end number three receivers and are scary (in a bad way) to put in each week. Despite that these players can make you cringe when you plug ‘em in your  lineup, if they do well, you feel that much cooler. Newly acquired David Clowney has raw talent all over him. He needs a better sense of the field but when Steve Smith comes back this kid will be a solid number two wide receiver the Panthers were looking for. Just keep that in the back of your mind.

Well if you drafted Clinton Portis, I hope you picked up Larry Johnson. If you picked up Larry Johnson, I hope you dropped him and picked up Ryan Torain. Clinton Portis is always falling apart despite his skill and blocking level. There are a couple of good waiver wire pickups to have this week and some are good to stash on your bench if you need running back help.

1.Ryan Torain – If you don’t have him by now, tough break. He’s probably gone on most waivers except possibly ten team leagues. Ryan Torain is a downhill runner and he likes to lay into people. I think he is a solid flex and even a solid number 2 running back start this week against the Packers.

2. Michael Bush – Darren McFadden’s strength is his speed. Hamstring injuries can be lingering and tough to deal with all year round. Raiders’ offense with Bruce Gradkowski has been surprisingly good. They move the ball well and Michael Bush will get his. Bush is a solid flex start this weekend against the Chargers unless they fall behind the Chargers fast and have to go to the air.

3. Danny Woodhead – Fantasy Alert! This guy is the new check down/underneath player the Patriots are falling in love with. He’s a smaller Wes Welker at the running back position, filling in for injured Kevin Faulk. Pick this guy up a.s.a.p.! He is low to the ground and electric. I know he is on a bye this week but stash him on your bench regardless.

4. Chris Ivory – The Saints play the Cardinals this week. This can get ugly. This can get so ugly that Chris Ivory can run wild in the late quarters of the game if the game is over early. Chris Ivory shows explosiveness which is always good to have when you’re playing for a fast New Orleans Saints team. Even if Pierre Thomas is healthy and plays he’s still worth a start this week against the Cardinals.

5.John Kuhn/Mike Bell/Derrick Ward – I put these guys all in order for a reason. Mike Bell is going to San Francisco against a desperate 0-4 team. His job for the Eagles was simply the go to guy to pick up a yard or two. I am not convinced of this guy yet nor do I think I will be.  However he will be given the full load and Shady McCoy has a shady injury that hasn’t been revealed yet to its fullest. Consider Mike Bell a desperate flex player this week against the 49ers. Silly head Coach Kubiak loves Derrick Ward now and has talked about giving him the ball more so just in case Arian Foster comes late to another meeting or God forbid goes down, pick Derrick up for your team. John Kuhn is a solid football player on a more than solid football team. With a team that always travels up and down the field this guy isn’t bad to take a chance on each week. He does split carries with Brandon Jackson, but he looks like he will be the goal line carrier when it’s all said and done.

Quarterbacks

  1. Shaun Hill – I know this may sound crazy but if Stafford isn’t going to go this weekend, Shaun Hill is the guy. The Lions ripped apart the Packers zone defense last week in Green Bay despite the loss. They put up 26 points against one of the best defenses in football. The Lions play at home this weekend and have no good excuse to lose to the St.Louis Rams.
  1. Bruce Gradowski – He looks like Jeff Garcia. Could it be? Bruce Gradowski finds a way to move the ball, even if it will cost him his life. Don’t forget he beat the Steelers last year in Heinz Field. He should put up decent numbers against the Chargers this week.
  1. Sam Bradford – I like the kid, I really do. He looks through his progressions and you can tell he puts in the extra time before and after practice. He is going to be a good one in the future and may put up decent numbers this week against the Lions.
