FantasySavvy-Week 9 Best Waiver Adds

Sorry for the delay on this, but today was extremely hectic and I also received some news about a death in the family. Nonetheless, there are some interesting pickups this week and I wanted to give my take on the specifics. Last week was a slow week, but this week while there aren’t too many pickups, it’s quality over quantity. The Following are ranked in order.

Jon Baldwin, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Baldwin is another one of those young, big, extremely talented wideouts. This talent was displayed on Monday night when he caught that bomb from Cassell in the endzone. Baldwin finished with 5 catches for 82 yards and the score. He’s 6-4, 230, runs solid routes and is extremely athletic. As long as he stays healthy, Baldwin is going to have some nice games to end the year this season. He is a must-add in all formats.

Kevin Faulk, RB, New England Patriots

Faulk has been out a year and half, but last week he came right in and played more than any other New England back. Faulk had 6 carries and was targeted 5 times in the passing game. It looks like he will now be a factor once again. The Pats trust him in the passing game and in big spots, because Faulk has been in those situations time and time again. Look for Faulk to give you similar numbers to what Danny Woodhead produced last year making him a fairly nice add in PPR leagues.

Javon Ringer, RB, Tennessee Titans

Chris Johnson is shot out and the coaching staff is finally starting to realize this. He’s worn down from Fisher running him into the ground and obviously wasn’t in great shape coming into this season. It now looks like Ringer will get at least the split of the carries as he is out-producing Johnson. He makes for a decent flex in deeper leagues.

Heath Miller, TE, Pittsburgh Steelers

Heath Miller is back. I thought this guy was in his 30′s because he has been playing so long but to my surprise he’s only 29 years old. It appears Miller is healthy, he’s running solid routes and Ben has been targeting him a ton the last two weeks. I don’t think this is a 2 week hot streak, I believe Miller is going to be consistent for the rest of the season. He could finish the year as a Top 10 TE in PPR leagues.

Brent Celek, TE, Philadelphia Eagles

Brent Celek is back as well as he has returned to fantasy prominence. Celek has scored in back to back weeks and last week finished with 7 catches for 94 yards. Michael Vick historically has favored the Tight end and with defenses so concerned with Jackson and Maclin deep, Celek has been the benefactor. The Eagles and Vick have been heating up and Celek is joining them in that ride. Celek could have a strong finish to the 2011 season.

Laurent Robinson, WR, Dallas Cowboys

This is mostly for deeper leagues, but Robinson hasn’t been terrible this year. He has two games with over 100-yards receiving and last week found the endzone while finishing with 7 catches and 103 yards. Romo likes Robinson and while defenses are focused on Bryant, Austin and Witten, Romo is finding Robinson open.

Lastly I want to talk about adding some key backups now that we are 8 weeks in. Some guys you should be looking to add are Kendall Hunter, Dion Lewis, Ben Tate, Issac Redman, Phillip Tanner, Benard Scott and Chris Ivory. Now is the time to cut any waste on your team and get creative. All of these backs could step in and produce if there is an injury to the starter. We have mentioned some of these players in the past, but I specifically like Hunter, Lewis and Tate the most. Finally, we didn’t do our radio show tonight but will be on Wed or Thurs or both nights to review Week 8 and Preview week 9. You can check for updates at Blogtalkradio.com/Fantasy. Also Start Em Sit Em’s will be released on Thursday and the Rankings on Friday.

Thanks everyone, thanks for sticking with us, we are going to help you finish this season strong.

The following players are ranked in order.

Tim Tebow, QB, Denver Broncos

Tebow was officially named the starter today and rightfully so. Kyle Orton is what he is, an average QB. The Broncos had no upside with him at QB. Tebow, while extremely raw, has a lot of upside and the Broncos need to see what he can do.  This is Tebow’s shot and frankly I am somewhat a believer. First Tebow is an extremely hard worker and is going to do everything in his power to be the best QB he can be and to master this offense. There is no doubt he has leadership qualities, he just brings that demeanor. We saw it in college and now we saw a brief glimpse of it on Sunday when he nearly brought the Broncos back against the Chargers. Tebow will probably finish this year with a poor completion percentage and TD/Int ratio, but there is no doubt he will pile up rushing yards and TD’s. If you have an empty roster spot or have some bums you can cut to add Tebow, do it, even if you are stacked at QB. He’s a solid add for trade bait, keeper leagues or to be your starting QB.

Jackie Battle, RB, Kansas City Chiefs

I want to start out by saying that if Ryan Torain is still available in your league he’s the #1 back to own, but I am assuming that he was picked up last week in most leagues, so I left him out of this week’s list. But it appears Battle is going to take the reins in Kansas City, there’s no reason he shouldn’t. Thomas Jones has proven he isn’t the same runner with his terrible YPC average. Dexter McCluster is obviously not a between the tackles and every down type of back. Battle (6’2, 240), a 5th year player out of Houston University, got an opportunity and took advantage of it. Battle isn’t heavily talented, but he’s a bruiser who is running behind one of the better offensive lines in football. Battle will still have to deal with the Chiefs playing from behind a good amount and Thomas Jones’ presence, but it’s clear he is the best option for their running game. If you are in desperate need for a RB, go pick up Battle and expect him to have some games similar to what he did last week when he ran for 119 yards on 19 carries. The Chiefs want to run the ball and Battle should be their man.

Delone Carter and Donald Brown, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Personally I think it’s somewhat of a tossup between these two. Addai has a hamstring injury that looks to be somewhat serious and could keep him out anywhere from 2-6 weeks. We all know hammy’s tend to linger. So who do you pick up? Brown is the better all-around RB, but Carter is more likely to receive goal line carries since he was drafted to handle short yardage situations. Brown has been around for a few years now and has failed to impress time and time again, so it’s hard to believe in him. It really doesn’t look like either has the talent to separate from one another. I would say go with Carter in Standard and keeper leagues and go with Brown in PPR leagues. Or if you can add both, hope for one of them to breakout, regardless if you need help they are definitely worth a roster spot with Addai out.

Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Oakland Raiders

Heyward- Bey was Al Davis’ guy, many joked Davis just looked at his 40 time and picked him. But Heyward-Bey, after doing nothing in his first two seasons it’s slowly starting to emerge. He impressed in training camp this year and it looks like his hard work is starting to translate. Bey has good size at 6’2, 210, obviously blazing speed and is the number #1 wideout on the Raiders. They are using Bey on a lot of double moves to utilize his speed and it’s worked thus far. Bey is also showing his skills after the catch. It’s hard to trust Jason Campbell, but he has played decent and has the running game with Mcfadden to help the pass game and play action. Look for Bey to have a fairly solid season in his third year in the NFL.

Steve Breaston, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Breaston is talented, we saw that in 2008 when he caught 77 balls for 1000 yards while catching passes from Kurt Warner. Now Matt Casell is starting to utilize Breaston. Bowe will draw a lot of coverage his way and that will leave room for Breaston to operate, and he is good after the catch. If you need help at WR, Breaston is a decent add.

Doug Baldwin, WR, Seattle Seahawks

I love this kid and he might be the best pick up of all the wideouts out there, but I simply don’t trust Tavaris Jackson. He would probably be better off with Charlie Whitehurst and who knows a change could be coming. He also is the 3rd WR behind Sidney Rice and Ben Obomanu. As far as talent, Baldwin has it. He is quick shifty and runs nice crisp routes, also knows how to make defenders miss. He kind of fits a Steve Smith (PHI) mold and I believe that is what Pete Carroll saw in him. Carroll also knows how to utilize these type of players with short quick hits and screens. Baldwin exploded for 8 catches and 138 yards last week and he should be a solid contributor in PPR leagues the rest of the way.  Go add him, especially in keeper leagues.

Other Adds, Curtis Painter, Alex Smith, Jake Ballard (slow as molasses but decent) Joel Dreesen (should be solid while Andre Johnson is out, def #1 TE add for now), Evan Moore (role should increase off bye week)

Sneaky Add of the week- Dion Lewis- If you are a Lesean McCoy owner, I think Lewis is a solid add. If McCoy gets hurt, Lewis has the talent and similar skillset to do some of things McCoy can do. Of course Ronnie Brown is still there, but Lewis will be a very solid PPR play.
