FantasySavvy 2012: Week 16 Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em (Super Bowl Edition)

As seen on FP911.com, make sure to check there for tons of great additional information.

Congratulations, you made it to your Super Bowl, this is what it is all about. All the research, pickups, lineup decisions, etc, come down to this moment. Regardless of what happens this week, you have had a very successful season and have done a great job managing your team. I hope you all of you that are reading this take care of business this week and finish the deal. Thanks for reading everybody and I hope to see you all back next season. Also, I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This is truly the best time of the year.

You won’t see the obvious names on here, that would be pointless. Maybe occasionally to give you a reminder, but rather we are looking to identify some guys that you may be on the fence with and encourage you to either start or sit them. Matchups will be broken down, stats will be used, some projections will be provided and some “gut” feeling will be mixed in. But when it comes down to the come down, it’s your “gut” you need to roll with.

*Players listed in order of projected effectiveness in the start ‘em category and ineffectiveness in the sit ‘em category.

Quarterbacks

Start ‘Em

Andrew Luck @ Kansas City

Luck has been held under 200 yards passing in his last two games, but he’s going to break out of that against the Chiefs. The Colts are going to get a ton of opportunities with the ball since the Chiefs offense is so inept. Look for Luck to approach 250 yards with at least two TD’s.

Colin Kaepernick @ Seattle

Tough matchup here, but Kaepernick still is worthy of starting. He may be held to just one passing TD, but Kaep will likely approach at least 40 yards rushing and should be able to pass for over 200 making him a solid fantasy play.

Sam Bradford @ Tampa Bay

Danny Amendola returns and Bradford throws for 377 yards and three TD’s. Bradford should continue to wheel and deal against the Bucs horrible secondary, ranked dead last in points allowed to QB’s. Expect around 250 yards passing with at least two TD’s.

Sit ‘Em

Jay Cutler @ Arizona

The Cards are third best against QB’s and Jay Cutler is having a very mediocre season. While the Bears may get a ton of possessions in this game, Cutler can not be trusted.

Josh Freeman vs St. Louis

Freeman fooled all of us, it appears he is the average QB he has always been. I didn’t want to believe in this guy, but after he went on such a hot stretch mid-year I thought he had turned a corner. However, after last week where he could not even manage to produce a single point for the Bucs offense against the Saints defense, it is pretty apparent this guy does not have what it takes to take that next step. You can not turn back to this guy this week, not in the Fantasy Super Bowl.

Russell Wilson vs San Francisco

Wilson is having a stellar rookie season with 21 TD’s, just nine interceptions and nearly 3,000 yards passing. It’s pretty hard to recommend benching him this week after he accounted for four TD’s last week, but this isn’t the Bills, it’s the 49ers. Last time he faced them he struggled completing just nine passes, throwing for just 123 yards with no TD’s. He most likely will play better this time around, but there is a chance he could be held without a TD once again.

Running Backs

Start ‘Em

DeMarco Murray vs New Orleans

DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys

Murray being out for several weeks may have been a blessing in disguise for the Cowboys with Murray now being fresh and running hard as ever. This is just an excellent matchup for DM this week and I really forsee a monster game from him. His physical style matches up perfectly against this Saints defense. Murray should easily go over 100 yards and finish with at least 1 TD.

Vick Ballard @ Kansas City

Ballard now has the starting job all to himself and is taking full advantage of it. He is a fairly talented back and he should enjoy a nice game against the Chiefs. I expect him to find the endzone and approach and possibly have over 100 yards rushing. He ran for 100 yards against the Texans; he can easily do it against the Chiefs.

DeAngelo Williams vs Oakland

After years of just pure Fantasy Horribleness, DeAngelo Williams has once again returned to Fantasy relevancy. He is actually starting to run with purpose and is getting the job done for Fantasy Owners. Well, with Oakland coming up, you really can’t ask for a better matchup. Now, DeAngelo does still have the potential to burn you, but I think it’s safe to say he should finish with around 100 total yards in this game and has a decent chance to find the endzone. The Panthers offense is rolling right now and DeAngelo is going to continue to benefit.

Sit ‘Em

Bryce Brown vs Washington

LeSean McCoy owners, such as myself, wish he had come back sooner after Brown threw up two duds in a row; but with the news McCoy will in fact return this week, Brown needs to be on benches. I wouldn’t expect any more than 10 touches, but he may not even get that, the fumbling problems are going to cost him playing time in this game.

Beanie Wells vs Chicago

Beanie went off for three TD’s last week against Detroit, but please don’t start him against the Bears. This has 15 carries for 40 yards written all over it. Stay away.

Jonathan Dwyer vs Cincinnati

Dwyer is still technically the starter, but isn’t seeing many carries with just 15 in his last two games and is not playing at a high level. He has scored in two of his last three games, but against the Bengals tough front four he needs to be avoided.

Wide Receivers

Start ‘Em

Steve Smith vs Oakland

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith

After a extremely slow start to the season, Steve Smith has been heating up the last few weeks as Cam Newton’s play has stepped up. Smith has two 100-yard games and two TD’s in his last three games and has an excellent matchup against Oakland. Smith could have his best game of the season.

Cecil Shorts & Justin Blackmon vs New England

Both are strong options in a game where the Jags are going to be throwing the ball all day long. Cecil Shorts is the better option from Blackmon, but both should be able to put up respectable numbers and get it done for your Fantasy Squads. Look for Shorts to hit 100 yards and Blackmon to near that mark as well.

Michael Crabtree @ Seattle

Crabtree continues to be targeted heavily by Kaepernick every week and he needs to be in your lineups in the Fantasy Super Bowl. Crabtree has 23 targets, two 100-yard games and two TD’s in his last three games.

Sit ‘Em

Josh Gordon & Greg Little @ Denver

I would steer clear from both of these guys this week, especially Little, with the Browns facing Champ Bailey in coverage and the Broncos pass rush. After a slow start, Denver has creeped it’s way all the way to seventh best at defending the WR position.

Larry Fitzgerald vs Chicago

Tip for next year: Avoid WR’s who play with horrible QB’s. Fitzgerald has been a disaster this season with the likes of John Skelton, Kevin Kolb and Ryan Lindley throwing him the ball. Despite the name and although you may be desperate this week, try to steer clear from Fitz against the Bears.

Danario Alexander @ New York Jets

Danario killed owners last week by putting up the infamous doughnut, but if you were lucky enough to advance despite his performance, you need to look at benching him this week. Antonio Cromartie has done an excellent job all season on No. 1 WR’s and he should be able to contain Alexander.

Tight Ends

Start ‘Em

Greg Olsen vs Oakland

Like they do with every other position, the Raiders also let up a ton of points to Tight Ends, ranked 4th worst. Olsen has been extremely steady the past six weeks with four 50 yard games and and four TD’s. Start him with confidence.

Dennis Pitta vs New York Giants

I faced Dennis Pitta in two leagues last week who went off for 100 yards and two TD’s and you can guess how that turned out. Unbelievable. But Pitta needs to stay in your lineups as Flacco will continue to look his way, especially in the redzone. Pitta has 19 targets and three TD’s in his last two games.

Antonio Gates @ New York Jets

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates

Being a Jet fan, I know how bad they have been historically at covering Tight Ends. Their LB’s just don’t have the speed or athleticism to keep up with the athletic Tight Ends of the league. Gates finally got back into the endzone last week and I expect him to put up respectable numbers against the Jets. Look for around 60-70 yards with a possible score.

Sit ‘Em

Joel Dreesen & Jacob Tamme vs Cleveland

These guys hurt each other’s value and it’s hard to predict which one will have the bigger impact each week. Regardless, both have been mediocre all year. The Browns are also 5th best at defending the Tight End position.

Kyle Rudolph @ Houston

After scoring in three consecutive games, Rudolph hasn’t scored and has just 23 yards receiving in his last two games. Christian Ponder is playing pretty awful at this point in the season and Rudolph isn’t going to contribute for you team unless he scores. He’s way too risky to use, look for something more consistent.

IDP’s

Start ‘Em

London Fletcher @ Philadelphia

London Fletcher, Washington Redskins

Fletcher has had another strong season with 52 tackles for the Skins and now faces the Eagles who are allowing the most points to LB’s.

Wesley Woodward vs Cleveland

Woodward has been a force for the Denver defense all season and is a great play against the Browns who are allowing the 8th most points to Fantasy LB’s.

Sit ‘Em

Cortland Finnegan @ Green Bay

Bad matchup for Finnegan who will be squaring off against the talented Packers WR’s and Aaron Rodgers who is extremely smart with the football.

Richard Sherman vs San Francisco

Sherman will be limited this week as the 49ers aren’t turning the ball over much and are allowing the 2nd fewest amount points to CB’s.

Chargers Antonio Gates (foot) and Malcom Floyd (hamstring) are out for tonights game against the 49ers.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (appendectomy)was limited in practice Thursday for the second straight day. The feeling around Kansas City is that he’ll be able to go but it’s obvious he’s not 100% just yet. Stay tuned.

Chris Ivory (hamstring) will be reevaluated tomorrow for his hamstring injury after getting an injection to promote the healing process. His status for this week is still up in the air. Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush would shoulder the load if Ivory couldn’t go.

Percy Harvin (migraine) returned to practice Thursday and is on schedule to start Monday night against the Bears. Rookie QB Joe Webb is also slated to make his first career start against the very tough Bears defense. I wouldn’t expect a ton out of Webb, but he is wide receiver eligible in yahoo league’s so he may be an asset their, especially if he can use his feet a little bit.

Raiders TE Zach Miller (foot) practiced in full Thursday and should be good to go Sunday against the Broncos. Miller finally posted solid numbers last week grabbing four balls for 68 yards, so he’s a solid start this week now that he seems to be healthy.

The Packers will make a decision on Aaron Rodgers (concussion) status by Saturday. The feel is that he won’t be able to go but we’ll just have to wait and see. Without Rodgers, the Pack has virtually no shot at beating the Patriots. Matt Flynn would make his first career start if Rodgers couldn’t go.

Austin Collie (concussion) is going to make his return Sunday in a big divisional game against the Jags. He’s a solid WR3. Joseph Addai (neck/shoulder) and Mike Hart (ankle) were both limited at practice Thursday and are not expected to play. Javarris James and Donald Brown will share the load with Jame’s being the much better flex start over Brown.

Desean Jackson (foot) was unable to practice Thursday but proclaims he’ll start on Sunday against the Giants. We’ll have to wait on see on this one, as DJax isn’t the only one who gets to make this decision.

Cardinals Beanie Wells (flu) and Steve Breaston (knee) were both limited in practice Thursday but both are expected to play. With Tim Hightower undoubtedly the better option at this point, keep Wells on your bench, if he’s still even owned in your league.

Kyle Orton (forearm) may be unable to go Sunday and has been unable to practice the last few days. Rookie Tim Tebow has been taking all the first team reps and would start if Orton wasn’t able to go. Brandon Lloyd (calf) returned to full participation in practice Thursday and will be good to go Sunday vs. the Raiders.

Arian Foster was added to the Texans injury report with a hip issue but has not sat out any practices. This is a good sign as the injury doesn’t appear to be serious and he is expected to play in a great matchup against the Titans.

Donald Driver (quad) is not listed on the Packers injury report after sitting out practice early in the week. He’s not a good start this week unless Rodgers is able to play.

David Garrard seemed to have tweaked his hamstring during Thursday’s practice or possibly Wednesday’s and was limited today. I wouldn’t worry to much about it as he’s a fighter and their is no way he’s sitting out against the Colts with the division on the line.

Patriots receiver Deion Branch (knee) was limited in practice today but should be fine and is expected to start against Green Bay Sunday.

Adrian Peterson (knee) was added to the Vike’s injury report Thursday but it is not thought of as serious and he should be good to go Monday night against the Bears.

Dolphins Brandon Marshall left tonight’s game with an apparent hamstring injury. Were not yet sure whether it was just a cramp or something more serious. As we find out more we’ll be sure to pass it along to you.

Colts RB Joseph Addai(neck) participated in Thursday’s practice in a limited fashion. It’s likely to be a game time decision this week but its encouraging to say the least. Donald Brown’s value was already little to none and will become non-existent once Addai is back healthy. WR Austin Collie(concussion) was a full participant at Thursday practice and is slated to suit up Sunday in New England.  SOURCE: Paul Kuharsky on Twitter

The Panthers have now named 8 year veteran Brian St. Pierre there starting QB for Sunday’s game and not rookie Tony Pike. This is an odd move after hearing all week that it would be Pike. This however should have no fantasy impact and all Panthers should remain on benches and waiver wires.

Texans Andre Johnson(ankle) and Matt Schaub(knee) both practiced on a limited basis Thursday and both are expected to start Sunday against the Jets. TE Owen Daniels(hamstring) missed practice again and has virtually no chance at playing Sunday. SOURCE: Nick Scurfield on Twitter

Chiefs WR/RB Dexter McCluster(ankle) was limited in practice Thursday and is likely to be a game time decision. TE Tony Moeaki(concussion) sat out Thursday practice and is very unlikely to go Sunday if he’s yet to practice at this point in the week.

Steelers WR Hines Ward(concussion) practiced in full for the second straight day and is going to start Sunday. Get him back into your lineup against the Raiders secondary which is likely to be without Nnamdi Asomugha again.

Redskins RB Clinton Portis(groin) was limited in practice Thursday and is likely to be a game time decison. Ryan Torain(hamstring) has yet to practice this week and we’d bet he sits this week as well. Rookie Keiland Williams is likely to get the majority of the load in Tennessee Sunday and is a viable flex play especially in PPR leagues.

Brett Favre(elbow, ankle) and Percy Harvin(ankle) were both limited in practice on Thursday however both are expected to play Sunday against the Packers. SOURCE: Tom Pelissero on Twitter

Packers WR Donald Driver(quad) was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday and will attempt to fully participate on Friday. If he can, he’s likely to play but if he’s limited again, James Jones would likely get the start with Driver being used sparingly at best.

Jaguars WR Mikes Sims-Walker(ankle) missed his second straight practice Thursday and his Week 11 status is still unclear. We’ll monitor this injury closely and up date everyone as info comes in.

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells(knee) was limited in practice Thursday, one day after stating his knee hasn’t felt this good since September. He still insists he’ll play Sunday but Coach Whisenhunt has yet to announce if Wells or Tim Hightower will start Sunday.

Saints RB’s Chris Ivory(shoulder) and Reggie Bush(fibula) were both limited during Thursday practice but are expected to play Sunday. I wouldn’t get overly excited about either of these guys, but if you had to start one, i’d go with Bush based purely on his play making ability. I wouldn’t expect Coach Payton to give Bush a heavy workload, i’d look for 8-10 touches but he could always break a big play. Pierre Thomas(ankle) has yet to participate in team drills during practice but is at least in pads and doing individual drills. Coach Payton says, “I think we’ve turned a corner”, which is a positive sign but he won’t be back until at least next week at the earlier.

Bengals RB Cedric Benson(foot) returned to a limited practice Thursday. His status isn’t yet known but we’d expect him to suit up in a great matchup at home against the Bills.

LeSean McCoy(shoulder) was limited in practice Thursday but he’s fully expected to play. I mean the guy played through broken ribs, I’d be shocked if he didn’t go this week against the Giants. We’ll keep you posted on any updates but signs point toward McCoy playing.

Redskins RB Ryan Torain(hamstring) will be visiting the doctor about this injury. He was expected to start last nights game before feeling some tightness and rookie Keiland Williams carried the load. Williams would be a RB2 in PPR leagues against the Titans if Torain were to sit out this week. Right now it doesn’t look good for the oft-injured Torain to go in Week 11. Stay Tuned.

Bears WR Johnny Knox(flu, ankle) practiced Tuesday and should be fine for this weeks game.

Chiefs rookie TE Tony Moeaki suffered a concussion during Sunday’s blow out loss to the Broncos. Stay tuned to us as we will monitor his test results to see if he can play this week.

Giants receiver Steve Smith(torn pectoral muscle) is expected to be out until early December, opening the door for Mario Manningham to have some big games during that stretch. 2nd year man Ramses Barden suffered a left foot injury during Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys and has been placed on IR. In a response move, they resigned WR Derek Hagans who will split #3 receiver duties with rookie Duke Calhoun.

Steelers cut K Jeff Reed today and signed former Redskin Kicker Shane Suisham. Reed, who missed a chip shot field goal Sunday against the Patriots has struggled all season.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he expects WR Hines Ward(concussion) to play this week. Ward left Sunday’s loss early and ended his 186 consecutive game streak with at least one reception. It looks like he’ll start a new streak Sunday.

Cards RB Beanie Wells(knee) who was inactive Sunday, is believed to have healed up during the week off and is expected to return Week 11.

Raiders WR Darrius Heyward-Bey(hamstring) is in serious danger of missing this weeks game. The bye week apparently didn’t help the injury heal and you should make other arrangements if he was someone you are relying on. His absense would allow week 9 Raider hero Jacoby Ford to draw another start.

Chargers RB Ryan Mathews(ankle) is still not 100% after the bye week and remains questionable for Sunday’s game.

Chargers WR Malcom Floyd(hamstring) returned to practice Monday and appears to be ready to go this week after missing the past few games. With Floyd returning as well as Vincent Jackson in week 12, Seyi Arijotutu and Patrick Crayton appear to have only one “valuable” week left in them so take advantage in week 11.

Antonio Gates(toe) still is not sure if he’ll play this week so stay tuned and be prepared to find another option in case he can’t go.

Bills rookie CJ Spiller(hamstring) is considered out indefinitely and Fred Jackson‘s value goes way up. Jackson posted 170 total yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win vs. the Lions.

Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen suffered a concussion Sunday and his week 11 status is up in the air. Fellow rookie QB Tony Pike would be next in line to start if Clausen can’t go.

Colts RB Joseph Addai(neck) is expected to return this week, but he’ll have to appear in practice at least once to guarantee. Addai’s return would be big  for the Colts especially since Donald Brown hasn’t shown anything.

Jets WR Jericho Cotchery(groin) is expected to miss at least two weeks after suffering a groin tear in Sunday’s come from behind win over the Browns.

Seahawks QB Matt Hasselback(wrist) is expected to start Sunday against the Saints.

The Saints are hoping to get Pierre Thomas(ankle) back on the practice field some time this week, but that remains very iffy. It’s more likely that we’ll see Thomas return to the field in Week 12 rather than this week. We’ll keep you posted on his status. Reggie Bush(leg) says he fully expects to play this week after missing the last eight weeks. I wouldn’t expect a huge workload from Bush even if he returns and Thomas does not as they will likely work him back into the mix slowly. Bush isn’t more than a flex starter at best for his first game back.

Week 9 Fantasy Matchups (Breakdown of 1 O’clocks)

By Alan Squatrito

Falcons vs. Buccaneers
The New Orleans Saints are not in first place in their division, they are in third! The Tampa Buccaneers are currently battling for the first place spot in the NFC South as they travel to the Georgia Dome to face the 5-2 Falcons in week 9. The Buccaneers are also 5-2 and the Saints are right behind them at 5- 3. It’s going to be tough to stay atop the division in the NFC South as the season progresses for the Buccaneers but they have been playing great football in general and on the road. However, I believe the Falcons will get a win at home this week. Michael Turner has yet to run for back to back 100 yard games and I think it’s safe to say he will do so after week 9 is in the books.  The Bucs are giving up 5.2 yards a carry while Michael Turner is averaging 4.5 yards a carry. He is going to bowl right through the Bucs this weekend no doubt. The Falcons are 27th against the pass while the Bucs are 13th with 14 interceptions (most in the NFL), so there is more reason to believe the Bucs will get a heavy dose of Turner Burner this weekend. I think the Bucs are going to be down early and have to eventually abandon the run. Josh Freeman is a high number 2 QB start this weekend and Mike Williams is a clear number 1 despite Dunta Robinson being back out on the field. LeGarrette Blount should play well, but we shall see comes Sunday, don’t count him out just yet, the Bucs may keep this game within reach.

Ravens vs. Dolphins
It is true; the Dolphins are 4-0 on the road and 0-3 at home. It’s time for a flip-flop. The Dolphins aren’t going to go into Baltimore and get another road win after upsetting the Cincinnati Benglas on the road last week. To win two games in a row on the road is a tough task in general. The Bengals were desperate last week for a win and couldn’t get it done. The Dolphins struggled in the red zone as they usually do to give Dan Carpenter all their fantasy points. The Ravens hate it when opposing offenses try to score within their red zone and I feel as though this is where Miami will make their mistakes. The Ravens are also coming fresh off their bye with Ed Reed getting his legs back from underneath him. The Ravens are 9th against the pass even though they can give up big plays, but they are also allowing 4.2 yards on the ground per attempt. If I were the Dolphins I would bring back the wild cat offense and pull some tricks out of the hat, but that’s the only way I can see them pulling off another win on the road. I see Ray Rice exploding with numerous opportunities including being involved with the pass game. He should see a couple of screen passes his way as well. The Dolphins are playing well against the run (3.8) a carry but the Ravens’ offensive line is going to boss around a tired front four all day long. I like Derrick Mason and Anquan Boldin as solid starts in fantasy this week. I see Mason as a flex start and Boldin as a number 2 start. Brandon Marshall could blow up because his nickname is Godzilla but I rank him and Davone Bess very close to one another especially in ppr leagues.

Bills vs. Bears
The Buffalo Bills are 0-7 thus far this season but are playing their hearts out to get a win! There last three games have been close while they still can’t seem to put it all together. Steve Johnson has been a nice surprise for the Bills, he is emerging as a true number one receiver with 5 touchdowns in 5 consecutive games and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he got his 6th touchdown in week 9. Mike Martz has been talking to the media about how Jay Cutler is losing confidence with his role under center for the Bears, and I wouldn’t blame him because it’s not an easy thing to erase from your memory when you throw four interceptions in your last game, especially if it’s to one player, but maybe Mike Martz will abandon the pass game and feed Forte and Taylor all day? Yikes, I wouldn’t count on it. Jay Cutler is in an offensive system where timing is everything. His receivers aren’t the best receivers around the league, and he isn’t the best quarterback in the league to make any receiver look great. I know the Bears are playing well and have a solid defense but I still don’t trust them this week. I see Forte having a great day but not great enough to get the Bears the win. I am not a fan of starting Jay Cutler this week even though the Bills are 26th against the pass. I see him as a number 2 QB start. Johnny Knox will produce as usual in ppr leagues and Earl Bennett could emerge to be Cutler’s other go to guy. I like Ryan Fitzpatrick as a low-end number 1 this weekend. Could the Bills still lose this weekend? Definitely, but if they are going to have an opportunity to win at all this season, it will be against the Bears at home this weekend.

Panthers vs. Saints
The Saints finally looked like their former selves in last week’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers but they still seem to be somewhat lax when needing to string consecutive solid games together . It is interesting to note that Carolina’s Matt Moore has won 5 of his last 7 starts at home while DeAngelo Williams 119.8 yards per game on the ground when he faces off against the Saints, he won’t be facing off against them this week however. Marques Colston has at least 5 catches in five consecutive games and I can’t picture him not having a 6th consecutive game with five catches or more as the Saints seem to be heating up. The Panthers kept it close last game but unless DeAngelo Williams is playing I can’t picture the Saints losing in week 9. I expect Lance Moore and Colston to carry the load with Robert Meachem to have a solid receiving day as well. The Panthers ranks 21st against the run but only give up 3.6 yards a carry. I see Chris Ivory as a low number 2 running back this week because Drew Brees is simply going to carry everything on his shoulders. Jonathan Stewart should be an honest number 2 running back this week as the Saints give up 4.1 yards a carry on the ground, they can only help his 2.8 yards per carry average get better. I know Matt Moore is 5 and 7 at home in his last 7 starts but you can only take a guess when he is going to play well, and the Saints have momentum to  build on. Until Matt Moore plays consistently well, I wouldn’t count too much on any Panther this week.

Browns vs. Patriots
Coach Belichick and Coach Mangini are definitely an awkward combination together when they are in the same room, out on the same field, or coaching on the same team. They usually don’t like shaking hands after the end of a regulation game and it will be fun to watch this awkwardness continue after week 9 when the Patriots visit the Browns in the Dog Pound.  The Patriots have beaten the Browns the last four times they have played one another and I think it is going to be time for a fifth. Although the Browns beat the Saints and have kept games close at home within three points, I still believe the Patriots are going to win this game with ease. The Browns defense ranks in the bottom half of the league against the pass and the run. That’s pretty much all I have to write, and Colt McCoy is still behind center. This skews the previous stats mentioned at home where the Browns have had tendencies in keeping it close. I still expect the clock to run all game along with the Great White Water Buffalo (Peyton Hillis). Peyton Hillis feels at 100% and he is a bruiser, he will run wild against the Patriots defense giving the Browns the only possible chance to keep the game within reach against the Pats comes Sunday. I am still waiting for Brady to have a magnificent day through the air and this game gives him a great chance to have one. I like Peyton Hillis, Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Danny Woodhead as great starts this week while it may be a coin flip between Deion Branch and Brandon Tate on who will have the better day. I am not a big fan of Benjarvus Green-Ellis this week because I think Coach Belichick wants to get his passing attack going early and often in week 9.

Lions vs. Jets

The Lions are looking great with Mathew Stafford behind center and it is a good thing they will be playing at home this week against the Jets, even though it may not matter much. It’s funny that Mike Shanahan couldn’t just give credit to the Lions front four opposed to pulling Donovan McNabb out of the game but he will be the one to deal with all the criticism, not Donovan.  We will never know if Donovan McNabb would have made a comeback win in the last two minutes of the game against Detroit last week, despite how great the Lions defense played throughout the game. You can never assume. But one fact will still always remain when it comes to the NFL. Games are won and lost inside of the trenches and the Redskins offensive line has to be one of the worst O-lines in the NFL while the Jets O-Line is one of the best.  That is going to be the main difference in this week’s battle in Ford Field. The Lions are 27th against the run giving up 4.9 yards a carry. The Jets are averaging 5.0 yards a carry and I can’t seem to think that will change come Sunday. I expect Calvin Johnson to have a solid day with at least one touchdown while Jahvid Best and Kevin Smith are going to struggle. Ladanian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene are going to be a great duo this weekend and I like Shonn as a flex play. I like Brandon Pettrigrew and Dustin Kellar in this game putting up solid number tight end numbers. Sanchez is more of a low-end number two quarterback while Stafford is a low-end number one this week.

Texans vs. Chargers
No matter who is out or injured, this will be a high scoring game. Matt Schaub put up a devastating ten points in fantasy last week and I’d be surprised if he did something along the same lines in week 9. Andre Johnson is hurting; Antonio Gates is hurting, what will Schaub and Rivers do? Find a way to get points regardless. I expect the Chargers to get all three running back involved heavily in this game to move the ball considering the fact that Naanee is out for the game, Malcom Floyd is still out, and Buster Davis is on i.r. with a rib injury. Philip Rivers quarterback rating is a 98 while Matt Schaub’s quarterback rating is an 89, this is the main difference in the game. Philip Rivers likes to take charge of his team in general, and especially in November. The Texans are always on the brink of making the playoffs while the Chargers always do. I still think both teams are going to make it to the playoffs and believe that this game is going to be the game of the week but I think Rivers is going to find a way to get it done. The Chargers are supposedly one of the best defenses in the NFL but I disagree with this stat because they are giving up 21.7 points a game. The Texans will move the ball and I expect Arian Foster, Kevin Walter, Joel Dressen, and Jacoby Jones to contribute when Schaub isn’t force feeding the ball to Andre Johnson. Every player for both teams is good starts this weekend.. Rivers and Schaub are the best players to plug-in for your fantasy team this weekend as they are both going to have to get creative. I expect Ryan Mathews, Darren Sproles, and Mike Tolbert to all produce. I like the Chargers in this game to win by 2-4 points. I expect over 50 points being scored in this game.

Vikings vs. Cardinals

What a great team to play against in order to look like a playoff contender once again, but this is not the 2009 season. Whether they want to admit it or not, the Vikings are going bonkers after they let go of Randy Moss and owner Zygie Wilf had nothing to do with his release, it was all Childress. Besides for making such a silly decision to let go of Moss, there is a bright side. The Minnesota Vikings led the league last year with 48 sacks while they only have 6 sacks on the year in 2010 and that is definitely due to change. I expect the Vikings defense to pick up the slack on the dysfunctional franchise in Minnesota this week and get a win. Adrian Peterson and Visanthe Shiancoe are the only players worth starting this weekend in my opinion for the Vikings, along with their defense. If Harvin plays then of course, but he is very questionable for Sunday. I like Beanie Wells as a low number two running back this weekend with not a lot of upside. Derek Anderson will have to give the Cardinals an edge in this game and although it is possible I don’t see it from happening. I expect Larry Fitzgerald to get a touchdown at some point in the game.

Evening Player News 11/4

Antonio Gates (Plantar Fascia)

Norv Turner said Thursday that he’s unsure if Gates would play Sunday. Gates should go, Turner doesn’t wanna reveal his deck . Gates is a warrior. Stay tuned just in case.

Colt Mcoy

Coach Eric Mangini said Durant will start Sunday. Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme are still banged up. Only makes sense for the Browns, to see what they got in the rookie. You already know what you have in Wallace and Delhomme and it’s not much.

Mike Williams (Seattle)

Has a bruised thigh and is questionable for Sunday. Stay Tuned

Matt Hasselback (Concussion)

Has been ruled out for Sunday. Charlie Whitehurst will get the start. The Seahawks are playing at home where they are tough, but with Mike Williams questionable, Hasselback and Tackle Russell Okung out this week they could be in serious trouble against the Giants and their Defense.

Pierre Thomas (Ankle)

Pierre Thomas revealed Thursday that doctors “found something else” in his ankle when he was re-examined last week. Honestly, I feel it all over my ankle,” said Thomas. “When you touch it, I feel pain all over my ankle … So, I really messed it up. They say I really messed it up pretty bad.” Chris Ivory will get yet another start, as Reggie Bush is out again this week as well.

Beanie Wells

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic expects Beanie Wells (knee) to be a game-time decision this week. He has been practicing just on a limited basis, Stay tuned.

Austin Collie

Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star would be “shocked” if Austin Collie (thumb surgery) doesn’t play Sunday against the Eagles. Will see, but the Colts offense would get even more dangerous.

Owen Daniels

Coach Gary Kubiak confirmed that Owen Daniels’ hamstring injury has limited his involvement in the Texans offense. This would explan Daniels 1 catch performance against the Colts Monday night. Keep him on your bench until he proves he can produce.

Malcolm Floyd and Legedu Naanee, Craig Davis

All will be out for Sunday. Obviously Floyd is dissapointing after he was really starting to emerge. Patrick Crayton will be the #1 wideout again.

Mike Hart and Joseph Addai

Both were held out of practice on Thursday. Looks like both might miss the game this week, leaving Duties to Donald Brown

Tashard Choice

Was informed by Wade Phillips that his role would increase this week. Felix Jones has an ankle issue, but is expected to play. Marion Barber’s role could decrease.

Desean Jackson (Concussion)

Looks fine for Sunday. He has cleared tests and should be a go, he practiced fully Thursday.

Anthony Gonzalez (Knee)

Beat reporters in Indy are saying Gonzalez injury will keep him out this week and possibly the season. Feel bad for this kid, he just can’t stay healthy. Very talented player

DeAngelo Williams

The Gaston Gazette’s Steve Reed reports that DeAngelo Williams (foot) will be held out again this week versus the Saints. Jonathan Stewart will draw the start against the Saints. But with the way the Panthers are blocking, Stewart isn’t a great start.

Percy Harvin (Ankle)

With Moss out, Percy better be able to play. I think he will make it out there, he is most likely just being rested.

Fred Taylor (Toe)

Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis will remain the goaline back and is a decent flex play at Cleveland this week.

Week 8 Start Em Sit Em

By Mike Cannici

Starts

QB

Matthew Stafford (vs WAS)- Stafford returns this week after missing the last seven weeks with a shoulder injury to face one of the worst pass defenses in the league. He is a great bye week filler and should be owned in all 12 team leagues. There obviously is the question of how his shoulder will hold up but I’d bet that the Lions would not be getting their franchise QB back on the field if he wasn’t 100%.

Matt Cassel (vs BUF)- Don’t look now but Cassel is a good start once again in a home matchup against the Bills. Buffalo’s offense has been much better of late, so look for this to be a close game but their defense is still terrible and they put zero pressure on the QB. Cassel is another example of a great matchup play or a bye week replacement.

Chad Henne (@CIN)- Henne has been very efficient since coming out of the Dolphins bye week. The big numbers haven’t been their but to his credit the turnovers haven’t been their either. CB Jonathan Joseph may be out again for the Bengals and Henne could put up similar numbers to Matt Ryan’s last week (299 yards,3 touchdowns).
RB

Ryan Torain (@DET)- Torain has played very well since taking over for Clinton Portis, with the exception of the two fumbles last week. He draws the Lions this week who are 26th vs. the run, so look for another big day out of Torain. He is a solid flex play with low end RB2 upside.

Beanie Wells (vs. TB)- Wells has been a disappointment thus far but did pick up 54 yards and a score last week. He gets the 31st ranked rush defense Sunday at home and should have his biggest day of the year, especially with Max Hall struggling with in the passing game. Wells is a great flex start and could possibly put up top 5 numbers this week as long as the Cardinals can keep it close, and if they get a solid lead, watch out, it’ll be the Beanie Wells show.

Felix Jones (vs. JAC)- Jones struggled last week against the Giants, but really who hasn’t since week three, but with the loss of Tony Romo, may actually become more valuable going forward. Jon Kitna replaces Romo, and while I don’t think Kitna will be horrible, I do think Dallas will rely on the run a little more going forward, to limit the turnovers and mistakes. This week Jones gets the Jaguars who are 25th against the run and 27th vs. the pass. Jones is a very good flex play this week and even a low end RB2 in PPR leagues.

WR

Pierre Garcon (vs. HOU)- With Austin Collie, Dallas Clark and Joseph Addai out, there is going to be a lot more balls to go around and Garcon will be the #2 option behind Reggie Wayne. Garcon should at least duplicate his numbers from week six against the Redskins (4-104-1) if not surpass them. Houston ranks dead last against the pass and at home, Peyton Manning will be airing it out. Solid WR3/Flex in this matchup.

Dwayne Bowe (vs. BUF)- This should almost go without saying, but I know there are a lot of owners out their wondering, should I start Bowe again this week? The answer is simple, HELL freaking yes. He has scored two touchdowns in each of the last two weeks, and playing this week at home against the Bills, it wouldn’t shock me that he does it again. Dexter McCluster will miss the next few weeks with a high ankle sprain, so Bowe’s targets should increase even more. He’s a high end WR3 with WR2 potential. Get him in lineups.

Patrick Crayton (vs. TEN)- Crayton is averaging around 100 yards in each of his last two games, and has another solid matchup this week. He makes for a great flex play and a WR3 in PPR leagues. In this pass happy offense; look for Crayton to put up 6-8 catches, around 80-90 yards and a score this week. Start him with confidence.

Sits

QB

Vince Young (@SD)- Young is likely to start Sunday in San Diego after missing last week’s game with knee and ankle injuries. He isn’t a good start however as he is 0-4 in his career against the Chargers. The Chargers are also ranked 4th against the run and 1st against the pass, making Young a desperation start at best.

Donavan McNabb (@DET)- I know I know most people’s eyes light up if they have a player facing the Lions, but the Lions have defended the pass pretty well and McNabb is coming off a terrible game against the Bears last week. The Lions have allowed 10 passing TD’s in 6 games and have six interceptions to go along with that and 16 sacks. McNabb is a decent start in 2QB leagues, but if you start just one, I hope you have other options.

RB

Ryan Mathews (vs. TEN)- Mathews has two things working against him this week, one is the Titans are 10th vs. the run and second the Chargers don’t like to run the ball very often. Mathews is still recovering from his ankle injury and is near 100% but their still babying him a little bit. I was watching some tape of him last night on NFL Networks playbook and saw how he still is trying to bounce it to the outside instead of following his blockers and hitting the holes. The Chargers o-line hasn’t been great, but during those highlights, their was at least three HUGE holes he could have hit for big gains. He’s just a rookie, but a rookie who should be on your bench this week if you have better options.

Saints RB’s Chris Ivory/Ladell Betts (vs. PIT)- Ivory and Betts weren’t spectacular last week against the Browns at home and this week draw the league’s best run defense in the Steelers. Ivory had that big week six game and Betts has been decent in PPR leagues, but both are better left on fantasy benches in week eight. The Steelers have only allowed two rushing touchdowns this year, and both were from less than 3 yards out and are allowing opponents 2.8 yards per carry. The Steelers have also faced backs the likes of Chris Johnson, Michael Turner, Ronnie Brown, Ray Rice and the list goes on. Ivory and Betts are nowhere near those players so keep them on benches this week.
WR

Lee Evans (@KC)- I know Evans has been solid lately and I love the guy as much as anyone, but he draws a matchup with Brandon Flowers this week, one of the up and coming star cornerbacks, and should be held in check. I expect Stevie Johnson to have another solid day, but keep Evans on benches this week if it’s feasible. With that Kansas City crowd noise, I’d expect Ryan Fitzpatrick to have a lot of trouble moving the ball.

Mike Williams (@OAK)- Williams has been great the last two weeks, but is about to hit a wall, and that wall’s name is Nnamdi Asomugha. The Seahawks are also not nearly as good on the road as they are at home and similar to Ryan Fitzpatrick, I think Hasselback will have problems with the crowd noise and finding Mike Williams open on a regular basis. Williams will be great the rest of the way, I just don’t see this week being one of those great weeks.

Michael Crabtree (vs. Den in London)- Crabtree’s value took a big hit last week with the loss of QB Alex Smith to a separated shoulder. Crabtree was just starting to get it going and will now be relegated to a flex play at best with Troy Smith or David Carr at the helm. Troy Smith is definitely the better of the two options, but I don’t see Crabtree having the big games we saw from him during weeks four through six. It pains me to say this as I am a Crabtree owner in a keeper league and two redraft leagues but keep him on the bench this week, at least until we see what we have with Troy Smith.

Start Em Sit Em WEEK 4 Edition

By Mike Cannici

Start Em

QB’s

Matt Ryan vs SF- Ryan is coming off a huge road win against the defending champs and division rival Saints. A knock on Matty “Ice” throughout his short career was that he didn’t play well on the road in big games but last week he answered that question with a 19-30 228yard and 2TD performance without a turnover. This week he draws the 49ers at home, which just got smacked around by Kansas City last week. San Fran has the 16th ranked pass defense and Matt Cassel threw for 250 yards and 3 scores against them. Start Matt Ryan this week, I promise it’ll be worth it.

Kyle Orton @TEN- Orton has now thrown for 295, 307 and 476 yards respectively through first 3 weeks of the season. He’s spreading the ball around and making all of his receiver’s fantasy relevant. The Titans coming into last Sunday’s contest against the Giants had ranked first against the pass, but allowed 386 yards through the air to Eli and the Giants.

Mark Sanchez @ BUF- Jets QB has produced two straight quality outings against division rivals and it should continue this week against the 18th ranked pass defense of the Bills.

RB’s

Peyton Hillis vs CIN- Hillis exploded for 144 yards and a TD last week against the normally stout Baltimore run defense. Hillis appears to be the “guy” now in that Browns backfield and as a great matchup at home against the Bengals. The Bengals are allowing 104ypg on the ground and their run defense is not nearly as good as the Ravens and Hillis was able to expose them. Hillis makes for a great flex play in week 4.

Ronnie Brown vs NE- Brown didn’t have his best game during week 3(11rush-54yds) but that was against the Jets front seven and he should have a lot more success at home against the Patriots. The Pats are a currently ranked 20th against the run (119ypg) and this makes for an ideal matchup for Brown and even Ricky Williams for that matter. Brown is definitely the safer play however.

Beanie Wells @ SD- Wells made his 2010 debut last week against the Raiders and rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries. He is a great start this week and appears to be back to full strength. Get him in your lineup as he could go off this week. San Diego has held up pretty well against the run since opening night in KC, but Maurice Jones-Drew was held in check for the most part because they were getting blown out and Justin Forsett and the Seahawks just aren’t the ground and pound team that the Cardinals are. Wells is safe to get back into all lineups.

WR’s

Louis Murphy vs HOU- This game can go one of two ways and regardless, Murphy will get his yards as Houston is horrific against the pass allowing a league worst 368.7 ypg. That number would be even higher had they not been blown out basically at Dallas last week. Bruce Gradkowski is also a decent matchup play this week at QB. Murphy put up 5 catches for 119 yards against the Cardinals and should at least match that this week with a score. Get him in your lineups even though he’s yet to practice this week with a bruised clavicle, all signs are pointing towards him starting.

Lance Moore vs CAR- Moore broke out this past weekend with a six catch 149 yard and 2TD performance. Moore’s most productive season to date came back in 2008 when Reggie Bush went down for a significant amount of time. Moore had a terrible 2009 but you can blame mostly injuries on that, as he appears to now be fully healthy. Grab him and start him in all leagues this week at home against the Panthers.

Malcom Floyd/Legedu Naanee vs ARI- Both these guys saw pretty consistent targets last weekend against the Seahawks and should both be viable #3WR or flex plays this week. I had stated a few weeks back you may want to stay away from these guys until one guy emerges, but after last week it would appear Rivers will spread the ball around pretty evenly between the two and even sprinkle in Buster Davis as well. The Cards pass defense is dreadful and I can see both these guys getting in the end zone. Start them both with confidence.

Sit Em

QB’s

Joe Flacco @ PIT- Flacco finally stepped up and played very well last week, but it was against Cleveland and the Steelers have pretty much shut down everyone thus far. I don’t like Flacco’s matchup this week so hopefully you have other options to explore.

Alex Smith @ ATL- At this point Smith cannot be counted on as any more than a bye week filler. After his week 2 performance against the Saints it looked like he was beginning to turn the corner. Smith should be a decent matchup play at home, but until further notice do not start him on the road as he has been terrible in two road starts.

RB’s

MarShawn Lynch vs NYJ- Not much to say here, Lynch has been the featured back the past two weeks for the Bills and will be once again, unfortunately he has a terrible matchup against the 4th ranked Jets pass defense. Keep him on your bench until next week against the Jaguars or until he gets traded to maybe the Packers? That would be a great fit.

Darren McFadden vs HOU- RUN DMC has been great thus far as the featured back, but sadly he draws the leagues 4th ranked run defense this week. I don’t think it’ll be a total dud performance, but don’t think he’s worth starting this week except in PPR formats. If he can stay healthy he should be in for a big year but not on the ground in week 4.

Laurence Maroney @ TEN- Maroney was a hot pick up last week after it was announced Knowshon Moreno would miss a few weeks. Maroney did not look very good though last week at home against a below average Colt defense. Playing at the Titans definitely doesn’t help either and I’d avoid Maroney this week like the plague.

WR’s

Mike Wallace vs BAL- Wallace had 3 big catches last week resulting in 100yds and 2 TD. However, as suspect as people may think the Ravens secondary is, they are allowing the fewest passing yards per game and have allowed a long pass of 29yards this season. Wallace is a deep threat and if you can take that away from his, he has little to no value. Keep him on benches this week until Big Ben returns in week 6.

Derrick Mason @ PIT- Mason over the years has been a quality #2 or 3 WR but thus far Flacco and Mason have failed to get on the same page. he has just seven catches on the year and I don’t think he’s ready to get it rolling this coming Sunday in Pittsburgh. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, I believe is going to start eating into Mason’s targets. Don’t drop Mason just yet has he has been one of the most consistent receivers in the game the past 7-8 years, but leave him on your bench until he finds some continuity with his QB.

Nate Washington vs DEN- Washington had only 3 catches for 30 yds last week during their victory of the Giants, and have a tough matchup against Champ Bailey this week. Vince Young isn’t exactly lighting it up through the air and this team’s pace and tempo is determined by Chris Johnson. Kenny Britt is a possibility to break one deep or get a red zone target but Washington should be left on the bench in all leagues this week.

Those are my start em sit em’s for Week 4. Any questions concerning your particular team feel free to send me an email to mtcannici@gmail.com and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Player Updates Friday, 9/24

Today is a big day for injured players to practice, and if they don’t or are limited Friday’s, usually they are not expected to play the upcoming Sunday. Here is a list of some players and their injury status.

The Denver Broncos have just announced that RB Knowshon Moreno will be out this week due to an undisclosed injury. This is an odd turn of events, but Correll Buckhalter and Laurence Maroney should split carries against the Colts. Buckhalter is probably a better option to have more yards, but Maroney should see the goal line carries and is a average play in TD heavy leagues. Get Moreno out of lineups and find another option. UPDATE: It appears Moreno reaggravated his hamstring in practice and that is the reason he will be inactive Sunday. SOURCE: Jay Glazer on Twitter

Cadillac Williams, Tampa RB was at practice today, and looks to be in good shape for Sunday’s home game against Pittsburgh. He’s not a very good option however against the stout Steeler defense. Explore other options if their available. SOURCE: Rick Stroud on Twitter

Cardinals RB Beanie Wells worked out in pads today for the first time in weeks and appears to be a go for Sunday. SOURCE: Kent Somers on Twitter

Giants C Shaun O’Hara didn’t practice once again Friday(ankle/achilles) and is listed as doubtful for Sunday against the Titans. Adam Koets will make the start for the G-Men.Source: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Giants DE Justin Tuck is listed as questionable as well for Sunday after waking up with a sore shoulder. Head Coach Tom Coughlin said he hopes it isn’t an issue but its sounding more and more like he will be limited at best this weekend. SOURCE: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Jets C Nick Mangold returned to practice Friday after missing two days due to injury. He is expected to play Sunday in Miami. He is very important for the that run game to succeed against the Dolphin run defense.

Raiders RB Michael Bush is expected to make his debut Sunday against the Cardinals, but according to sources, Darren McFadden will remain the lead back for now at least. Bush is a average flex play this week, you should take a wait and see approach with Bush before inserting him into your lineup. SOURCE: Oakland Tribune

The report about Cleveland RB Jerome Harrison is a bleak one, he will not practice today and is doubtful to play Sunday against the Ravens. He’s not a guy you should be starting anyway against Baltimore, especially since he is in a committee with Peyton Hillis and 2nd year back James Davis is also expected to steal some carries. SOURCE: Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter

Colts RB Joseph Addai returned to practice, although in limited fashion Thursday. It remains to be seen if he’ll practice today with the knee injury he suffered Sunday, the same knee he had surgically repaired in the offseason. If Addai sits, Donald Brown will get the bulk of the carries and is a very good low end RB2 and flex play against Denver.  UPDATE: According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen Addai is good to go Sunday and will start against denver. SOURCE: Lindsay Jones on Twitter

In other Colts news, WR Pierre Garcon, who has struggled so far in 2010, has been downgraded to doubtful after sitting out practice Thursday with a hamstring injury. With his recent struggles, you should be looking elsewhere for a WR3 or flex, but with this news he obviously should be taken out of lineups.

Falcon RB Michael Turner was upgraded to a full participant during yesterday’s practice and is going to start Sunday in New Orleans. Get him into your lineup, he could have a good day, as Frank Gore posted big numbers against this defense Monday night. SOURCE: D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter

The San Diego Union-Tribune has confirmed that San Diego RB Ryan Mathews is certain to sit out Sunday’s road game at Seattle. The Chargers would be foolish to play him and risk him missing extended time. Mike Tolbert will shoulder the load with Darren Sproles playing third downs as a pass catcher. SOURCE: San Diego Union-Tribune

Redskin backup RB Keiland Williams, has impressed Coach Shanahan with his ability to pick up the offense quickly and block in pass protection, which is a rarity for a rookie. Williams, is a injury away to Clinton Portis before he has significant value, but as you should know, Portis isn’t the poster boy for staying healthy. Williams needs to be owned in all leagues right now, and even more so by Portis owners. SOURCE: CSN Washington UPDATE: Clinton Portis  was spotted icing his right wrist/forearm during the second half of week 2 and now is listed as questionable for Sunday. Keiland Williams would start in his place and could put up big numbers against the Rams. SOURCE: Ryan O’Halloran on Twitter

Ram WR Laurent Robinson is in a walking boot and is listed as doubtful for week 3. Rookie Mardy Gilyard, who the Rams have already said will see the field more often this week, now gets an upgrade and could break through for a long TD with his speed and quickness. Robinson should obviously be on benches this week. Gilyard is a risky play, but someone to look out for going forward.
